Summary
Anya's diary describes her difficult life in Horoshova, in Austria-Hungary, and how her family immigrates to Canada. When the First World War breaks out, she becomes the sole provider after her father is laid off for "patriotic reasons", and the… social climate leaves the streets a dangerous place. Eventually, the family and nearly all of their neighbours are sent away to the Spirit Lake internment camp, where they are treated as criminals. Grades 5-8. 2007.
