The Cybergypsies
By Indra Sinha. 1999
THE CYBERGYPSIES describes one man's exploration of cyberspace over many years and the folk he meets on the Net, the…
cybergypsies: virus writers, hackers, witches, sex-peddlars, conmen, net vamps, randy paratroopers posing as girls; the A-bomb blueprints he was offered for sale. He recounts with startling honesty how he nearly lost everything because of his obsession with the Net and how the Net can be as dangerous and destructive as any drug addiction. However, the author also shows how the Internet can be used for positive aims, as he describes how he fought for human rights with desperate appeals for the Kurdish refugees in the wake of the Gulf War and justice for Bhopal's gas victims in campaigns involving Jeffrey Archer and Don McCullin.Ghost Girl: The True Story Of A Child In Desperate Peril - And A Teacher Who Saved Her

Yet a little girl was living in a nightmare, and Torey responded in the only way she knew how—with courage, compassion, and dedication—demonstrating once again the tremendous power of love and the resilience of the human spirit.WWJD? By Frank Peretti. 2000

By Aubrey Anable. 2018
How gaming intersects with systems like history, bodies, and code Why do we so compulsively play video games? Might it…
have something to do with how gaming affects our emotions? In Playing with Feelings, scholar Aubrey Anable applies affect theory to game studies, arguing that video games let us “rehearse” feelings, states, and emotions that give new tones and textures to our everyday lives and interactions with digital devices. Rather than thinking about video games as an escape from reality, Anable demonstrates how video games—their narratives, aesthetics, and histories—have been intimately tied to our emotional landscape since the emergence of digital computers.Looking at a wide variety of video games—including mobile games, indie games, art games, and games that have been traditionally neglected by academia—Anable expands our understanding of the ways in which these games and game studies can participate in feminist and queer interventions in digital media culture. She gives a new account of the touchscreen and intimacy with our mobile devices, asking what it means to touch and be touched by a game. She also examines how games played casually throughout the day create meaningful interludes that give us new ways of relating to work in our lives. And Anable reflects on how games allow us to feel differently about what it means to fail.Playing with Feelings offers provocative arguments for why video games should be seen as the most significant art form of the twenty-first century and gives the humanities passionate, incisive, and daring arguments for why games matter.History of the Later Roman Empire, Vol. 1

By Vernon Mcgee. 1982
How do you understand the dimensions, power, mind, will, and love of God when He is beyond definition? Dr. J.…
Vernon McGee unravels the mystery of who God is and offers a solid theological understanding for the layman. Thoroughly biblical, Who Is God? dos not attempt to put Him in a box, but instead examines the biblical revelation and affirms that though God cannot be measured by human standards, He does reveal Himself to us. From learning about the Trinity to discussing God's character, Dr. McGee gives both believer and nonbeliever wise counsel on who God is and how He makes Himself known to us.Memoirs of a Buccaneer: Dampier's New Voyage Round the World, 1697
By William Dampier. 1968
It was William Dampier's passion to see the world that turned him into a buccaneer. He possessed remarkable powers of…
observation and analysis, and his life as a seventeenth-century navigator aboard pirate and privateering ships is brilliantly detailed in his journal. Throughout his travels of Central and South America and the East Indies, Dampier provides riveting accounts of sea battles against Spanish treasure ships, as well as pirate life, lore, and customs. Originally published in 1697 as the New Voyage, his journal became an instant success, and has been read ever since as one of the greatest travel and adventure accounts ever written. But Memoirs of a Buccaneer is far more than historical adventure. Dampier was a man of intelligence and education with a strong naturalist's urge, and his book quickly became a vital source of information on the geology, biology, zoology, and peoples of the lands he visited. His descriptions of the West Indian manatee, booby birds, cacao, and mangrove trees--flora and fauna never before heard of in England and the Continent--are incredibly accurate. His notes on the produce of Guam and Mindanao--coconuts, vanilla beans, bananas, breadfruit, and more--exerted a powerful influence on Britain's explorations and colonizations. And his depictions of Central America's Mosquito Indians and the natives of Mindanao proved to be highly reliable. The influence of this classic book on the work of later travelers is incalculable, leading writers such as Defoe, Swift, and Coleridge to borrow both facts and literary style from it. It continues to inspire readers today. The definitive collection of first-hand accounts of the world's outlaw motorcycle gangs Outlaw bikers consider themselves 'the last free people…

