Planetary Health - Laws, Policies and Science on the 'One Health' Approach

By Giovanni Antonelli, Fabrizio Penna, Eeshan Chaturvedi, Antonio Cilento. 2025

Laws and statutes, Medicine, Science and technology, Law and crime
Synthetic audio, Automated braille

This book offers a multidisciplinary and in-depth analysis of the One Health approach. The holistic One Health vision, a healthcare…

model based on the integration of various disciplines, is both ancient and current. It is based on the recognition that human health, animal health and ecosystem health are inextricably linked. Cognizant of the need for multidisciplinary research to address complex health challenges at the national and international level, the book combines legal, public policy and medical perspectives on the One Health approach, exploring e.g. the role of biodiversity, human rights, trade agreements, indigenous knowledge, and climate change mitigation and adaptation. One Health is officially recognized by the European Commission and by a host of international organizations as a relevant strategy for actors in all sectors that benefit from collaboration between disciplines (doctors, veterinarians, lawyers, environmentalists, economists, sociologists etc.). One Health is an ideal approach to achieving global health, as it addresses the needs of the most vulnerable populations based on the intimate relationship between their own health, that of their animals, and that of the environment in which they live, considering the wide spectrum of determinants that emerge from this relationship. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to academics, professionals, and students of all disciplines who engage with the One Health approach.

This volume critically examines how the integration of evidence-based research within police governance reshapes accountability, decision-making, and policy development. Focusing…

on the transition of a well-established police research unit from the Metropolitan Police Service to the London Police and Crime Commissioner&’s office in 2014, the book explores the broader implications of this move for data-driven oversight and police practice. Bringing together contributions from experts directly involved in this transition, the chapters combine original research, case studies, and applied analysis to demonstrate how evidence informs policing at both strategic and operational levels. The book introduces the concept of "evidence-based oversight," offering a new framework for understanding the evolving role of research in shaping police governance and accountability structures. With insights for PCC staff, police professionals, policymakers, and scholars, this volume provides a critical perspective on how empirical research can enhance policing practices, drive reform, and strengthen oversight mechanisms within criminal justice systems.

Learning from Victims’ Family Narratives: The Impact of Offline and Online Harm in Cases of Intimate Partner Homicide (Routledge Studies in Crime and Society)

Offering a new perspective on intimate partner abuse and homicide, this book recognises the families of victims as legitimate agents…

of knowledge in terms of the harm experienced by their family members, and considers how this harm is extended to the families themselves.Examining harm from both an offline and online point of view, the book explains the multipurpose roles of offline and online harm and how these roles do not occur in isolation in terms of the victims’ and families’ abusive experiences. In doing so, it demonstrates the range of harm experienced in the context of intimate partner abuse and homicide, and outlines the overlapping nature of offline and online harm without prioritising one form of harm over the other; instead, considering the harm experienced as a continuum.Providing theoretical and empirical contributions that are largely absent from existing victimology and harm literature, Learning from Victims’ Family Narratives: The Impact of Offline and Online Harm in Cases of Intimate Partner Homicide will be of interest to scholars, researchers, students, and practitioners exploring the modern conceptualisation of harm and its impact on individuals beyond the victim and perpetrator

This book offers an analysis of how organized crime operates in Spain and the security apparatus designed to contain it.Organized…

crime is currently one of the most serious security threats facing democratic societies. Despite its intense presence and the responses that states have articulated in recent decades, little attention has been paid to the measurement of the effectiveness of the means adopted to combat it. Thus, this volume delves into this issue and performs an analysis of the police dimension of the response to organized crime in Spain. Firstly, this volume describes the international phenomenon of organized crime and its evolution in Spain, and continues by analyzing the profile and the characteristics of the different police forces and their resources and capabilities. This book then discusses the consequences of the measures at international level, European Union level, and local level, in relation to other police forces. Finally, the volume addresses the legal and public policy efforts that Spanish Law Enforcement Agencies have made in supervising or regulating their own police forces, which is necessary to carry out a detailed analysis of the consequences on the presence and strength of organized crime in the structures, strategies and decisions that Spain adopted over the last decades. As a result, this book builds on and updates the previous work by international scholars and proposes an interesting methodology that can contribute to the advancement of security studies. This book will be of interest to students of organized crime, criminology, Spanish politics and security studies. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Human-narrated audio

Janel Campbell was 11 years old when her mother was murdered. After 60 years of banishment from family conversation and…

memory, Janel gives the backdrop of her mother's life, from the farm in southeast Idaho to her brutal murder in King County, Washington on March 8, 1961. "Mary was nicknamed 'Mary Sunshine' by her sisters because every morning she would run to all the windows and pull back the curtains to let the warmth and light of the morning sun pour into the house." Mary was a high-spirited Irish girl, a devout Mormon, a compassionate Christian, and the mother of six children, executed by members of her church. She was found by Janel's 12-year-old brother, bludgeoned and shot in the head, their seven-month-old baby brother left abandoned on the day bed in the dining room. The Murder of Mary Sunshine is a heartbreaking story of a mother gone too soon, overshadowed by the larger than life vitality, love and wit of Mary Sunshine. Strong language. Violence

This book offers an avenue for understanding the parameters, scope, meanings, and impacts of environmental protest. Focusing on ecodefense, it…

explores the significance of the communiqué (the written explanation of the reasons for an act of ecodefense), comparing the communiqué to written texts in Conceptual art. It presents and seeks to evaluate the following analogy: act of ecodefense : communiqué :: work of conceptual art : written declaration/statement. By considering the communiqué in this light, this book helps us better comprehend the rationales for “radical environmentalism” undertaken for the purposes of reducing environmental harms, natural resource exploitation, and animal abuse.

