A biography, written by an Australian, Lennard Bickel, this book sets the life and achievements of Louis Braille in the setting of the political and social life of France at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Commencing with the foundation… of the Royal Institute for the Young Blind in Paris (1786), it describes the constant battle to improve conditions for the blind, Braille's encouragement by Dr. Pignier (Director of the Institute) against opposition for the use of a "special alphabet" for the blind, and the gradual acceptance of the 'six-dot-system" which came only after Braille's tragic death at the age of forty-three.
