to success and offers unique yet universal advice about how to be a more effective communicator in any situation. Not many White House Press Secretaries capture the nation&’s interest the way Jen Psaki did. Refreshingly candid and clear, Psaki quickly became known for her ability to break through the noise and successfully deliver her message. In her highly anticipated book, Psaki shares her journey to the Briefing Room and beyond, taking readers along the campaign trail, to the State Department, and inside the White House under two Presidents. With her signature wit, Psaki writes about reporting to bosses from the hot-tempered Rahm Emanuel to the coolly intellectual Barack Obama to the surprisingly tenderhearted John Kerry. And Psaki&’s work doesn&’t end at the office. She is the mother of two young children and shares her stories about the journey of communicating as a parent: During one bedtime briefing, her young daughter asked the question, &“Why do wars start?&”, which Jen carefully explained and then got a follow up: &“Have you ever seen a unicorn?&” In Say More, Psaki explains her straightforward approach to communication, walking readers through difficult conversations as well as moments where humor saves the day—whether it is with preschoolers, partners, or presidents. She addresses the best ways to give and receive feedback, how to connect with your audience, how to listen actively, and much more. By Naomi Cahn, June Carbone, Nancy Levit. 2024
A stirring, comprehensive look at the state of women in the workforce—why women&’s progress has stalled, how our economy fosters…
unproductive competition, and how we can fix the system that holds women back.In an era of supposed great equality, women are still falling behind in the workplace. Even with more women in the workforce than in decades past, wage gaps continue to increase. It is the most educated women who have fallen the furthest behind. Blue-collar women hold the most insecure and badly paid jobs in our economy. And even as we celebrate high-profile representation—women on the board of Fortune 500 companies and our first female vice president—women have limited recourse when they experience harassment and discrimination. Fair Shake: Women and the Fight to Build a Just Economy explains that the system that governs our economy—a winner-take-all economy—is the root cause of these myriad problems. The WTA economy self-selects for aggressive, cutthroat business tactics, which creates a feedback loop that sidelines women. The authors, three legal scholars, call this feedback loop &“the triple bind&”: if women don&’t compete on the same terms as men, they lose; if women do compete on the same terms as men, they&’re punished more harshly for their sharp elbows or actual misdeeds; and when women see that they can&’t win on the same terms as men, they take themselves out of the game (if they haven&’t been pushed out already). With odds like these stacked against them, it&’s no wonder women feel like, no matter how hard they work, they can&’t get ahead. Fair Shake is not a &“fix the woman&” book; it&’s a &“fix the system&” book. It not only diagnoses the problem of what's wrong with the modern economy, but shows how, with awareness and collective action, we can build a truly just economy for all.Surviving the Daily Grind: Bartleby's Guide to Work (Economist Books)
By Philip Coggan. 2023
One of today's pre-eminent financial journalists, and the Bartleby columnist for the Economist, reveals strategies and tips for surviving—and making…
the most out of—the work week. We spend a lot of our time at work and would be depressed with nothing to do. But when it gets to Monday, many of us are already longing for the weekend and the prospect of escape. How did work become so tedious and stressful? And is there anything we can do to make it better? Based on his popular Economist Bartleby column, Philip Coggan rewrites the rules of work to help us survive the daily grind. Ranging widely, he encourages us to cut through mindless jargon, pointless bureaucracy and endless meetings to find a new, more creative—and less frustrating—ways to get by and get things done at work. Incisive, original, and endlessly droll, this is the guide for beleaguered underlings and harried higher-ups alike. As Rousseau might have said: "Man was born free, but is everywhere stuck in a meeting." If you've ever thought there must be a better way, this is the book for you.Allison Fallon&’s Write Your Story provides a simple framework that will help readers capture, in writing, the depth of life…
events and, in turn, to make sense of their lives.Once you understand yourself and your life, you will live with more purpose and confidence. We&’ve all spent seasons reacting to the world around us, as though the world were telling a story and we were simply the audience, bystanders watching it all happen. The result: a life of regret and a feeling that we missed our purpose. Author Allison Fallon has led thousands of people just like you to find greater meaning by helping them write their story. She&’s witnessed the phenomenon of a person stepping back, analyzing their life, and realizing what they&’re good at and what they are not, the types of people who hurt them and those who help, and the things that provide satisfaction and what leaves them empty. And in all this, they find their purpose. They find their story. When you know your story, you know who you are and why you matter. You understand the many ways you can help others, and you develop a resilience over pain that can make you unstoppable. Allison&’s simple formula will help you process your life and get your whole story down—in only five pages! This isn&’t a formula to teach you to write a book (although the exercises may lead to that), but it will help you understand yourself, your story, and your purpose. We will never know who we are until we know our story. And we will never know our story until we take time to write it down. So let&’s begin.Forgiveness, Empathy, Compassion, and Kindness—these four fundamental human values are the key to unlocking great unity and humanity. In It&’s…
