The Dictionary People: The Unsung Heroes Who Created the Oxford English Dictionary
By Sarah Ogilvie. 2023
The New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice • A history and celebration of the many far-flung volunteers who helped define…
the English language, word by word.&“Enthralling and exuberant, Sarah Ogilvie tells the surprising story of the making of the OED. Philologists, fantasists, crackpots, criminals, career spinsters, suffragists, and Australians: here is a wonder book for word lovers.&” —Jeanette Winterson, author of Oranges Are Not the Only FruitThe Oxford English Dictionary is one of mankind&’s greatest achievements, and yet, curiously, its creators are almost never considered. Who were the people behind this unprecedented book? As Sarah Ogilvie reveals, they include three murderers, a collector of pornography, the daughter of Karl Marx, a president of Yale, a radical suffragette, a vicar who was later found dead in the cupboard of his chapel, an inventor of the first American subway, a female anti-slavery activist in Philadelphia . . . and thousands of others. Of deep transgenerational and broad appeal, a thrilling literary detective story that, for the first time, unravels the mystery of the endlessly fascinating contributors the world over who, for over seventy years, helped to codify the way we read and write and speak. It was the greatest crowdsourcing endeavor in human history, the Wikipedia of its time. The Dictionary People is a celebration of words, language, and people, whose eccentricities and obsessions, triumphs, and failures enriched the English language. The Palgrave International Handbook of Basic Income (Exploring the Basic Income Guarantee)
By Malcolm Torry. 2023
This handbook brings together scholars from various disciplines and from around the world to examine the history, characteristics, effects, viability…
and implementation of basic income. The first edition of this book contributed a comprehensive treatment of multiple aspects of the basic income debate. New chapters are devoted to recent research on the history of basic income; the development and peacemaking potential of basic income in conflict zones; municipal experiments in the United States; requirements for pilot projects and experiments; and the public health implications of basic income. Existing chapters on the implementation of basic income have also been substantially updated to take account of new research on microsimulation, land value tax, local currencies, and blockchain technology and cryptocurrency, along with new material on the increasing use of opinion polls and the difficulties related to that. New political and ethical perspectives on the role of trade unions and their increasing engagement with the basic income debate are also introduced, while the section on pilot projects and experiments has been updated to cover recent political developments. Fully updated to reflect new global developments in the basic income debate, this handbook will be of interest to researchers, teachers and research-oriented policymakers in a range of fields. The Economic Impact of Sports Facilities, Franchises, and Events: Contributions in Honor of Robert Baade (Sports Economics, Management and Policy #23)
By Victor A. Matheson, Robert Baumann. 2023
This edited volume discusses the economic impact of sports facilities, franchises, and events on local economies. Written in honor of…
Robert Baade upon his retirement, the book provides a state-of-the-art of current research on the economic impact of sports, and recognizes the seminal contributions that Dr. Baade has made to this topic. The analysis of the economic impact of spectator sports is a vital public policy topic as $75 billion has been spent on stadium construction since 1990 in the US alone, with nearly $35 billion of this coming from taxpayer subsidies. True public cost of sports franchises is much higher than this as this figure excludes facilities outside the Big 5 domestic leagues (like NASCAR track, NCAA facilities, minor league baseball, and the Canadian Football Leagues), public subsidies for major events like the Super Bowl or Olympic Games, and excludes sports subsidies outside of direct stadium construction subsidies.Including contributions from many of the most notable researchers studying the economic impact of sports, topics include impacts of stadiums and franchises on local economies, labor markets, and tax collections, the effect of sports franchises on property values, and changes in the public and academic discourse on sports subsidies over time. This volume will be of interest to researchers and students of sports economics, management, public policy, and public finance.Brief Lives: Charlotte Brontë (Brief Lives)

By Melisa Klimaszewski. 2009
Author of the first detective novel in English, Wilkie Collins was one of the most popular authors in Victorian England.…
In this illuminating biography, Melisa Klimaszewski situates the writer within his own milieu and demonstrates how his work sparks new understandings of Victorian life and letters. A close friend and collaborator of Charles Dickens, Collins secured his own fame with sensational novels that feature intricate legal plots, mistaken identities, and complex crimes. Boldly challenging the mores of Victorian society by maintaining two families and shunning the institution of marriage, Collins was also one of the most unconventional public figures of his day. His life story, succinctly told in this elegant biography, promises to instruct and to entertain.Shirley Hazzard: A Writing Life
By Brigitta Olubas. 2007
The first biography of Shirley Hazzard, the author of The Transit of Venus and a writer of “shocking wisdom” and…
“intellectual thrill” (The New Yorker).Shirley Hazzard: A Writing Life tells the extraordinary story of a great modern novelist. Brigitta Olubas, Hazzard’s authorized biographer, has drawn, with great subtlety and understanding, on her fiction; on an extensive archive of letters, diaries, and notebooks; and on the memories of surviving friends and colleagues to create this resonant portrait of an exceptional woman. This biography explores the distinctive times of Hazzard’s life, from her youth and middle age to her widowhood and years of decline, and traces the complex and intricate processes of self-fashioning that lay beneath Hazzard’s formidable, beguiling presence. Olubas shows us the places of Hazzard’s life, of which she wrote with characteristic lyricism, accompanied by rare photographs from Hazzard’s collection and elsewhere.Hazzard was the last of a generation of self-taught writers, devotees of a great literary tradition, and her depth of perception and expressive gifts have earned her iconic status. Olubas has brought her brilliantly alive, enhancing and deepening our understanding of the singular woman who created some of the most enduring fiction of the past sixty years. As Dwight Garner wrote in The New York Times, “Hazzard’s stories feel timeless because she understands, as she writes in one of them: ‘We are human beings, not rational ones.’” Here, in Shirley Hazzard, is the story of a remarkable human being.Software Engineering Approaches to Enable Digital Transformation Technologies
By Amit Jain, Sanjay Misra, Chitresh Banerjee, Manju Kaushik. 2024
Software Engineering Approaches to Enable Digital Transformation Technologies features contributions reflecting ideas and research in enabling digital transformation technologies through…
software engineering. To date, multiple, different approaches have been adopted to develop software solutions for a variety of different problems. Of all the available approaches, the main approaches are level-oriented, data flow-oriented, data structure-oriented, and object-oriented design approaches. The other focus of the book is digital transformation, which can be defined as the adoption of digital technology to improve efficiency, value, and innovation Digitalization is more than just putting additional technological systems and services in place. Rather than improving conventional methods, a true digital transformation initiative includes radically rethinking company structures and procedures. There are four types of digital transformation: business process, business model, domain, and cultural and organizational. Companies are being challenged to develop new business models that consider and harness digitalization. From the standpoint of software engineering, digital transformation alters how software is built. Current trends include the development of mobile applications, cloud applications, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Emerging trends are the development of digital twins, robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented reality, and additive manufacturing. This book examines the challenges that arise due to digitization in society and presents plausible solutions that could be applied to counter these challenges and convert them into opportunities. These solutions may further be improvised and worked out for the software companies from the technological perspective, organizational perspective, and management perspective. The Real Hergé: The Inspiration Behind Tintin

Eliza Poe, his mother, died before he turned three, but she haunted him ever after. The loss of Elmira Royster Shelton, his first and last love, devastated him and inspired much of his poetry. Though he died at age forty, Poe left behind works of great originality and vision that Fallen Angel explores with depth and feeling.Developing Property Rights Theory: Based on China’s Practice
