By Lewis Goodings, Darren Ellis, Ian Tucker. 2024
This is the first book to look exclusively from at the use of MHapps from an applied psychosocial perspective. Much of…
the academic literature on MHapps in psychology focuses on the clinical efficacy of using apps (e.g., depression reduction as result of using a certain app) and will typically report on the use of randomised controlled trials (or a similar method) to illustrate the use of apps as a tool for improving a psychological condition. Therefore, the main benefit of this book is that it recognises the impact of apps from a social perspective and will aim to show how everyday forms of distress are embedded in the use of these apps and the broader set of relations that constitute people’s everyday lives. The content of this book will identify how an applied social perspective can offer insight into the power of apps to shape our sense of ourselves and of others. This book will be of use to educators and students in psychology, sociology, health studies, media studies andcultural studies.Surgery of Craniosynostosis and Related Midface Deformities: An Atlas and Step-by-Step Guide
By Michael Rasse. 2024
This atlas offers a comprehensive overview of osteotomies performed on the calvaria and midface for both syndromic and non-syndromic craniosynostosis. It…
presents a systematic approach, beginning with calvarial osteotomies. The author introduces a general type of osteotomy that can be applied for total vault remodeling in cases of total synostosis. These osteotomies can also be modified and used in single or combined synostoses. To shape the calvaria, the book describes the use of metal plates as a scaphold. These plates can be prebent on 3-D models and used to fix the segments after osteotomies. Following that, resorbable osteosynthesis is performed, and the metal plates are subsequently removed. This unique approach, combined with standardized osteotomies, ensures highly predictable results that are not currently described in textbooks. The book includes clinical examples for each type of synostosis and various combinations, including two-stage procedures and combinations with distraction techniques. These examples provide surgeons with a solid foundation for addressing different cases. In the chapter on midface osteotomies, the book explains the access and technique for performing the LeFort-III osteotomy using cadaver and clinical figures. It covers all types of LeFort-I to III osteotomies and their combinations through clinical cases. The book illustrates the osteotomies, osteosynthesis, distraction techniques, and combinations using clinical examples. Additionally, the book demonstrates the method of computer planning, the fabrication of osteotomy guides, and the use of preformed plates to define the position of the segments. The book's primary objective is to serve as a surgical guide that transcends the boundaries of medical specialties. Given that this type of surgery is often performed by different specialists across institutions and countries, the book aims to facilitate cooperation and provide a practical application tool for surgeons beyond offering a clinical overview. The Balance Within: The Science Connecting Health and Emotions
By Esther M. Sternberg. 2001
A thrilling scientific detective story, The Balance Within tells how researchers finally uncovered the elusive mind-body connection and what it…
means for our health. Since ancient times humans have felt intuitively that emotions and health are linked, and recently there has been much popular speculation about this notion. But until now, without compelling evidence, it has been impossible to say for sure that such a connection really exists and especially how it works. Now, that evidence has been discovered. In this beautifully written book, Dr. Esther Sternberg, whose discoveries were pivotal in helping to solve this mystery, provides first hand accounts of the breakthrough experiments that revealed the physical mechanisms - the nerves, cells, and hormones - used by the brain and immune system to communicate with each other. She describes just how stress can make us more susceptible to all types of illnesses, and how the immune system can alter our moods. Finally, she explains how our understanding of these connections in scientific terms is helping to answer such crucial questions as "Does stress make you sick?" "Is a positive outlook the key to better health?" and "How do our personal relationships, work, and other aspects of our lives affect our health?"A fascinating, elegantly written portrait of this rapidly emerging field with enormous potential for finding new ways to treat disease and cope with stress, The Balance Within is essential reading for anyone interested in making their body and mind whole again.Letters to a Young Novelist

By James Wynbrandt. 1998
For those on both sides of the dreaded dentist's chair, James Wynbrandt has written a witty, colorful, and richly informative…
history of the art and science of dentistry. To all of those dental patients whose whine rises in tandem with that of the drill, take note: You would do well to stifle your terror and instead offer thanks to Apollonia, the patron saint of toothache sufferers, that you face only fleeting discomfort rather than the disfiguring distress, or slow agonizing death oft meted out by dental-care providers of the past. The transition from yesterday's ignorance, misapprehension, and superstition to the enlightened and nerve-deadened protocols of today has been a long, slow, and very painful process. For example, did you know that: *Among the toothache remedies favored by Pierre Fauchard, the father of dentistry, was rinsing the mouth liberally with one's own urine.*George Washington never had wooden teeth. However, his chronic dental problems may have impacted the outcome of the American Revolution. *Soldiers in the Civil War needed at least two opposing front teeth to rip open powder envelopes. Some men called up for induction had their front teeth extracted to avoid service. *Teeth were harvested from as many as fifty thousand corpses after the Battle of Waterloo, a huge crop later used for dentures and transplants that became known as "Waterloo Teeth."The Matter of the Heart: A History of the Heart in Eleven Operations
By Thomas Morris. 2017
