By Colette Chiland. 2003
Is psychotherapeutic treatment powerless in the case of transsexualism? This intriguing volume by a French psychoanalyst with extensive experience of…
working with transsexuals is a useful addition to the debate on transsexualism and the definitions of sex and gender. Transsexuals feel that the opposite sex to their biological sex is their true identity - their true body and self. The idea of "hormonal and surgical sex reassignment" appeals to them; it would biologically put right what they already know to be right and true in their minds. The author discusses the problems of "reassigning" ones sex and argues that surgery alone cannot fix the situation. This book explores some of the ways in which an understanding of poetry, and the poetic impulse, can be fruitfully…
informed by psychoanalytic ideas. It could be argued that there is a particular affinity between poetry and psychoanalysis, in that both pay close attention to the precise meanings of linguistic expression, and both, though in different ways, are centrally concerned with unconscious processes. The contributors to this volume, nearly all of them clinicians with a strong interest in literature, explore this connection in a variety of ways, focusing on the work of particular poets, from the prophet Ezekiel to Seamus Heaney.Part of the Tavistock Clinic Series.AP Q&A Psychology: 600 Questions and Answers (Barron's Test Prep)

By James A. Knapp. 2003
Illustrating the Past is a study of the status of visual and verbal media in early modern English representations of…
the past. It focuses on general attitudes towards visual and verbal representations of history as well as specific illustrated books produced during the period. Through a close examination of the relationship of image to text in light of contemporary discussions of poetic and aesthetic practice, the book demonstrates that the struggle between the image and the word played a profoundly important role in England's emergent historical self-awareness. The opposition between history and story, fact and fiction, often tenuous, provided a sounding board for deeper conflicts over the form in which representations might best yield truth from history. The ensuing schism between poets and historians over the proper venue for the lessons of the past manifested itself on the pages of early modern printed books. The discussion focuses on the word and image relationships in several important illustrated books printed during the second half of the sixteenth century-including Holinshed's Chronicles (1577) and Foxe's Book of Martyrs (1563, 1570)-in the context of contemporary works on history and poetics, such as Sir Philip Sidney's Apology for Poetry and Thomas Blundeville's The true order and Method of wryting and reading Hystories. Illustrating the Past specifically answers two important questions concerning the resultant production of literary and historical texts in the period: Why did the use of images in printed histories suddenly become unpopular at the end of the sixteenth century? and What impact did this publishing trend have on writers of literary and historical texts?Woman's Relationship with Herself: Gender, Foucault and Therapy (Women and Psychology)
By Helen O'Grady. 2005
Woman's Relationship with Herself explores the relationship women have with themselves and demonstrates how this relationship is often dominated by…
debilitating practices of self-surveillance. Employing Foucault's notion of panoptical power, Helen O'Grady illuminates the link between this kind of self-surveillance and the broader mechanisms of social control, arguing that these negative practices prevent women from enjoying a satisfying, affirming relationship with themselves. Cultural factors that render women vulnerable to dissatisfying self-relations are identified and analysed and, drawing on the insights of Foucault, feminism and narrative therapy, the possibilities for developing a more empowering relationship with the self are examined. This innovative contribution to feminist debates about gender and the self will be of interest to students and researchers in social psychology, feminist psychology, mental health studies and gender studies, and to practitioners in psychological therapies and counselling psychology.Man for Himself: An Inquiry into the Psychology of Ethics (Routledge Classics)
By Erich Fromm. 2003
Erich Fromm fought long and hard for the rights and freedoms of the individual. He also recognized that fundamental to…
this pursuit is the promotion of self-knowledge. In encouraging people to analyze their own behavior, Fromm identified the crucial link between psychology and ethics that underpins all our actions. Moreover, he saw in this a way out of the meaningless impasse which he regarded as the plight of the modern human race. The task that Fromm sets himself, therefore, in Man for Himself is no less than to identify "what man is, how he ought to live, and how the tremendous energies within man can be released and used productively." The resulting book is ample witness to Fromm's success. It makes for exciting, illuminating, even life-changing reading.Understanding Perversion in Clinical Practice is a volume in the eagerly anticipated clinical practice monograph series from the Society of…

By Tessa Adams, Andrea Duncan. 2003
The Feminine Case is a collection of papers that debate the issue of gender from a Jungian perspective. Particular attention…
is paid to the discussion of Jung's "transcendent function" and what this offers women in the process of individualisation. Attention is also given to the revisionist work of James Hillman and to relevant issues found within post-Lacanian critique, principally in the works of Julia Kristeva, Luce Irigaray and Helene Cixous. The chapters deal with a range of issues and aim to promote further discussion. One theme discussed in the book is the way in which feminine language is formed within a masculine domain and how it can and is changing. Works of literature, notably those of Charlotte Bronte and The Tempest, are explored and examined in conjunction with Jungian themes. The feminine in relation to the maternal, and in its lack of relation to the divine, are two other engaging topics discussed in this volume. This collection involves the reader in a welcome debate on the role of the feminine in the Jungian world.
