After Genocide: How Ordinary Jews Face the Holocaust
By Sue Lieberman. 2014
2015 was the seventieth anniversary of the end of World War Two, and, for Jews, the seventieth anniversary of the…
end of the worst Jewish catastrophe in diaspora history. After Genocide considers how, more than two generations since the war, the events of the Holocaust continue to haunt Jewish people and the worldwide Jewish population, even where there was no immediate family connection. Drawing from interviews with "ordinary" Jews from across the age spectrum, After Genocide focuses on the complex psychological legacy of the Holocaust. Is it, as many think, a "collective trauma"? How is a community detached in space and time traumatised by an event which neither they nor their immediate ancestors experienced?"Ordinary" Jews' own words bring to life a narrative which looks at how commonly-recognised attributes of trauma - loss, anger, fear, guilt, shame - are integral to Jewish reactions to the Holocaust.A Psychoanalytic Odyssey: Painted Guinea Pigs, Dreams, and Other Realities

By Robert French, Peter Simpson. 2014
This book describes an approach based on attention that can help individuals and groups to cooperate more effectively. It presents…
the first book-length reassessment of Wilfred Bion's ideas on groups. Every group has a purpose or purposes - or, as Bion put it, "every group, however casual, meets to 'do' something." The approach described here shows how individual group members' use of attention - both broad or "evenly suspended" and focused - can promote a better understanding of purpose, making it possible for them to do what they have met to do. This work of attention enables group members to maintain a clear sense of their purpose and also to recognise how easily they can become distracted, losing focus and dispersing their energies into activities that are off task. The approach builds on the authors' experience of using Bion's insights into group dynamics over twenty-five years in different contexts, formal and informal, as group members, managers, leaders, teachers, consultants, researchers, family members, and friends.A Personal Journey Through Psychotherapy: A Case Study Revisited
By Susan M. Fereday. 2014
This book is a personal account of the enduring value of an appropriate psychotherapeutic intervention, and is set within the…
author's lifespan to date. It is also a unique view of how it feels to be the subject of a published case study. Following a long period of resistance to the therapeutic process, a direct channel to the author's unconscious is established via the art of the written word. It is a first person, chronological account of the psychological signposts that relentlessly point the author toward an unavoidable therapeutic encounter, one that will ultimately have the strength to contain her frightening experience of mental disturbance. The reader is afforded the opportunity to watch the story unfold, and to draw their own academic conclusions. Some of the psychological processes are presented in 'real' time, and will help to illustrate the link between experience, theory and practice in psychotherapy.Intimate Relationships (Third Edition)

