Summary

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry scrisse questo testo inizialmente per la prefazione di Trentatre giorni, il romanzo-testimonianza scritto dal suo grande amico Léon Werth, in cui è narrata la fuga dalla Parigi del 1940 invasa dai nazisti. Werth, allora, fu costretto a… fuggire nello Jura, in quanto ebreo, e affidò proprio a Saint-Exupéry il suo manoscritto. Nonostante le sollecitazioni di Saint-Exupéry, il manoscritto rimase inedito per ragioni non chiarite. Lettera all’amico, titolo originale di Lettera a un ostaggio, viene interamente rimaneggiata da Antoine de Saint-Exupéry che si preoccupa di togliere ogni riferimento esplicito all’amico al fine di tutelarlo. È nel 1943 che sarà pubblicata la presente versione con l’attuale titolo. Léon Werth non è più citato direttamente nell’opera ma lo ritroviamo ovunque, per primo, nella figura simbolica del Francese preso in ostaggio dall’occupante. L’opera è composta di sei brevi capitoli che esplorano l’umanità nei diversi aspetti, con lo sguardo particolare che tanto caratterizza l’autore.