By Jerry Coyne. 2012
Deserted by his mother and abandoned by his father at just three months old, Jerry Coyne was sent to live…
in a Catholic children's home run by nuns of the order of the Sisters of Nazareth. Life soon settled into a rhythm and then, one day, the beatings started. Harsh, vicious punishments became part of everyday life for the bemused little boy as the nuns attempted to beat the Devil out of him. Jerry began to hide behind bad behaviour and at the age of 12, his defiance resulted in him being sent to a boarding for boys with behavioural problems. Life then got worse when his housemaster, the man whose job it was to take care of him, began a regime of mental, physical and sexual abuse. Years of self-hatred and guilt led to Jerry suffering from a severe stammer and, eventually, he tried to hang himself. This was the turning point and, after finally finding the courage to go to the authorities, Jerry and numerous other victims came forward and were instrumental in the conviction and imprisonment of their abuser. Devil's Child is the devastating true story of a childhood destroyed by abuse and of a young man's struggle to try to come to terms with the past and believe in the future. The Great Awakening and Southern Backcountry Revolutionaries
By Richard J. Chacon, Michael Charles Scoggins. 2014
This work documents the impact that the Great Awakening had on the inhabitants of colonial America's Southern Backcountry. Special emphasis…
is placed on how this religious revival furrowed the ground on which the seeds of the American Revolution would sprout. The investigation shows how the Great Awakening can be traced to the Europe's Age of Enlightenment. This effort also demonstrates how and why this revival spread so rapidly throughout the colonies. Special focus is placed on how the Great Awakening impacted the mindset of colonists of the Southern Backcountry. Most significantly, this research demonstrates how this 18thcentury revival not only cultivated a sense of American national identity, but how it also fostered a colonial mindset against established authority which, in turn, facilitated the success of the American Revolution. Additionally, this investigation will document (from a cross-cultural perspective) how religious revivals have fueled other revolutionary movements around the world. Such analysis will include the Celtic Druid Revolt, the Maji-Maji Rebellion of East Africa along with the Mad Man's War in Southeast Asia. Lastly, the ethical ramifications of minimizing (or denying) the role that religion played in political and social transformations around the world will be addressed. This final point is of paramount importance given current trend in academia to minimize the role that religion played in spurring revolutions while emphasizing material (i. e. economic) causal factors. This attempt at divorcing religion from history is misguided and unethical because it is not only misleading but it also fails to fully acknowledge the beliefs and values that motivated individuals to take certain actions in the first place.Created to counteract the spiritual imbalance that MI can cause, the Moral Injury Reconciliation (MIR) methodology is a 9-week, 3-phased…
spiritual care treatment, for Veteran and family transformation. This book presents this methodology as a trans-diagnostic approach for practitioners working with clients with MI, PTSD, grief and military sexual trauma. Using the language of reconciliation and spiritual transformation in the context of working therapeutically with Veterans, the author shows how chaplains and others involved in spiritual care can work on the assessment and therapy of those who have experienced MI during their combat experience. It reconciles past trauma, creates a focused 'here-and-now' present and anticipates a hopeful future through spiritual awareness, communication skills and altruism.Captain Phil Harris: The Legendary Crab Fisherman, Our Hero, Our Dad
By Steve Springer, Josh Harris, Jake Harris, Blake Chavez. 2013
The electrifying behind-the-scenes story of the late Deadliest Catch star, from his own two sons.Prior to his untimely death in…
2010, Captain Phil Harris was a star of Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch, the hit show that follows the exhilarating lives of Alaskan crab fishermen as they brave the vicious Bering Sea. He led his crew through hurricane-force winds and fourstory- high waves, hauling in millions of pounds of crab and raking in millions of dollars. Phil worked hard, but he played even harder. His life on shore--from his rebellious days to his tempestuous marriages, from his addictive habits to his fundamental American success story--could serve as a reality show in itself. He lived his life at Mach speed: the blitz of crab season, the six-figure paydays, the thunderous motorcycles, and the drug-fueled parties. High-speed chases and all-night blackjack binges were par for the course. But as wild as Phil could be, he was always openhearted and infectiously friendly. He was a devoted friend, a loving father, a steadfast captain, and a hero to audiences across America and around the world. His death in 2010, the result of stroke and heart failure at the age of fifty-three, left a hole in the hearts of millions. In this exclusive authorized biography, Phil's two surviving sons, Josh and Jake Harris, team up with bestselling author Steve Springer and coauthor Blake Chavez to share the thrilling story of Phil's remarkable life.Edmund Booth: Deaf Pioneer
By Harry G. Lang. 2004
Edmund Booth was born in 1810 and died in 1905, and during the 94 years of his life, he epitomized…
virtually everything that characterized an American legend of that century. In his prime, Booth stood 6 feet, 3 inches tall, weighed in at 210 pounds, and wore a long, full beard. He taught school in Hartford, CT, then followed his wife-to-be Mary Ann Walworth west to Anamosa, Iowa, where in 1840, he built the area's first frame house. He pulled up stakes nine years later to travel the Overland Trail on his way to join the California Gold Rush. After he returned to Iowa in 1854, he became the editor of the Anamosa Eureka, the local newspaper. Edmund Booth fit perfectly the mold of the ingenious pioneer of 19th-century America, except for one unusual difference -- he was deaf. Edmund Booth: Deaf Pioneer follows the amazing career of this American original and his equally amazing wife in fascinating detail. Author Harry G. Lang vividly portrays Booth and his wife by drawing from a remarkable array of original material. A prolific writer, Booth corresponded with his fiancé from the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, and he kept a journal during his days on the California trail, parts of which have been reproduced here. He also wrote an autobiographical essay when he was 75, and his many newspaper articles through the years bore first-hand witness to the history of his times, from the Civil War to the advent of the 20th century. Edmund Booth depicts a larger-than-life man in larger-than-life times, but perhaps its greatest contribution derives from its narrative about pioneer days as seen through Deaf eyes. Booth became a respected senior statesman of the American Deaf community, and blended with his stories of the era's events are anecdotes and issues vital to Deaf people and their families. His story proves again that extraordinary people vary in many ways, but they often possess a common motive in acting to enhance their own communities.Guía de un joven para las buenas decisiones: Tu vida a la manera de Dios
