Summary
In pre-Confederation Newfoundland, deeply spiritual Job Gale decides to enlist during World War II, leaving behind his wife, Sare, and two daughters, Clair and Missy. Job returns broken, disillusioned, and bearing a dark secret, and soon dies, as does Sare.… Clair leaves her childhood home to teach and start her own family, growing apart from Missy and their uncle Sim.