An eye-opening and heroic story of pioneering heart surgeons, structured around eleven operations. For thousands of years the human heart remained…
the deepest of mysteries; both home to the soul and an organ too complex to touch, let alone operate on. Then, in the late nineteenth century, medics began going where no one had dared go before. The following decades saw the mysteries of the heart exposed, thanks to pioneering surgeons, brave patients and even sacrificial dogs. In eleven landmark operations, Thomas Morris tells us stories of triumph, reckless bravery, swaggering arrogance, jealousy and rivalry, and incredible ingenuity: the trail-blazing ‘blue baby’ procedure that transformed wheezing infants into pink, healthy children; the first human heart transplant, which made headline news around the globe. And yet the heart still feels sacred: just before the operation to fit one of the first artificial hearts, the patient’s wife asked the surgeon if he would still be able to love her.The Matter of the Heart gives us a view over the surgeon’s shoulder, showing us the heart’s inner workings and failings. It describes both a human story and a history of risk-taking that has ultimately saved millions of lives.Mad Women: The Other Side of Life on Madison Avenue in the '60s and Beyond
By Jane Maas. 2012
"Breezy and salty." -The New York Times"Hilarious! Honest, intimate, this book tells it as it was." -Mary Wells Lawrence, author…
of A Big Life (In Advertising) and founding president of Wells Rich Greene "Breezy and engaging [though] ...The chief value of Mad Women is the witness it bears for younger women about the snobbery and sexism their mothers and grandmothers endured as the price of entry into mid-century American professional life." -The Boston Globe"A real-life Peggy Olson, right out of Mad Men." -Shelly Lazarus, Chairman, Ogilvy & MatherWhat was it like to be an advertising woman on Madison Avenue in the 60s and 70s - that Mad Men era of casual sex and professional serfdom? A real-life Peggy Olson reveals it all in this immensely entertaining and bittersweet memoir.Mad Women is a tell-all account of life in the New York advertising world by Jane Maas, a copywriter who succeeded in the primarily male jungle depicted in the hit show Mad Men. Fans of the show are dying to know how accurate it is: was there really that much sex at the office? Were there really three-martini lunches? Were women really second-class citizens? Jane Maas says the answer to all three questions is unequivocally "yes." Her book, based on her own experiences and countless interviews with her peers, gives the full stories, from the junior account man whose wife almost left him when she found the copy of Screw magazine he'd used to find "a date" for a client, to the Ogilvy & Mather's annual Boat Ride, a sex-and-booze filled orgy, from which it was said no virgin ever returned intact. Wickedly funny and full of juicy inside information, Mad Women also tackles some of the tougher issues of the era, such as unequal pay, rampant, jaw-dropping sexism, and the difficult choice many women faced between motherhood and their careers. The Fever: How Malaria Has Ruled Humankind for 500,000 Years
By Sonia Shah. 2010
In recent years, malaria has emerged as a cause célèbre for voguish philanthropists. Bill Gates, Bono, and Laura Bush are…
only a few of the personalities who have lent their names—and opened their pocketbooks—in hopes of curing the disease. Still, in a time when every emergent disease inspires waves of panic, why aren't we doing more to eradicate one of our oldest foes? And how does a parasitic disease that we've known how to prevent for more than a century still infect 500 million people every year, killing nearly 1 million of them?In The Fever, the journalist Sonia Shah sets out to answer these questions, delivering a timely, inquisitive chronicle of the illness and its influence on human lives. Through the centuries, she finds, we've invested our hopes in a panoply of drugs and technologies, and invariably those hopes have been dashed. From the settling of the New World to the construction of the Panama Canal, through wars and the advances of the Industrial Revolution, Shah tracks malaria's jagged ascent and the tragedies in its wake, revealing a parasite every bit as persistent as the insects that carry it. With distinguished prose and original reporting from Panama, Malawi, Cameroon, India, and elsewhere, The Fever captures the curiously fascinating, devastating history of this long-standing thorn in the side of humanity. The Serpents of Paradise: A Reader

By Mario A. Pfannstiel. 2023
This book explores the use of human-centered service design. Through a variety of case studies and best practices, it highlights…
ways to systematically improve the provision of healthcare services to different target and age groups in order to understand customer expectations and needs. The book also offers new insights into the dyadic relationship between service provider and customer, each of which has their own set of goals, purposes, and benefits and must cope with a scarcity of resources and opportunities to optimize and design. Written by recognized experts, scholars, and practitioners, this book demonstrates how, where, and when to successfully apply human-centered service design at multiple levels, including corporate, departmental, and product/service. Value-added services are not only assessed in terms of their effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity, but also bearing in mind human emotions, interactions, and communication techniques as an important part of service provision. Accordingly, the book will appeal to scholars and practitioners in the hospital and healthcare sector, and to anyone interested in organizational development, service business model innovation, customer involvement and perceptions, and the service experience.Talking to Strangers: Selected Essays, Prefaces, and Other Writings, 1967–2017
By Paul Auster. 2019
Includes new early writings: &“This vibrant collection fully displays Auster&’s wit and humanity . . . a fascinating glimpse into the mind of…