By Brian D. Cox. 2019
This book discusses key figures in history in the context of their time, takes students on a carefully-formulated, chronological journey…
through the build-up of psychology from ancient times to the present, and seeks to draw students into the way science is done, rather than merely presenting them with historical fact. Students will learn not only the ‘what’, but the ‘why’ of the history of psychology and will acquire the necessary background historical material to fully understand those concepts. Organized around a series of paradigms—a shift from scholasticism to rationalism or empiricism, and a shift from idealism to materialism—the book seeks to portray psychology as an on-going, evolving process, rather than a theory. The Postsecular Sacred: Jung, Soul and Meaning in an Age of Change
By David Tacey. 2020
In The Postsecular Sacred: Jung, Soul and Meaning in an Age of Change, David Tacey presents a unique psychological study…
of the postsecular, adding a Jungian perspective to a debate shaped by sociology, philosophy and religious studies. In this interdisciplinary exploration, Tacey looks at the unexpected return of the sacred in Western societies, and how the sacred is changing our understanding of humanity and culture. Beginning with Jung’s belief that the psyche has never been secular, Tacey examines the new desire for spiritual experience and presents a logic of the unconscious to explain it. Tacey argues that what has fuelled the postsecular momentum is the awareness that something is missing, and the idea that this could be buried in the unconscious is dawning on sociologists and philosophers. While the instinct to connect to something greater is returning, Tacey shows that this need not imply that we are regressing to superstitions that science has rejected. The book explores indigenous spirituality in the context of the need to reanimate the world, not by going back to the past but by being inspired by it. There are chapters on ecopsychology and quantum physics, and, using Australia as a case study, the book also examines the resistance of secular societies to becoming postsecular. Approaching postsecularism through a Jungian perspective, Tacey argues that we should understand God in a manner that accords with the time, not go back to archaic, rejected images of divinity. The sacred is returning in an age of terrorism, and this is not without significance in terms of the ‘explosive’ impact of spirituality in our time. Innovative and relevant to the world we live in, this will be of great interest to academics and scholars of Jungian studies, anthropology, indigenous studies, philosophy, religious studies and sociology due to its transdisciplinary scope. It would also be a useful resource for analytical psychologists, Jungian analysts and psychotherapists.Social Aspects of Memory presents a compelling study of how ordinary people remember war. Whilst the book focuses on the…
cities of Sarajevo and East Sarajevo during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Jeftic also presents narratives from other war-torn cities and countries around the world. This book adopts a unique approach, by looking at how perpetrators and victims (as well as new generations who may not remember the war directly) manage in the aftermath of war. Jeftic explores how our memories of war and violence are formed, and how we can learn to reconcile those memories, individually and as a collective. Drawing on the author’s own empirical and extensive research, the book explores the connection between memories for significant war events, transgenerational transmission of memories, bias for in-group wrongdoings and readiness for reconciliation between two groups. Giving a voice to underrepresented narratives and prioritising the importance of expression as a necessary catalyst for reconciliation, this book is essential reading for those interested in collective and transgenerational memory and memory studies, especially in relation to the aftermath of the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.Social-Cognitive Development in Context (Psychology Library Editions: Social Psychology)
By Felicisima Serafica. 2015
The relationship between the cognitive and social spheres of human functioning and their context has long been regarded by social…
and behavioural scientists as a central theoretical issue. By the early 1980s a number of empirical studies had further elucidated the nature of this relationship but no attempt had been made to present a coherent picture of the research and developments in this increasingly popular area of study. Originally published in 1982, the topics covered in this book filled the gap admirably. They present a view of the development of aspects of the self and of self-other relations and how these two lines of development interact within a given context. All the contributions attempt to portray the child’s developing awareness of the self in relation to the social world, but all consider it from different perspectives and in varying degrees of detail. This useful collection, by a number of well-known contributors, should still be of great value to students of developmental and social psychology.Social Fabrics of the Mind (Psychology Library Editions: Social Psychology #7)
By Michael R.A. Chance. 2015
Originally published in 1988, this book outlines a new evolutionary paradigm for understanding human society and mental structure, originating from…
the editor's work in primate ethology. It is supported and further elaborated by the contributors. Chance argues that two modes of social interaction, the agonic and hedonic, underlie social life and corresponding mentality. In the agonic mode we are concerned with self-security and our attention is much taken up with being accepted by a group. This mode is based on a recently discovered state of inhibited (braked) mental arousal. Social behaviour is either authoritarian or authority subservient, and has a tendency to control or be controlled. It curbs intelligence and restricts personality development. In the hedonic mode we are freer to form a network of personal relationships that are typically mutually supportive. The hedonic mode leads to the development of self-confidence and a relaxed empathic and collaborative personality with intelligence enhanced. The volume will still be of interest to all concerned with human affairs including those working in ethology, primatology, anthropology, social psychology, psychiatry and political sociology.Social Psychology: The Study of Human Interaction (Psychology Library Editions: Social Psychology)
By Ralph Turner, Theodore Newcomb, Philip Converse. 2015
Combining the efforts of sociologists and psychologists, this work, originally published in 1952 and revised in 1966, embraces these two…
disciplines to show how social-psychological problems must be viewed in individual as well as general terms. Human interaction is, therefore, the main theme of this authoritative and rewarding volume, which offers a more comprehensive viewpoint than texts written from with a strictly psychological or a strictly sociological approach. Whenever it can be shown that interaction intervenes between individual and group variables, the authors carefully note the manner in which this occurs. Well written yet succinct, the chapters are closely integrated to present continuously developing concepts of the time. Research illustrations are set off typographically but skilfully woven into the related text. Three appendixes, one on the measurement of individual attitudes, a second on survey research, and a third on Bale’s interaction process analysis, may be consulted without interrupting the flow of the other chapters. The Social Psychology of HIV Infection (Psychology Library Editions: Social Psychology)
By John Pryor, Glenn Reeder. 2015
In the early 1980s we witnessed the birth of one of the most complex and perplexing social problems faced by…
modern society: the epidemic of infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Originally published in 1993 this title looks at the social psychology surrounding HIV and AIDS. The organization of the volume centres upon two themes: The Theoretical Roots of Prevention and The Dilemma of the PWA (person with AIDS). The goal of this volume is not to evaluate previous attempts to answer these social problems, but to provide theoretical analyses of some of the basic sociopsychological processes that underlie the problems. Over 20 years on this is a snapshot of research into HIV and AIDS and attitudes of the time looking at social problems that are very much still with us.Moon Asheville & the Great Smoky Mountains (Travel Guide)

There is a deeper mystery at play, one that women struggling with fertility can tap into.In this ground-breaking book, holistic fertility doctor Dr. Julie Von shows women a new way to approach fertility so that the entire experience of becoming pregnant is energetically uplifting. She shares tools and techniques that help nourish and build women's receptive energy to connect to the spiritual and unseen aspects of creating life. With close to 20 years of clinical experience, Dr. Von has witnessed firsthand the power of the spiritual within fertility to balance the hormonal system and promote a healthy pregnancy. Why psychology is in peril as a scientific discipline—and how to save itPsychological science has made extraordinary discoveries about the…
human mind, but can we trust everything its practitioners are telling us? In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that a lot of research in psychology is based on weak evidence, questionable practices, and sometimes even fraud. The Seven Deadly Sins of Psychology diagnoses the ills besetting the discipline today and proposes sensible, practical solutions to ensure that it remains a legitimate and reliable science in the years ahead. In this unflinchingly candid manifesto, Chris Chambers shows how practitioners are vulnerable to powerful biases that undercut the scientific method, how they routinely torture data until it produces outcomes that can be published in prestigious journals, and how studies are much less reliable than advertised. Left unchecked, these and other problems threaten the very future of psychology as a science—but help is here.Eat to Feed: 80 Nourishing Recipes for Breastfeeding Moms
