Finding and creating records
MARC records in OCLC
MARC records for original productions are uploaded to OCLC regularly. These are titles created under the exception in the copyright act, not titles received from exchanges or agreements with partners.
Records for other CELA collection titles from commercial sources and exchange partners are also sometimes available through OCLC. Use advanced search with publisher as either “CNIB” or “CELA”.
When the CELA MARC record cannot be found in OCLC, records for the original format, such as print, can be found through OCLC or Z39.50 sources.
CELA DAISY metadata table for libraries
When cataloguing from the original format, changes need to be made to indicate the DAISY format, as well as add metadata specific to the DAISY format, such as narrator, file size, and running time. For titles added in June 2021 or later, we are providing access to this format-specific metadata in the CELA DAISY metadata for libraries table. This table excludes some titles supplied by exchange partners, such as the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) and la Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ). Records produced by these exchange partners can sometimes be found on OCLC or from the supplier.
Format-specific metadata is not available for DAISY with synthetic audio.
Modifying records for the DAISY format
Note that these instructions are sufficient to describe the DAISY format. You may need to make additional changes to MARC records or task lists based on your library's cataloguing standards.
Records that already describe the DAISY format, such as CELA’s DAISY audiobook records in OCLC, do not require further changes. Applying the MARCEdit task list to these records will duplicate fields unnecessarily. Look to fields 300, 347, 532 to verify that they are DAISY records.
MARCEdit task lists for cataloguing DAISY CDs
We provide two MARCEdit task lists for French and English DAISY audiobooks on CD:
Language of audiobooks can be identified by 008/35 - 37, which should be “eng” or “fre”.
The task lists make the following changes (summarized):
- Replace fixed fields LDR, 007, 008, delete 006
- Move 260/264 (distribution/publication information) to 534, add new 264 for CELA reproduction
- Move 020 (original ISBN) to 534, add new 020 for CELA ISBN
- Replace fields 300, 336, 337, 338, 344, 347 with RDA carrier information
- Add DAISY-specific notes to 506, 530, 532, 533
- Add fields 037 (supplier) and 511 (narrator) if empty
- Delete fields 001, 003, 005, 263, 538, 588, 710, 776, 856, 938, 948, 994
Note that the year in 008 and 264 needs to be updated to the current year.
Some fields will be left blank after applying the task list. These additional changes:
- Fill 020, 037 (if empty), 300, 306, 347, 511 (if empty) with CELA ISBN, supplier, runtime, filesize, narrator
- Replace intended age and literary format in generic 008
- Verify that 037 (supplier), 511 (narrator) and 534 (original information) are correct. If the correct source record was not used, they will need to be corrected to match CELA’s DAISY recording.
This information can be sourced from the CELA DAISY metadata for libraries table. There may be text encoding errors present in this table. The information here is provided as-is and it is the member library’s responsibility to ensure it is formatted correctly for their own cataloguing standards. Online tools exist to clean HTML encoding and tags.
If you are distributing DAISY audiobooks using a delivery format besides CD, note that carrier information needs to be updated in the 007 and 3XX fields.
