Summary
First published in German in 1983. This monologue is narrated by a young man who is an imaginary friend of the eccentric pianist Glenn Gould. The narrator and Wertheimer, another friend who is devastated by Gould's talent, relinquish thoughts of… a career in music after listening to Gould's drive for perfection in Bach's Goldberg Variations. The Bach work forms a recurring theme in an extended meditation on art, love, friendship, and death
