La relazione di Kelly Raney con il fidanzato manesco finisce il giorno in cui lo lascia sanguinante sul pavimento della camera da letto dopo una violenta lite. Afferra il figlioletto Keegan e insieme lasciano la città con una manciata di… dollari e qualche bene di prima necessità. L'automobile che guida si rompe proprio al di fuori del piccolo villaggio di Black Water Creek. Kelly con riluttanza accetta di restare con il meccanico Ed Sheridan e sua moglie il tempo necessario per rimettersi in sesto. Trova un lavoro e si trasferisce in una villetta isolata nei pressi del fiume, desiderando di ricominciare da zero per garantire una vita stabile a suo figlio. Ma proprio quando sembra che le cose vadano per il verso giusto, visioni di torture ed omicidi avvenuti nella villetta dove ora vive la tormentano di notte e la perseguitano di giorno. Quel che è peggio è il sospetto che il suo fidanzato l'abbia scovata e, in cerca di vendetta, minacci di distruggere la vita che si è creata.
