By Terence Lovat, Robert Crotty. 2015
At the present time, when so-called Islamic radicalism, terrorism and Jihadism occupy major media space, with Islam often depicted as…
the main culprit, the book attempts a tour de force. It proposes that Islam is as much victim as culprit in the history that has led to the current hostility. This is because the common claims of both mainstream and radical Islam that Islam represents the high point of the Abrahamic tradition, and therefore a purification of Judaism and Christianity, have been largely ignored, misunderstood or blatantly rejected by these faiths and therefore by 'the West' in general. This rejection has effectively rendered Islam as the poor cousin, if not the illegitimate sibling, of the tradition. In turn, this has created long-term resentment and hostility within Islam as well as robbed the 'Judaeo-Christian West' of a rich, inter-faith understanding of the wider Abrahamic tradition. The book explores these claims through textual, historical and theological analyses, proposing that many of them stand up better to critical scrutiny than has been commonly acknowledged. It further proposes that seeing Islam in this way has potential to re-awaken its self-understanding as a leader of accord among the Abrahamic faiths, of the kind that characterized the era of Convivencia when, in medieval Spain, Islam constructed and contributed to advanced civilizations characterized by relatively harmonious co-existence between Muslims, Christians and Jews. The book focuses on the role that a more respected and self-confident Islam could play in forging enhanced inter-faith relations in a world that desperately needs them as it struggles to understand and deal with modern and particularly vicious forms of radical Islamism.Medical Sociology on the Move

Comprising a single repository of knowledge andscientific evidence in the field, this book provides strategies to mitigatefall risk by providing…
information on the complex interactions between agingprocesses, co-morbid conditions and prescribed medications in older patients. Geriatric health is becoming a more prominentissue as the population ages, and balancing the beneficial effects of medicationagainst the potential and real side-effects in these patients involves adeliberate and thoughtful task: physiologic aging, the accumulation ofco-morbidities, and the use of drugs to manage various conditions and symptomsgenerates a unique set of problems for each patient. Falls are a dreaded event in older people. Theevent can affect a person in a physical, and psychological manner, resulting insoft tissue and bony injury, fear of falling, and depression. Theidentification of and reduction in fall risks in older people is a worldwideconcern, and reducing the incidence of falls is a ubiquitous quality measure ofhealth care delivery. Heterogeneity amongst older people precludes a singlesolution. However, physicians and others involved in the care of geriatricpatients will benefit from the presented insights into how medication use canbe modified to limit its impact as a contributing factor.Veterinary Science

It brings together a group of authors with varied expertise writing on an array of inter-related educational topics that will help educators use neuroscience to understand and address the cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioral needs of all young children, including those with exceptionalities. They believe neuroscience can be insightful and useful to educators if applied ethically and with care. The book offers strategies educators and caregivers can use to affect children today and the adults they can become.A Parametric Framework for Modelling of Bioelectrical Signals (Series in BioEngineering)
By Yar M. Mughal. 2016
This book examines non-invasive electrical-based methods for disease diagnosis and assessment of heart function In particular …
a formalized signal model is proposed since this offers several advantages over methods that rely on measured data alone By using a formalized representation the parameters of the signal model can be easily manipulated and or modified thus providing mechanisms that allow researchers to reproduce and control such signals In addition having such a formalized signal model makes it possible to develop computer tools that can be used for manipulating and understanding how signal changes result from various heart conditions as well as for generating input signals for experimenting with and evaluating the performance of e g signal extraction methods The work focuses on bioelectrical information particularly electrical bio-impedance EBI Once the EBI has been measured the corresponding signals have to be modelled for analysis This requires a structured approach in order to move from real measured data to the model of the corresponding signals This book proposes a generic framework for this procedure It can be used as a guide for modelling impedance cardiography ICG and impedance respirography IRG signals as well as for developing the corresponding bio-impedance signal simulator BISSNew Perspectives on Paternalism and Health Care
By Thomas Schramme. 2015
This work sets the stage regarding debates about paternalism and health care for years to come. The anthology is organized…
around four parts: i) The concept of paternalism and theoretical issues regarding the idea of anti-paternalism, ii) strategies for justifying different forms of paternalism, iii) paternalism in psychiatry and psychotherapy, iv) paternalism and public health, and v) paternalism and reproductive medicine. Medical paternalism was arguably one of the main drivers of debates in medical ethics and has led to a wide acknowledgement of the value of patient autonomy. However, more recent developments in health care, such as the increasing significance of public health measures and the commercialization of medical services, have led to new social circumstances and hence to the need to rethink issues regarding paternalism. This work provides an invaluable source for many scholars and practitioners, since it deals in new and original ways with one of the main and oldest issue in health care ethics. Prioritization in Medicine
By Eckhard Nagel, Michael Lauerer. 2016
The gap between a rising demand for health care services on the one side and scarce resources on the other, is…
leading to a growing pressure on decision-making processes. Hence, prioritization in medicine has become an increasingly important issue for assuring stability of health systems and improving the capability of health care. The present volume addresses normative dimensions of methodological and theoretical approaches, the legal basis behind priority setting as well as international experiences concerning the normative framework and the process of priority setting. It also examines specific criteria for prioritization and discusses economic evaluations. Contributing authors from a broad range of scientific disciplines discuss prioritization within an international dialogue. The Yale Swallow Protocol
By Steven B. Leder, Debra M. Suiter. 2014
The Yale Swallow Protocol is an evidence-based protocol that is the only screening instrument that both identifies aspiration risk and,…
when passed, is able to recommend specific oral diets without the need for further instrumental dysphagia testing. Based upon research by Drs. Steven B. Leder and Debra M. Suiter, an easily administered, reliable and validated swallow screening protocol was developed and can be used by speech-language pathologists, nurses, otolaryngologists, oncologists, neurologists, intensivists and physicians assistants. In addition, the protocol can be used in a variety of environments, including acute care, rehabilitation and nursing homes. The Yale Swallow Protocol meets all of the criteria necessary for a successful screening test, including being simple to administer, cross-disciplinary, cost effective, acceptable to patients and able to identify the target attribute by giving a positive finding when aspiration risk is present and a negative finding when aspiration risk is absent. Additionally, early and accurate identification of aspiration risk can significantly reduce health-care costs associated with recognized prandial aspiration.Strategic Scientific and Medical Writing

By Anne-Maria Pajari, Marja Mutanen. 2010
Vegetables, Whole Grains and their Derivatives in Cancer Prevention looks in detail at the evidence regarding the effects and mechanisms…
of action of potentially cancer-preventive components and their sources from plant kingdom. The book covers current knowledge on certain foods and their constituents in cancer prevention, such as cruciferous and green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds, whole grains, tomato lycopene and carotenoids, alliums and their sulphur and selenium constituents, and capsaicinoids from chilli peppers. It focuses not only on single compounds but aims to widen the view by discussing a whole-diet approach in cancer prevention. A single component may lose its chemopreventive efficacy when isolated from the food matrix and in many cases isolated and concentrated components as supplements may actually induce tumor development. Apart from describing the effects and mechanisms of action, the chapters also contain information on intake, bioavailability, metabolism and possible toxic effects of foods and components presented. Evaluation and comparison of the data from mechanistic studies in vitro with those from animal experiments in vivo form a basis for applying the current knowledge to human nutrition in the field of carcinogenesis. With contributions from leading experts in the field, this book is an invaluable resource for scientists and professionals working in cancer research, as well as individuals involved in food and nutrition.
