the unparalleled humanitarian efforts of Dorothea Dix to the revolutionary architectural concepts of Thomas Story Kirkbride. After well over a century of service, Greystone was left abandoned in 2008. From the time it closed until its demolition in 2015, Greystone became the focal point of a passionate preservation effort that drew national attention and served to spark the public's interest in historical asylum preservation. Many of the images contained in this book were rescued from the basement of Greystone in 2002 and have never been seen by the public. They appear courtesy of the Morris Plains Museum and its staff, who spent many hours digitally archiving the photographs so that future generations may better know Greystone's history.Calcium and vitamin D are essential nutrients for the human body Establishing the levels of these nutrients that are…

You'll learn a brief history of Chinese medicine and "yin fire," one of the most important concepts in internal diseases. Finally, Marc offers an action plan for readers to continue on their journey toward total wellness. The Hourglass Solution: A Boomer's Guide to the Rest of Your Life
By Jeff Johnson, Paula Forman. 2009
Seventy-five million baby boomers are finding themselves bound by habits and pursuits instigated many years agoand for a large percentage…
of those boomers, significant aspects of their lives no longer satisfy. But by joining revolutionary insight to highly proprietary prescriptive advice, The Hourglass Solution provides a proactive and pragmatic way to lead a better life after 50. Johnson and Forman evaluate the life narrative through the lens of an hourglassproposing that those in early adulthood are at the top of the hourglass, able to select from many options, while those in middle age are in the hourglass’s neck, constrained by the choices they made earlier in their lives. The Hourglass Solution explains how those approaching their fifties (and beyond) can still find a wealth of opportunity by recognizing and pursuing new directions, free from the restrictions imposed by an earlier choice. Like Gail Sheehy’s Passages before it, The Hourglass Solution will enlighten and inspire a generation of readers to regain control over their lives and well-being.This self help manual is for those for whom depression arises from the impact of exceptional circumstances such as childbirth…

By Vissanu Zumitzavan, Jonathan Michie. 2015
This book presents unique management perspectives from Thailand's Healthcare Industry. It focuses on the areas of Personal Knowledge Management, Leadership…
Styles and Organisational Performance. The book highlights the various business challenges that organisations face in the context of globalisation, which itself has produced new opportunities and difficulties alike. In addition, it also elaborates on how even large organisations with strong histories can no longer compete unless they are willing to adapt to changing conditions. Demonstrating how transferring and encouraging knowledge within an organisation can generate approaches that promote its continuing success, the book mainly focuses on the perspective of the Resource Based View, a broadly recognised method for maintaining the competitive advantages of an organisation. It also stresses the importance of making the most use of organisational resources. The book offers a valuable reference work, not only for practitioners and academic researchers in the fields of Business & Management but also for students taking Leadership Management, Organisational Learning and Organisational Performance Appraisal courses, serving as a sourcebook for the principles of successful management.Jesus Among Other Gods
By Ravi Zacharias. 2000
In a world with so many religions, why Jesus? We are living in a time when you can believe anything, as…
long as you do not claim it to be true. In the name of "tolerance," our postmodern culture embraces everything from Eastern mysticism to New Age spirituality. But as Ravi Zacharias points out, such unquestioning acceptance of all things spiritual is absurd. All religions, plainly and simply, cannot be true.Jesus Among Other Gods provides the answers to the most fundamental claims about Christianity, such as:Aren't all religions fundamentally the same? Was Jesus who He claimed to be?Can one study the life of Christ and demonstrate conclusively that He was and is the way, the truth, and the life?In each chapter, Zacharias considers a unique claim that Jesus made and then contrasts the truth of Jesus with the founders of Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism with compelling insight and passionate conviction. In addition to an impressive breadth of reading and study, he shares his personal journey from despair and meaninglessness to his discovery that Jesus is who He said He is."In Jesus Among Other Gods, Ravi Zacharias demonstrates that he is one of the most intellectually gifted as well as spiritually sensitive writers of today's leading apologists for the Christian faith. Zacharias brings alive the unique power of the claims of Jesus about himself and the utter relevance of his message today for the human condition." -- David Aikman, author of Great SoulsLactoferrin and its Role in Wound Healing
