Outreach toolkit

Overview

CELA member libraries do significant outreach in their communities, including to people with print disabilities. This toolkit is designed to help support and encourage these efforts with practical tools developed in collaboration with other member libraries.

In-reach to staff

Outreach is most effective when your library staff are well-informed and enthusiastic about accessible collections and services. Consider using the following resources and suggestions to engage and train staff:

  • Slides about CELA for use at staff meetings and trainings (Powerpoint)
  • Make accessibility a standing item on staff meeting agendas so there is a regular opportunity to share information about service changes or concerns
  • Invite people from organizations in your community representing persons with disabilities to present about their members and services
  • Take training from CELA: join a live webinar or watch a recorded version
  • Include your board members in your training

Website and social media content

Your website and social media can support your outreach efforts. Put information about your accessible collections and services on your website and social media, and check and update it periodically to make sure it's accurate. And follow CELA on Twitter and Facebook while you're at it! The following sample web content and social media posts are intended as starting points for sharing information about your accessible services online.

  • Sample web content about CELA for your website (Word)
  • Sample social media content (Word)
  • List of events related to accessible reading (Word)
  • Downloadable CELA logo (JPG and PNG)

In your community

We have compiled a list of some organizations public libraries may wish to work with when reaching out to people with print disabilities. We hope it's a useful starting point, but it's definitely not exhaustive! You know your community, and can determine which organizations are active in your area.
