E foi ali, em Mossul, em noites de calor escaldante, moscas, cavalos e cães selvagens, que escrevi este livro. Quando cheguei a Lisboa editei, acrescentei, organizei o texto, mas o lugar da escrita, o ponto de vista, a minha casa,… foi ali, rente ao palco do massacre, na fornalha de Julho e da guerra. O Estado Islâmico é, provavelmente, de todas as realidades do século XXI, a mais difícil de compreender. Talvez um dos maiores desafios de sempre. Nas regiões que controla é impossível entrar. Um jornalista só chega quando os jihadistas já partiram, ou foram aniquilados. Chegando antes será ele aniquilado fisicamente ou, se não fisicamente, decerto como jornalista. O Estado Islâmico é uma imagem que se desvanece quando lhe tentamos tocar. Eu quis aproximar-me o mais possível.
