By Matilda White Riley, Joseph D. Matarazzo, Andrew Baum. 1987
Originally published in 1987, this volume, and the working conference that preceded it, broke new ground in addressing the complex…
topic of aging, health, and behavior. Taking a bio-behavioral approach to a range of topics, contributors to this book advanced their disciplines. This volume as well as searching for important interfaces between behavior and health also added the dynamic aspect of aging. Cells, organ systems, and whole human beings all change as they move through life, linking health in varied and intricate ways to changes in behavior patterns, social structures, and cultural values and norms.Up to the 1990s, the influence of brain function disturbances and causes of dementia in the elderly had mostly been…
overlooked as a possible explanation for antisocial or unusual behaviour. As a result, these had tended not to be included in assessment and training programmes.Drugs, Ageing and Society: Social and Pharmacological Perspectives (Routledge Library Editions: Aging)
By Bruce Burns, Chris Phillipson. 1986
During the 1970s and 1980s prescription and over-the-counter drugs had come to play a major role in the health care…
of older people. Originally published in 1986, this book reviews the historical background to this development and explores its social and pharmacological implications. The main aim of the study was to provide a critical perspective on drug use together with a framework for developing effective prescribing policies. The authors do not, in developing their arguments, reject the enormous value of drugs in the treatment of many illnesses affecting older people; they do, however, criticise excessive as well as inappropriate prescribing. The intention was to provide some practical illustrations of how the harmful effects of drug use can be curtailed. This book was aimed, in particular, at workers in the health services, for example: doctors, health visitors, district nurses, pharmacists, the professions allied to medicine. However, it should also be of interest to other groups such as social workers, carers, support groups and older people themselves.Russisch - Deutsch für die Pflege zu Hause: Русско-немецкий разговорник для ухода за пациентами в домашних условиях

the fullness of their wisdom Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching reminds its readers that the sage has been venerated in China for thousands of years. Twenty years ago, William Martin subtly and powerfully captured the complex emotions connected with growing older in this free-verse interpretation of the Tao. His words resonate just as much now, encouraging today’s sages to recognize their inestimable worth in a youth-centric world that often goes astray: “If there is to be a transformation, it will be the sages among us who will show the way. The elders, the wisewomen, the shamans, the grandmothers, and the grandfathers will provide the guidance, for they have undergone the necessary initiations . . . and emerged into the spaciousness of simplicity, freedom, and joy.”Evolving from Digital Transformation to Digital Acceleration Using The Galapagos Framework challenges established thinking and offers a new way to…
deliver digital change. It introduces The Galapagos Framework, which is a new, innovative, and human-centric approach to transformational change. The framework allows organizations to move from digital transformation to digital acceleration, resulting in the creation of exciting and groundbreaking products as well as having a positive impact on the motivation and well-being of their teams.Digital Acceleration is an iterative process that allows organizations to deliver transformations and demonstrate continual progress at pace. Rather than tackling the transformation as one large single event, Digital Acceleration enables organizations to improve one or, at most, two discrete areas of the business quickly and then move onto the next area needing improvement.Presenting a detailed guide to The Galapagos Framework, the book also highlights solutions to common issues, expert case studies, and The Galapagos Roadmap. It discusses how the framework provides the key to increasing productivity, delivery velocity, and performance while reducing cost and complexity, ultimately resulting in digital and business success. The book demonstrates how The Galapagos Framework operates in practice to provide clear solutions to common issues that are classifi ed into Human Elements, Organizational Factors, and the Delivery Aspects. The book also explains why the current approaches to digital transformation are failing and shows how digital leaders and organizations can: Increase productivity Reduce costs Improve delivery performance Reduce operational, financial, and delivery risks Increase profits Deliver digital transformation successCross Country: A 3,700-Mile Run to Explore Unseen America

