Neo-Victorian Young Adult Narratives
By Sarah E. Maier. 2024
Neo-Victorian Young Adult Narratives examines the neo-Victorian themes and motifs currently appearing in young adult fiction—specifically addressing the themes of authorship,…
sexuality, and criminality in the context of the Victorian age in British and American cultures. This book explicates the complicated relationship between the Victorian past and the turn to Victorian modes of thought on literature, history, and morality. Additionally, Sarah E. Maier aims to determine if the appeal of neo-Victorian young adult fiction rests in or resists nostalgia, parody, and revision. Given the overwhelming prevalence of the Victorian in the young adult genres of biofiction, juvenile writings, gothic, sensation, mystery, and crime fiction, there is much to investigate in terms of the friction between the past and the present.Wicked lovely (Wicked Lovely Ser.)

the 21st century where it expresses the horrors of unseen and unstoppable disease and the foreboding and anxiety that accompany viral outbreaks and wider epidemics. Here the vampire gives physical form to the contagion and associated anxieties around the perceived causes and spread of disease, where it can take on many forms from animal to pestilential particulate matter, creeping shadows and even malignant weather systems. If blood is life, it is the body of the vampire that is death. This timely study looks at how and why the vampire continues to fulfil this function and posits that the true patient zero in the 21st century is no longer the dangerous, ancient, outsider from the East but is the undying monster that is Western culture itself. The Seminar
By Reuven Bryer. 2012
‘The Seminar’ is a fiction novel narrated by a cynical out of work aspiring actress recalling her mysterious epoch mesmerizing…
journey, all of which happens in one spectacular weekend. Every turn she takes, even outside of the seminar room, becomes more surreal than the last. She meets a physically and financially broken down man who somehow intrigues her. His past seminar experiences help guide her through the conceptual complexities and the jargon of the seminar but unusual powers he displays confound her and unravel with spiraling twists. It is of little wonder why the three hundred and fifty people would attend a free weekend seminar titled ‘50 Passageways To Riches’ in an era of global recessions, depressions, down turned economies, high unemployment, and world hunger. There is a dichotomy though where people still have the dreams and the urges to become successful entrepreneurs when the global mindset has been instilled with such low confidence. ‘The Seminar’ provides far more than just fifty passageways to riches. Mentors, gurus, seminar leaders, provocative and prolific teachers present themselves throughout the entire weekend providing insight that not only she witnesses, but the reader may also get what is commonly found in a seminar experience. That would be what addresses the positive elicited changes in the essence of the psyche, the consciousness, or perhaps self-perception, all of which are capable of transforming even the unemployed layman into a successful entrepreneur. Anyone who has never experienced attending a seminar on any form of personal achievement, which can cost, and be worth, thousands of dollars, can get a good feel of one here. Anyone who has experienced such a seminar will find this one quite unique and very special. The author has been attending seminars since the 1960’s on a wide spectrum of subjects, many of which he covers in the ‘Passageways to Riches,’ while telling a unique mysterious love story within, ‘The Seminar’.Haunting in Chinese-Australian Writing
By Xiao Xiong. 2023
This book examines haunting in terms of trauma, languaging, and the supernatural in works by Chinese Australian writers born in…
Australia, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore. It goes beyond the conventional focus on identity issues in the analysis of diasporic writing, considering how the memory of past trauma is triggered by abusive systems of power in the present. The author unpacks how trauma also brings past violence to haunt the present. This book considers how different Chinese diasporic communities present a dynamic and multiple state through partial erasure between different Chinese subcultures and other cultures.Showing the supernatural as a social and cultural product, this book elucidates how haunting as the supernatural refers to the coexistence of, and the competition between, different cultures and powers. It takes a wide-ranging view of different diasporic communities under the banner ‘Chinese’, a term that refers not only to Chinese nationals in terms of citizenship, but also to the Chinese diaspora in terms of ancestry, and Chinese culture more generally. In analysing haunting in texts, the author positions Chinese culture as in a constant state of flux. It is relevant to literary scholars and students with interests in Australian literature, Chinese and Southeast Asian migration writing, and those with an interest in the Gothic and postcolonial traditions.Tempting Little Thief

