In 1862, during the Civil War, eleven-year-old Summer and her thirteen-year-old brother, Rosco, take turns describing their lives as slaves on a Virginia plantation. Summer dreams of learning to read, but Rosco’s yearning for freedom is more intense. Grades 5-8. 2000.