The Wolves of K Street: The Secret History of How Big Money Took Over Big Government
By Brody Mullins, Luke Mullins. 2024
Two veteran investigative journalists trace the rise of the modern lobbying industry through the three dynasties—one Republican, two Democratic—that have…
enabled corporate interests to infiltrate American politics and undermine our democracy. On K Street, a few blocks from the White House, you&’ll find the offices of the most powerful men in Washington. In the 1970s, the city&’s center of gravity began to shift away from elected officials in big marble buildings to a handful of savvy, handsomely paid operators who didn&’t answer to any fixed constituency. The cigar-chomping son of a powerful Congressman, an illustrious political fixer with a weakness for modern art, a Watergate-era dirty trickster, the city&’s favorite cocktail party host…these were the sorts of men who now ran Washington. Over four decades, they&’d chart new ways to turn their clients&’ cash into political leverage, abandoning favor-trading in smoke-filled rooms for increasingly sophisticated tactics like &“shadow lobbying,&” where underground campaigns sparked seemingly organic public outcries to pressure lawmakers into taking actions that would ultimately benefit corporate interests rather than the common good. With billions of dollars at play, these lobbying dynasties enshrined in Washington a pro-business consensus that would guide the country&’s political leaders—Democrats and Republicans alike—allowing companies to flourish even as ordinary Americans buckled under the weight of stagnant wages, astronomical drug prices, unsafe home loans, and digital monopolies. A good lobbyist could kill even a piece of legislation supported by the president, both houses of Congress, and a majority of Americans. Yet, nothing lasts forever. Amidst a populist backlash to the soaring inequality these lobbyists helped usher in, Washington&’s pro-business alliance suddenly began to unravel. And while new ways for corporations to control the federal government would emerge, the men who&’d once built K Street found themselves under legal scrutiny and on the verge of financial collapse. One had his namesake firm ripped away by his own colleagues. Another watched his business shut down altogether. One went to prison. And one was found dead behind the 18th green of an exclusive golf club, with a bottle of $1,500 wine at his feet and a bullet in his head. A dazzling and infuriating portrait of fifty years of corporate influence in Washington, The Wolves of K Street is a masterpiece of narrative nonfiction—irresistibly dramatic, spectacularly timely, explosive in its revelations, and absolutely impossible to put down.Muhammad Ali: A Little Golden Book Biography (Little Golden Book)

and Black American communities. In the spring of 1992, after a jury returned not guilty verdicts in the trial of four police officers charged in the brutal beating of a Black man, Rodney King, Los Angeles was torn apart. Thousands of fires were set, causing more than a billion dollars in damage. In neighborhoods abandoned by the police, protestors and storeowners exchanged gunfire. More than 12,000 people were arrested and 2,400 injured. Sixty-three died. In Rising from the Ashes, award-winning author Paula Yoo draws on the experience of the city’s Korean American community to narrate and illuminate this uprising, from the racism that created economically disadvantaged neighborhoods torn by drugs and gang-related violence, to the tensions between the city’s minority communities. At its heart are the stories of three lives and three families: those of Rodney King; of Latasha Harlins, a Black teenager shot and killed by a Korean American storeowner; and Edward Jae Song Lee, a Korean American man killed in the unrest. Woven throughout, and set against a minute-by-minute account of the uprising, are the voices of dozens others: police officers, firefighters, journalists, business owners, and activists whose recollections give texture and perspective to the events of those five days in 1992 and their impact over the years that followed.Your Vote Matters: How We Elect the US President

By Annik LaFarge. 2024
The most comprehensive, up-to-date, and acclaimed guide to the High Line by the leading expert on the history of the…
park—now in a fully revised editionBuilt atop a former freight railroad, the “park in the sky” is regularly cited as one of the premiere examples of adaptive reuse and quickly became one of New York’s most popular destinations, attracting more than 8 million visitors a year. This updated Third Edition of On the High Line— published to coincide with the fifteenth anniversary of the park’s opening—remains the definitive guide to the park that transformed an entire neighborhood and became an inspiration to cities around the globe. In short entries organized by roughly two city block sections, the guide provides rich details about everything in view on both sides of the park. Illustrated with more than 110 black & white photographs, it covers historic and modern architecture; plants and horticulture; and important industries and technological innovations that developed in the neighborhoods the park traverses, from book publishing and food distribution to the introduction of cold storage and the development of radar, the elevator, and talking movies. Updated to include newly opened sections of the park, this edition also features a new conversation pertaining to the more controversial side of the High Line’s story and how it became a poster child for the most grievous manifestations of gentrification and inequity in public spaces. Author Annik LaFarge provides a frank discussion on how the park’s leadership created a platform for discussing these issues and for advising other projects on how to work more inclusively and from a social justice and equity perspective. On the High Line serves as an educated travel companion, someone invisibly perched on a visitor’s shoulder who can answer every question, including what was here before, moving back in time through the early 20th century, the Industrial Revolution, and the colonial and pre-European times when this stretch of what we call Manhattan was home to the Lenape people and much of it was covered by the waters of the Hudson River. A companion website with more than 650 photos—historic, contemporary, rooftop and aerial—can be viewed at HighLineBook.com.Folklore of Lake Erie
