Summary
In 1824, on the island of Trinidad, Marie Ursule arranges a mass suicide among the slaves as an act of revolt. However, she cannot bring herself to kill her own daughter, Bola. She is smuggled away and from here begins… a story of six generations of Marie Ursule's family as they spread to America, Canada and Europe. Their lives continue to be haunted, and vindicated, by Marie Ursule's dreams and her passion as the story moves through two World Wars and into the violence and confusion of the twentieth century. Some strong language.