By Lucy Cogan, Michelle O’Connell. 2022
This book explores how the writers, poets, thinkers, historians, scientists, dilettantes and frauds of the long-nineteenth century addressed the “limit…
cases” regarding human existence that medicine continuously uncovered as it stretched the boundaries of knowledge. These cases cast troubling and distorted shadows on the culture, throwing into relief the values, vested interests, and power relations regarding the construction of embodied life and consciousness that underpinned the understanding of what it was to be alive in the long nineteenth century. Ranging over a period from the mid-eighteenth century through to the first decade of the twentieth century—an era that has been called the ‘Age of Science’—the essays collected here consider the cultural ripple effects of those previously unimaginable revolutions in science and medicine on humanity’s understanding of being.Rightfully mine

By Sladja Blazan. 2021
This volume is a study of human entanglements with Nature as seen through the mode of haunting. As an interruption…
of the present by the past, haunting can express contemporary anxieties concerning our involvement in the transformation of natural environments and their ecosystems, and our complicity in their collapse. It can also express a much-needed sense of continuity and relationality. The complexity of the question—who and what gets to be called human with respect to the nonhuman—is reflected in these collected chapters, which, in their analysis of cinematic and literary representations of sentient Nature within the traditional gothic trope of haunting, bring together history, race, postcolonialism, and feminism with ecocriticism and media studies. Given the growing demand for narratives expressing our troubled relationship with Nature, it is imperative to analyze this contested ground.Strong and Sexy: A fun, feel-good Christmas romance (Sky High Air)

By Baron Ludwig von Reizenstein. 2003
One of the most scandalous books published in America in that time."Reizenstein's peculiar vision of New Orleans is worth resurrecting…
precisely because it crossed the boundaries of acceptable taste in nineteenth-century German America and squatted firmly on the other side... This work makes us realize how limited our notions were of what could be conceived by a fertile American imagination in the middle of the nineteenth century."—from the Introduction by Steven RowanA lost classic of America's neglected German-language literary tradition, The Mysteries of New Orleans by Baron Ludwig von Reizenstein first appeared as a serial in the Louisiana Staats-Zeitung, a New Orleans German-language newspaper, between 1854 and 1855. Inspired by the gothic "urban mysteries" serialized in France and Germany during this period, Reizenstein crafted a daring occult novel that stages a frontal assault on the ethos of the antebellum South. His plot imagines the coming of a bloody, retributive justice at the hands of Hiram the Freemason—a nightmarish, 200-year-old, proto-Nietzschean superman—for the sin of slavery. Heralded by the birth of a black messiah, the son of a mulatto prostitute and a decadent German aristocrat, this coming revolution is depicted in frankly apocalyptic terms.Yet, Reizenstein was equally concerned with setting and characters, from the mundane to the fantastic. The book is saturated with the atmosphere of nineteenth-century New Orleans, the amorous exploits of its main characters uncannily resembling those of New Orleans' leading citizens. Also of note is the author's progressively matter-of-fact portrait of the lesbian romance between his novel's only sympathetic characters, Claudine and Orleana. This edition marks the first time that The Mysteries of New Orleans has been translated into English and proves that 150 years later, this vast, strange, and important novel remains as compelling as ever.Embryology and the Rise of the Gothic Novel (Palgrave Studies in Literature, Science and Medicine)
By Diana Pérez Edelman. 2021
This book argues that embryology and the reproductive sciences played a key role in the rise of the Gothic novel…
in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Diana Pérez Edelman dissects Horace Walpole’s use of embryological concepts in the development of his Gothic imagination and provides an overview of the conflict between preformation and epigenesis in the scientific community. The book then explores the ways in which Gothic literature can be read as epigenetic in its focus on internally sourced modes of identity, monstrosity, and endless narration. The chapters analyze Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto; Ann Radcliffe’s A Sicilian Romance, The Italian, and The Mysteries of Udolpho; Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; Charles Robert Maturin’s Melmoth the Wanderer; and James Hogg’s Confessions of a Justified Sinner, arguing that these touchstones of the Gothic register why the Gothic emerged at that time and why it continues today: the mysteries of reproduction remain unsolved.Last Mile: Vicious Cycle 3 (Vicious Cycle #3)