Today, policing in the United States is facing a crisis of legitimacy and calls for reform. This Element examines this…

crisis and describes the adverse effects of problematic police behavior on community members, police officers, and public safety. A critical analysis of past reform efforts is offered, including why they have had limited success in changing police operations, police culture, or styles of policing. The central thesis of this Element is that most police reforms have failed because we continue to use the wrong metrics to evaluate police performance. Cities have yet to systematically measure what matters to the public, namely how people are treated by the police. Hence, this Element proposes a new system of accountability using data from body-worn cameras and contact surveys to measure and incentivize procedural justice. Translating evidence into real organizational change should improve street-level policing, enhance police legitimacy, and improve public safety.

It examines the use of tropes of crime and detection in the representation of historical atrocity in both explicit crime fiction and in literary fiction that relies on some of crime fiction&’s signature techniques. Crime Fiction and the Holocaust asks why patterns of detection have become a favoured method of fictional engagement with the Holocaust, considers the ethical and textual problematics of fictional encounters with real-world suffering, and delineates crime fiction&’s formal and thematic contributions to the broader project of Holocaust fiction.

A central focus of the US Military is the Human Weapon System (HWS) and the optimization of this weapon system.…

Over the past decade, the Department of Defence has invested in programs termed Human Performance Optimization (HPO) programs. Human performance for the human weapon system is much different than the civilian athlete. Therefore, the human weapon system's rehabilitation and performance training requirements are different and must be considered. This book demonstrates the following to strength coaches and practitioners: Why to view the HWS as a multi-faceted system that requires a more inclusive program than needed by athletes. Provide updated methodology to create a strength and conditioning program specifically for the HWS populations. Introduce and define advanced strength and conditioning methodologies SC professionals use within the US Military and law enforcement performance programs.

Transgender Sex Work in Sri Lanka: The Politics of Nachchi Sex Workers (Palgrave Advances in Sex Work Studies)

"Transgender sex workers&” is a scarcely explored area in academic discourses, garnering widespread interest amongst gender and sexuality scholars around…

the world. This book explores the narratives and experiences of Nachchi sex workers in contemporary Sri Lanka; a local term for a community assigned male at birth but who choose to live as women with a preference for male partners. It explores their lived experiences and stories through unique interviews, critically examining the historical and post-colonial (and post-war) discourses originating from the Sri Lankan state and civil society. It challenges the hegemonic, neo-liberal narratives that tend to homogenise and simplify their subjectivities. It also dissects the realm of &‘politics,&’ particularly subaltern politics and how this colonial population is excluded from the hierarchy of power. This book takes a decolonial approach to the historical knowledge production on Nachchi sex worker subjectivities by unearthing important, yet suppressed verbal histories and narrations of living community members. The author also reflects on her journey, transitioning from a researcher and academic to a full-time politician, a transformation that shapes her evolving perspectives on politics throughout the writing of the book.

The effectiveness of the interview techniques described are demonstrated in a wide range of investigative contexts. Ultimately, this book aims to increase the likelihood that victims of abuse, exploitation, trafficking and violence have a voice in the justice system and reduce the risk of secondary victimization. It is ideal for criminal justice practitioners and those interested in fulfilling the UN's Sustainable Development Goal #16, &“Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels".

This book analyses the nature, causes, logic, and culture of prison victimisation in an English young offender institution for young…

men aged 18-21 years old. Drawing on ethnographic and qualitative research, this book offers a comprehensive analysis of the gendered, situational, individual, and moral components of prison victimisation. It explores how wider technological, economic, policy, political, and cultural changes have altered the texture and structure of prison life and prison violence, and with what consequences. Ultimately, the book argues that high levels of prison violence are not inevitable. Rather, the prevention of prison violence requires a just, lawful, humane, and hopeful environment, and failing to create such is tragically life-changing for young prisoners.

This thought-provoking book examines gang history in the region encompassing West Texas, Southern New Mexico, and Northern Chihuahua, Mexico. Known…

as the El Paso–Juárez borderland region, the area contains more than three million people spanning 130 miles from east to west. From the badlands—the historically notorious eastern Valle de Juárez—to the Puerto Palomas port of entry at Columbus, New Mexico, this area has become more militarized and politicized than ever before. Mike Tapia examines this region by exploring a century of historical developments through a criminological lens and by studying the diverse subcultures on both sides of the law.Tapia looks extensively at the role of history and geography on criminal subculture formation in the binational urban setting of El Paso–Juárez, demonstrating the region&’s unique context for criminogenic processes. He provides a poignant case study of Homeland Security and the apparent lack of drug-war spillover in communities on the US-Mexico border.

Cybersicherheit in kritischen Infrastrukturen: Ein spieltheoretischer Zugang