Time to Give a FECK, Chaz Ebert takes the reader through a heartfelt journey of how the four FECK Principles have prevailed through the most adverse circumstances and united strangers in the name of love. Read on to discover the stories and science as to how the elevation of our personal humanity is key to keeping humanity as a whole united. None of us has to go it alone. Since her husband&’s, Roger Ebert&’s, death on April 4, 2013, it has been Chaz Ebert&’s fervent desire for things such as forgiveness, empathy, compassion, and kindness—the FECK Principles—to spread in such a viral way that they become a natural part of our lives. A next step to the work Chaz and Roger began together, It&’s Time to Give a FECK is a call for the elevation of unity among humanity and a movement to transform empathy into action by choosing to become a part of the conversation surrounding the philosophical principles that matter for the betterment of our local and global societies. Good can come from the most frightening of circumstances and positive strides in human behavior can be made from even the most horrifying experiences. And transformations made within these times have the potential to be equally, if not even more, powerful if sustained. In It&’s Time to Give a FECK, Chaz Ebert takes readers on an awakening journey of how the FECK Principles have prevailed through the most adverse circumstances, uniting strangers in the name of love. Where do we go from here? What can we do to prove to one another that we really are in this together? What contributions can we each make in the name of forgiveness, empathy, compassion, and kindness? If you care about changing the way things are and bringing more love—for life itself, for yourself, and for others—into your life, this book will give you the stories and strategies that move you into action and allow you to &“Give a FECK&” in any way, big or small, that fills your heart and the hearts of others.Mind Magic: The Neuroscience of Manifestation and How It Changes Everything
By James R. Doty. 2024
A deep exploration of the neuroscience behind manifestation, with a six-part plan for realizing your dreamsFor decades the practice of manifestation…
has been widely dismissed as self-involved, materialistic pseudoscience. But as neuroscientist and recognized compassion leader Dr. James Doty reveals, manifestation introduces us to different possibilities, and it lays the groundwork for a kinder, better world. Doty grounds us in the practices that change our brain structures: attention, meditation, visualization, and compassion. This mind magic allows us to move through the world in ways that help us see clearly—reclaiming our agency, realizing our dreams, and reaching out to help others along the path. Where previous works about manifestation have focused narrowly on outward success and individual benefit, Mind Magic delivers an openhearted call to make manifestation part of a deeper contribution to healing the problems we face today. But What Will People Say?: Navigating Mental Health, Identity, Love, and Family Between Cultures
By Sahaj Kaur Kohli. 2024
&“This wonderful book is a compass, a blueprint, a mirror, and a friend. Kohli gives language to what many of…
us feel but can&’t yet articulate.&”—Erika L. Sánchez, New York Times bestselling author of I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter &“Loving, culturally informed, and holistic... [Kohli] compassionately shares her own story, and guides readers through the nuances and pain of assimilation, individuation, and mental health. How I wish I had this book back when I was trying to figure it all out for myself!&” —Ramani Durvasula, PhD, author of It&’s Not YouA deeply personal, paradigm-shifting book rethinking traditional therapy and self-care, creating much-needed space for those left out of the narrativeWriter and therapist Sahaj Kaur Kohli grew up knowing exactly what it means to straddle multiple cultures at once. Like many children of immigrants, she has often found herself plagued by questions: Can I establish my own values and embrace where I come from? Is prioritizing my mental health really rejecting my culture? How do I set boundaries and care for myself when family and community mean everything? Even after becoming a therapist herself, she saw those same gaps in the mental health world, leading her to wonder, like so many children of immigrants: what about us?While conversations around mental health are becoming increasingly open, our models remain largely Eurocentric and focused on individuality. Sahaj has sought to challenge these long-held models, using deep personal reflection, therapy, community building, and a whole lot of trial and error, eventually navigating her own way to understanding and acceptance. Here, she shows us how to get there, all the while reminding us that personal healing is inextricably connected to collective healing. But What Will People Say? elegantly weaves together personal narrative, anecdotal analysis, and comprehensive research. Sahaj offers advice and tools for everything from navigating generational trauma, guilt, and boundaries, to breaking down stigmas around therapy and celebrating cultural duality. Democratizing and decolonizing the way we think about mental health and self-help, Sahaj&’s incredible work is nothing short of a revolution. The Way of the Champion: Pain, Persistence, and the Path Forward