a celebrated author.&” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) Beginning with a short philosophical meditation written when he was twenty and concluding with nine political pieces that take on such issues as homelessness, 9/11, and the link between soccer and war, the forty-four pieces gathered in this volume offer a wide-ranging view of celebrated novelist Paul Auster&’s thoughts on a multitude of classic and contemporary writers, the high-wire exploits of Philippe Petit, how to improve life in New York City (in collaboration with visual artist Sophie Calle), and the long road he has traveled with his beloved manual typewriter. While writing for the New York Review of Books and other publications in the mid-1970s, young poet Auster gained recognition as an astute literary critic with essays on Laura Riding, John Ashbery, Samuel Beckett, Franz Kafka, Paul Celan, and others. By the late seventies and early eighties, as the poet was transforming himself into a novelist, he maintained an active double life by continuing his work as a translator and editing the groundbreaking anthology The Random House Book of Twentieth-Century Poetry. His prefaces to some of these books are included in Talking to Strangers, among them a heart-wrenching account of Stéphane Mallarmé&’s response to the death of his eight-year-old son, Anatole. In recent years, Auster explored the work of American artists spanning periods and disciplines: the notebooks of Nathaniel Hawthorne, the films of Jim Jarmusch, the writings of painter-collagist-illustrator Joe Brainard, and the three-hit shutout thrown by journeyman right-hander Terry Leach of the Mets. Also included here are several rediscovered works originally delivered in public: a 1982 lecture on Edgar Allan Poe, a 1999 blast against New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani, and one of the funniest introductions a poetry reading ever heard in the state of New Jersey. A collection of soaring intelligence and deepest humanity including never-before-published material, Talking to Strangers is an essential book by &“the most distinguished American writer of [his] generation . . . indeed its only author . . . with any claim to greatness&” (The Spectator).More than 200,000 words of great crime and suspense fictionEach year, Ed Gorman and Martin H. By Paul Auster. 2020
A collection of autobiographical nonfiction, including the memoir The Invention of Solitude, by the Booker Prize finalist and &“literary original&”…
(The Wall Street Journal). Paul Auster spent his decades-long writing career examining what it means to be truly alive. For the first time, in this self-curated collection, he stitches together various autobiographical writings to lay bare the trajectory of both his personal life and sense of self. From his breakout memoir, The Invention of Solitude, which solidified Auster&’s reputation as a canonical voice in American letters, to excerpts from his later memoirs, Winter Journal and Report from the Interior, readers are ushered into the inner workings of Auster&’s self-development. His sweeping recollection winds through the halls of Columbia University during the turbulent 1960s and into life as a young poet-turned-novelist, journeys into the past via newspaper clippings about a century-old murder case in his family, and dives headfirst into the realities that accompany aging today. Along the way, Auster continually challenges the notion of what autobiography can be, inverting the form through fragmentation and, ultimately, illustrating firsthand the brilliance behind &“one of the great writers of our time&” (San Francisco Chronicle).A Psychological Approach to Diagnosis: Using the ICD-11 as a Framework
By Geoffrey M. Reed, Pierre L.-J. Ritchie, Andreas Maercker, Tahilia J. Rebello. 2024
This groundbreaking volume, published by the American Psychological Association in partnership with the International Union of Psychological Science, provides a…
detailed guide to clinical diagnosis by psychologists and other health professionals based on the eleventh revision of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). The ICD-11 was adopted by the World Health Assembly in 2019 and came into effect as the global standard for health information and reporting in 2022. The ICD is the diagnostic system for mental disorders most widely used by mental health professionals around the world in their day-to-day clinical practice. This edited volume offers a step-by-step approach to diagnosis, giving mental health professionals around the world the tools they need to apply ICD-11 diagnostic requirements for mental, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental disorders as the basis for delivering high quality, evidence-informed care. A psychological approach to diagnosis is a conceptually driven, person-oriented, biopsychosociocultural formulation that integrates pertinent history, behavior, symptoms, phenomenology, and functioning. A psychological approach focuses on psychological mechanisms and principles as an aspect of diagnostic practice and case formulation, regardless of professional discipline. The chapters of this book cover the major groupings of mental disorder as well as related areas that are important parts of psychological practice, such as sexual dysfunctions, sleep-wake disorders, and relationship problems and maltreatment. The authors of this book are leading global experts in each area, many of whom were integrally involved in developing the respective sections of the ICD-11. Authors describe the overarching logic for the classificatory arrangement and the elements of a psychological approach to the set of disorders discussed in each chapter, including psychological models for conceptualizing their symptoms and recommendations for psychological assessment. The chapters also discuss presentations and symptom patterns for each major group of disorders, specifiers and subtypes, the threshold between normal variation and disorder, differential diagnoses, co-occurring disorders, developmental course, cultural and contextual considerations, and gender-related features. A Psychological Approach to Diagnosis is the first comprehensive training resource on WHO&’s ICD-11 classification of mental, behavioural and neurodevelopmental disorders. It provides practicing psychologists and other mental health professionals, primary care clinicians, educators, and trainees with essential tools for the competent practice of diagnosis using the ICD-11 as a framework.
