R.D. Lawrence is one of Canada's most prolific nature writers, but he had an adventurous life before he came to Canada. Born in Spain, he enlisted as a Republican soldier in the Spanish Civil War at the age of 15.… In 1939, he joined the British Army and fought as a tank gunner at Dunkirk, North Africa, and Normandy.
