By Hugh C. McDonald. 2013
Reprinted Edition"When I first brought the President's head into my telescopic sight, he was leaning forward at an appreciable angle. …
My crosshairs were exactly on the back of his skull. . . ."With these chilling words the man who fired the fatal shot that killed President John F. Kennedy revealed his role in the assassination to the law-enforcement officer who had hunted him for nearly a decade. In this classic exposé, veteran cop Hugh C. McDonald offers a gripping firsthand account of his personal journey into the dark heart of an unthinkable conspiracy--to bring to light these and other shocking revelations: The astonishing truth about the shooter on the Grassy Knoll. How security lapses allowed an armed assassin easy access to Dealey Plaza. The fallacy of the "Single Bullet" theory. Who fired the bullets that killed JFK, who fired the bullets that didn't. Through the dramatic perspective of an eyewitness to history, Appointment in Dallas provides essential insights into the who, why, and how of the JFK murder, finally answering the questions that have consumed the American public for decades.Rene Girard, Law, Literature, and Cinema: The Legal Drama of the Scapegoat
By Eric M. Wilson. 2024
This book is the first monograph to critically evaluate the work of the literary scholar René Girard from the perspectives…
of Law and Literature and Law and Film Studies, two of the most multidisciplinary branches of critical legal theory. The central thesis is that Girard’s theory of the scapegoat mechanism provides a wholly new and original means of re-conceptualizing the nature of judicial modernity, which is the belief that modern Law constitutes an internally coherent and exclusively secular form of rationality. The book argues that it is the archaic scapegoat mechanism – the reconciliation of the community through the direction of unified violence against a single victim – that actually works best in explaining all of the outstanding issues of Law and Literature in both of its sub-forms: law-as-literature (the analysis of legal language and practice exemplified by literacy texts) and law-in-literature (the exploration of issues in legaltheory through the fictitious form of the novel). The book will provide readers with: (i) a useful introduction to the most important elements of the work of René Girard; (ii) a greater awareness of the ‘hidden’ nature of legal culture and reasoning within a post-secular age; and (iii) a new understanding of the ‘subversive’ (or ‘enlightening‘) nature of some of the most iconic works on Law in both Literature and Cinema, media which by their nature allow for the expression of truths repressed by formal legal discourse.Ultra-Processed People: Why We Can't Stop Eating Food That Isn't Food
By Chris Van Tulleken. 2023
THE #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • LONGLISTED FOR THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE FOR NONFICTION • The bestselling and eye-opening investigation into the science,…
economics, history and impact of ultra-processed food. With a new Afterword by the author.Named a Best Book of the Year by NPR • The Economist • The Times • The New Yorker • Smithsonian • Daily Mail • The Guardian • Financial Times • and more! It's not you, it's the food. How much of our daily caloric intake comes from ingesting substances that, technically speaking, do not meet traditional definitions of &“food&”? Chances are, if you&’re eating something that came wrapped in plastic and contains a funky ingredient you don&’t have in your kitchen, it's most likely—almost definitely—ultra-processed food, or UPF. More than the principal obstacle to &“eating right,&” UPF has been linked to metabolic disease, depression, inflammation, anxiety, and cancer, while the production, distribution, and disposal of UPF and related products globally is known to cause devastating environmental damage. At the same time, UPF represents the dominant, nigh-unavoidable food culture for millions upon millions of eaters.Medical doctor and broadcaster Chris van Tulleken has spent his career trying to reframe the conversation around eating right, balancing the hard (and sometimes shocking) facts about what we're putting into our bodies with empathy for the natural desire to keep eating what we like, have time for, and can afford. As he argues in this book, we are all participants in an experiment we didn't consent to, one to determine how to get us to buy as much ultra-processed food as possible. It&’s not as simple as stumbling across the right diet trend, finding time to meal plan, or avoiding over-indulging in sugar, fat, or carbs or any other culprit. Nor is it a matter of individual will. It&’s about learning to live in &“the third age of eating&”—defined by the overwhelming abundance of ultra-processed eating options—and arming yourself with the simple and not-so-simple facts that will help you make the choices that are right for you.Knee Ability Zero