By Yoshiharu Takayama. 2011
Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein belonging to the transferrin family. It acts as a defense in host animals against microbes…
and viruses, since it has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial and antiviral activities. Lactoferrin has been shown to regulate the growth and differentiation of many types of cells. The results of recent studies indicate that lactoferrin is a potent regulator of dermal fibroblasts, and promotes cutaneous wound healing. The collagen gel contraction, a model of wound contraction during wound healing process, and migration of human fibroblasts were enhanced by lactoferrin. LRP-1 (LDL Receptor related Protein-1) acts as a signaling receptor for lactoferrin that mediate fibroblast response to lactoferrin by activating ERK/MAPK signaling pathway. In addition, lactoferrin promotes biosynthesis of extracellular matrix (ECM) component such as type-I collagen and hyaluronan. Hyaluronan is a major component of ECM in connective tissue and promotes wound healing. The promoting effect of lactoferrin on hyaluronan production was accompanied by promotion of HAS2 (hyaluronan synthase 2) expression. These observations suggest that lactoferrin promotes the wound healing by providing an ECM that promotes fibroblast migration. Lactoferrin is also known for its anti-inflammatory and immune modulating properties. According to recent in vivo study, lactoferrin promotes wound repair by promoting the early inflammatory phase of wound healing. Based on this, recombinant human lactoferrin was subsequently tested clinically in a Phase II trial in patients with diabetic ulcers and was found to be effective. Lactoferrin should be further evaluated in patients with diabetic and other types of ulcers.Neighbourhood Effects or Neighbourhood Based Problems?: A Policy Context
By Nick Bailey, Duncan Maclennan, Ludi Simpson, David Manley. 2014
This edited volume critically examines the link between area based policies, neighbourhood based problems, and neighbourhood effects: the idea that…
living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods has a negative effect on residents' life chances over and above the effect of their individual characteristics. Over the last few decades, Western governments have persistently pursued area based policies to fight such effects, despite a lack of evidence that they exist, or that these policies make a difference. The first part of this book presents case studies of perceived neighbourhood based problems in the domains of crime; health; educational outcomes; and employment. The second part of the book presents an international overview of the policies that different governments have implemented in response to these neighbourhood based problems, and discusses the theoretical and conceptual processes behind place based policy making. Case studies are drawn from a diverse range of countries including the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Australia, Canada, and the USA.What's that pig outdoors?
By Henry Kisor. 2010
Henry Kisor lost his hearing at age three to meningitis and encephalitis but went on to excel in the most…
verbal of professions as a literary journalist. This new and expanded edition of Kisor's engrossing memoir recounts his life as a deaf person in a hearing world and addresses heartening changes over the last two decades due to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and advancements in cochlear implants and modes of communication. _x000B_Kisor tells of his parents' drive to raise him as a member of the hearing and speaking world by teaching him effective lip-reading skills at a young age and encouraging him to communicate with his hearing peers. _x000B_Kisor updates the continuing disagreements between those who advocate sign language and those who practice speech and lip-reading, discusses the increased acceptance of deaf people's abilities and idiosyncrasies, and considers technological advancements that have enabled deaf people to communicate with the hearing world on its own terms.Nuclear Medicine Imaging: An Encyclopedic Dictionary
By Joseph A Thie. 2011
The rapidly growing area of nuclear medicine imaging receives only limited attention in broad-based medical dictionaries. This encyclopedic dictionary is…
intended to fill the gap. More than 400 entries of between one and three paragraphs are included, defining and carefully explaining terms in an appropriate degree of detail. The dictionary encompasses concepts used in planar, SPECT, and PET imaging protocols and covers both scanner operations and popular data analysis approaches. In spite of the mathematical complexities in the acquisition and analysis of images, the explanations given are easy to understand and many helpful concrete examples are provided. The book will be ideal for those who wish to obtain a rapid grasp of a concept beyond a definition of a few words but do not have the time to search the reference literature. The almost tutorial-like style accommodates the needs of students, nuclear medicine technologists, and varieties of other medical professionals.Innovationen verbreiten, optimieren und evaluieren
