(1832–1888) is, of course, best known as the author of Little Women (1868). But she was also a noted essayist who wrote on a wide range of subjects, including her father&’s failed utopian commune, the benefits of an unmarried life, and her experience as a young woman sent to work in service to alleviate her family&’s poverty. Her first literary success was a contemporary close-up account of the American Civil War, brilliantly depicted in Hospital Sketches, which was drawn from her own experience of serving as an army nurse near the nation&’s capital. As with her famous novel, Alcott writes these essays with clear observation, unforgettable scenes, and one of the sharpest wits in American literature.Blending gentle satire with reportage and emotive autobiography, Alcott&’s exquisite essays are as exceptional as the novels she is known for. Published together for the first time, this delightful selection shows us another side to one of our most celebrated writers.Shooter's Bible Guide to Firearms Assembly, Disassembly, and Cleaning, Vol 2

castellana. Mistral.
By Claudia Piñeiro. 2023
New Projects Made with Shot Cottons and Striped Fabrics
By Kaffe Fassett, Liza Prior Lucy. 2013
Inspired by textiles from around the world, twenty-four quilting projects big & small with easy-to-follow instructions for all skill levels.…
In Kaffe Fassett Quilts Shots and Stripes, quilt master Kaffe Fassett and coauthor Liza Prior Lucy present twenty-four projects—small and large, beginner and advanced—made with iridescent solid-colored cotton fabrics (called shot cottons) and woven striped cotton fabrics, all photographed in and around his weekend home on England&’s southern coast. Inspired by worldwide travels and a plethora of ethnic textiles, including Amish quilts in America, Japanese indigo patched work clothes, and African weavings, the projects featured include full-size bed quilts as well as smaller pieces that can be completed more quickly, such as throws, wall hangings, table runners, and pillows. With Shots and Stripes, Fassett answers the current call for quilts that make bold graphic statements but are not necessarily as time-consuming as some of the work for which he has been previously celebrated.&“Fassett . . . and Lucy, owner of Glorious Color and Fassett&’s frequent collaborator, have birthed a book of startling beauty. Beyond producing drooling glances, their book journeys determinedly yet joyfully through twenty-four projects, well conceived and with clear instructions.&” —Publishers WeeklyGreat Northern Railway Gallery: A Pictorial Journey Through Time (Railway Gallery Ser.)
By Michael A. Vanns. 2019
&“A simply fascinating and impressively informative illustrated history&” of the British steam railway by the author of The Leicester Gap…
(Midwest Book Review). The Great Northern Railway was one of 120 companies that ran trains in Britain during the Victorian and Edwardian period. Formed in 1846, it traded independently for seventy-six years until absorbed into the London & North Eastern Railway on 1 January 1923. Operating a network of nearly 700 route miles it ran trains between King&’s Cross, London and York, into the Eastern Counties and the East Midlands, the West Riding of Yorkshire, into Lancashire and even south of the Thames. It developed distinctive characteristics, both in the way it managed its affairs and in the appearance of its trains, stations, signals and signalboxes. Numerous photographs were taken, particularly from the 1890s onwards, by dedicated amateurs attracted to the lineside by the sight of speeding steam locomotives in apple green livery, hauling polished teak carriages. Goods trains and the endless procession of coal trains were not such popular photographic subjects, but by searching out these and images of staff, stations and signalboxes, this book aims to capture something of the spirit of a once-great organization in the heyday of Britain&’s steam railways. &“With the welcome increase in the pre-Grouping scene engendered by projects such as the Hatton&’s &‘Genesis&’ coaches, books such as this will find a new audience, which is no bad thing.&” —Railway Modeller &“Vanns certainly presents a splendid collection of period images displaying numerous aspects of the railway&’s operations.&” —Best of BritishHow to Sew: Embellishments

By Ralph Frammolino, Jason Felch. 2011
A &“thrilling, well-researched&” account of years of scandal at the prestigious Getty Museum (Ulrich Boser, author of The Gardner Heist).…
In recent years, several of America&’s leading art museums have voluntarily given up their finest pieces of classical art to the governments of Italy and Greece. Why would they be moved to such unheard-of generosity? The answer lies at the Getty, one of the world&’s richest and most troubled museums, and scandalous revelations that it had been buying looted antiquities for decades. Drawing on a trove of confidential museum records and candid interviews, these two journalists give us a fly-on-the-wall account of the inner workings of a world-class museum, and tell a story of outlandish characters and bad behavior that could come straight from the pages of a thriller. &“In an authoritative account, two reporters who led a Los Angeles Times investigation reveal the details of the Getty Museum&’s illicit purchases, from smugglers and fences, of looted Greek and Roman antiquities. . . . The authors offer an excellent recap of the museum&’s misdeeds, brimming with tasty details of the scandal that motivated several of America&’s leading art museums to voluntarily return to Italy and Greece some 100 classical antiquities worth more than half a billion dollars.&” —Publishers Weekly, starred review &“An astonishing and penetrating look into a veiled world where beauty and art are in constant competition with greed and hypocrisy.