By Paul Rabil. 2024
&“Accessible and practical, Rabil&’s book will appeal to anyone seeking not only to understand what it takes to succeed, but…
also to understand the courage, discipline, and grace it takes to become a champion. . .Wise, inspired reading.&” — KirkusFrom lacrosse legend Paul Rabil, lessons on becoming a true champion— in sports, business, and lifeLong before Paul Rabil had become lacrosses's most acclaimed player, the sport's first million-dollar man, and the cofounder of the Premier Lacrosse League, he always strove for greatness. The problem was he lacked a manual for how to achieve it— so, he set out to create one himself. He talked to Bill Belichick about how to prepare, Steph Curry about how to practice, Sue Bird about how to develop resilience, and Mark Cuban about how to build a career with longevity. From the wisdom of these and other legends, and through his own—often painful—trial and error, he forged himself into a true champion. And in doing so, he wrote the manual he always wanted. The Way of The Champion is the synthesis of everything Rabil learned on his path to becoming one of the greatest lacrosse players of all time. But this is not merely a sports book. It is a guide to embodying a champion's mindset—in sports, in business, and in relationships.According to Paul Rabil, &“No one is born to be a champion. It can only be earned— through equal parts philosophy, execution, and sheer determination. I've won and lost championships, business deals, and relationships. I've learned that our best moments come after we've faced our most devestating defeats— when we choose to rise with unwavering resolve. That's the way of the champion."You Only Die Once: How to Make It to the End with No Regrets

By David Misselbrook. 2024

accessible way. the sources and rules of international law on the one hand, and the responsibility for violating international law on the other. In the sphere of law-making, the theory of obligations allows for a more precise and considered formulation of international obligations. It has the potential to enable subjects of international law to behave more rationally, allowing deeper reflection on whether to take on obligations and how to properly perform them. This book proposes a new approach to the issue of the proper operation of international law, with the theory of obligations at its heart. Linking the institutions and concepts of international law into a rational whole, the book offers an analysis of the operation of international law and the behaviour of its subjects to develop a framework for ensuring the ultimate effectiveness of international law. Analysing sources of law including treaties and common law, alongside the resolutions of international organisations, this book demonstrates the practical application of the subject with reference to the jurisprudence of international courts and other bodies. By Eduardo G Pereira, Thomas L Muinzer, Patrick R Baker. 2024
The UN Sustainable Development Goals are an ambitious agenda for environmental sustainability, economic development, and social transformation. The SDGs include…
targets for governments, in partnership with private industry and communities, to improve access to affordable and reliable energy, reduce inequality, protect natural resources, and invest in transparent legal institutions and resilient infrastructure. Although transitioning energy systems towards a low-carbon future is a core aspect of the SDGs, the International Energy Agency anticipates that oil and gas will remain a significant component of the global energy mix for some time. Host Government Instruments are tools which governments use to grant oil and gas companies permission to develop state-owned resources. In addition to bringing substantial resources into governments, these HGIs often also include environmental commitments as well as commitments to local hiring, stakeholder engagement, and investment in economic development programmes. The different structures of HGIs and their precise terms and conditions are crucial determinants of the sustainability of oil and gas operations conducted thereunder. This book addresses how governments can use HGIs to advance the SDGs. Part I introduces the SDGs and the legal institutions and governance related to HGIs, including in relation to international energy development, international environmental treaties, the Paris Agreement, and human rights regimes. Part II examines specific provisions within HGIs and regulatory systems which relate to the oil and gas sector and SDGs. It provides case studies to illustrate approaches to HGIs and to identify opportunities for host governments and international oil and gas companies to advance the SDGs. The book concludes with a summary of recommendations regarding how host governments, in partnership with the oil and gas industry, can use HGIs to advance economic development and sustainability goals, and advances potential insights towards development of new and renewable resources.Step-by-step quilting instructions and personal stories to inspire both seasoned pros and new quilters alike.America's quilter, Jenny Doan, has always…