By Norbert Donner-Banzhoff, Stefan Bösner. 2012
Threshold: Emergency Responders On The U.S. - Mexico Border
By Ieva Jusionyte. 2018
Emergency responders on the US-Mexico border operate at the edges of two states. They rush patients to hospitals across country…
lines, tend to the broken bones of migrants who jump over the wall, and put out fires that know no national boundaries. Paramedics and firefighters on both sides of the border are tasked with saving lives and preventing disasters in the harsh terrain at the center of divisive national debates. Ieva Jusionyte’s firsthand experience as an emergency responder provides the background for her gripping examination of the politics of injury and rescue in the militarized region surrounding the US-Mexico border. Operating in this area, firefighters and paramedics are torn between their mandate as frontline state actors and their responsibility as professional rescuers, between the limits of law and pull of ethics. From this vantage they witness what unfolds when territorial sovereignty, tactical infrastructure, and the natural environment collide. Jusionyte reveals the binational brotherhood that forms in this crucible to stand in the way of catastrophe. Through beautiful ethnography and a uniquely personal perspective, Threshold provides a new way to understand politicized issues ranging from border security and undocumented migration to public access to healthcare today.Post-Anesthesia Care
By Heitz, James W.. 2016
The initial hours after surgery are a critical time in the care of the surgical patient. Familiarity with the clinical…
presentation of perioperative complications is important to achieving optimal outcomes. By taking an approach to complications based upon signs and symptoms seen in the early post-operative period among adult patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery, this book aids the practitioner in the clinical management of surgical patients during the often turbulent hours after surgery. After a brief introduction to PACU organization, this manual discusses the common and most serious symptoms encountered in the post-operative patient, giving guidance on diagnosis of the underlying disorder and the treatment options available. The book also includes chapters dedicated to subspecialty patients, including patients requiring post-operative mechanical ventilation, pediatric patients, patients with implantable cardiac devices, morbidly obese patients and the complex pain patient. This practical manual is essential reading for all practitioners working in the PACU environment.Catholics in Washington D.C. (Images of America)
By Christina Cox. 2015
The Catholic community of Washington, DC, has grown and changed dramatically since 1939, when Pope Pius XII separated the city…
from the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Catholics in Washington, DC preserves the passion and devotion of Catholics who had Godly visions of making new religious institutions, shrines, schools, hospitals, and churches while continuing to build on their faith. This collection of photographs does more than just highlight the achievements of famous Catholics, such as Archbishop Michael Curley of the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, Pres. John Kennedy, and Pope Francis; it illustrates the superb efforts of priests, nuns, missionaries, laypersons, and political figures who have come together with great pride to grow the Catholic Church in the nation's capital.Hundred Dollar Holiday: The Case for a More Joyful Christmas
By Bill Mckibben. 1998
Too many people have come to dread the approach of the holidays, a season that should -- and can --…
be the most relaxed, intimate, joyful, and spiritual time of the year. In this book, Bill McKibben offers some suggestions on how to rethink Christmas time, so that our current obsession with present-buying becomes less important than the dozens of other possible traditions and celebrations. Working through their local churches, McKibben and his colleagues found that people were hungry for a more joyful Christmas season. For many, trying to limit the amount of money they spent at Christmas to about a hundred dollars per family, was a real spur to their creativity -- and a real anchor against the relentless onslaught of commercials and catalogs that try to say Christmas is only Christmas if it comes from a store. McKibben shows how the store-bought Christmas developed and how out of tune it is with our current lives; when we're really eager for family fellowship for community involvement, for contact with the natural world, and also for the blessed silence and peace that the season should offer. McKibben shows us how to return to a simpler and more enjoyable holiday.Christmas is too wonderful a celebration to give up on, too precious a time simply to repeat the same empty gestures from year to year. This book will serve as a road map to a Christmas far more joyful than the ones you've known in the past.
