Geoffrey Pullum offers a stimulating introduction to the many ways in which linguistics, as the scientific study of language, matters. Introducing Polity’s Why It Matters series: In these short and lively books, world-leading thinkers make the case for the importance of their subjects and aim to inspire a new generation of students.Lo personal es político: Textos del feminismo de los setenta
By Marta Lamas, Ana Sofía Rodríguez Everaert. 2023
-Ana Sofía Rodríguez EveraertHow Men Can Help: A Guide to Undoing Harm and Being a Better Ally

Each chapter concludes with explicit practical implications and/or actionable recommendations for organizational changemaking. The…
book compares the juvenile justice systems of the USA, the UK and China with India to identify causes of juvenile delinquency and the measures to curb it. It traces the origin of juvenile justice in India and its evolution through landmark judgments. The book critically analyses the Nirbhaya Rape Case of 2012, analyzing the age of criminal responsibility for juveniles and the need for new juvenile justice laws which lead to the passing of the Juvenile Justice (Care of Protection of Children) Act, 2015. The book studies international conventions upholding the rights of children i.e., UNCRC, Beijing Rules, Riyadh Guidelines, etc. and the legal framework for child protection in India and its relevance to juvenile justice. This book will be useful for undergraduate and postgraduate law students, advocates, criminal law practitioners, officers/staff of the correction homes, Judges of the Juvenile Justice Board, and research scholars. This volume is the first collection of Martha Albertson Fineman’s most important and influential work. Feminist legal theorist Martha Albertson…
Fineman has spent decades pushing the boundaries of law, questioning and reconceptualizing legal and social definitions of family, dependency, vulnerability, and state responsibility. The pieces collected in this book trace the arc of Fineman’s scholarship, from gender equality; to the role of the family as a social institution; to dependency; to autonomy; to the legal subject and vulnerability theory. This book reflects a lifetime of radical reimagining of the relationship between the state, individuals, families, and other social institutions that is just as relevant today, if not more so. In this book, Fineman offers a foundation for the achievement of true social justice, through the centering of our shared human vulnerability and dependency, grounded in the recognition of the ontological body and its material needs. Arranged in sections, and introduced by leading scholars in the field, these pieces ask us to re-examine our legally enshrined commitment to formal equality and the “mythological” autonomous independent legal subject; recognizing instead that we must call for an active and responsive state that meaningfully provides resilience through its social institutions. This collection demonstrates an evolution of heretical thought that has always pressed for a deeper understanding of the foundations of law and society, offering a model for other scholars on how to keep pressing through the hard work of thinking and rethinking the conceptual basics of language, law, society, and justice. This book will appeal to academics, policymakers, lawyers, activists, and students in law and politics theory with interests in law and society, human dependency and vulnerability, state responsibility, and feminism and the family; as well as others who have applied Fineman’s vulnerability theory to issues in the fields of bioethics, artificial intelligence, and policing, to name just a few.The Collaborative Body in Qualitative Research: Becoming Bodyography
By Davina Kirkpatrick, Sarah Helps, Bodies Collective, Ryan Bittinger, Claudia Canella, Jess Erb, Mark Huhnen, Alys Mendus. 2023
The Collaborative Body in Qualitative Research challenges normative philosophies that have frequently neglected the body’s place in research and then…
illustrates how the body is essential for all meaning making. By ‘voicing the body’, the first part of this rebellious book problematizes how the body is used/assessed, yet often silenced in academic writing. This book then fluidly moves to celebrating the body through discussing taboo topics like sex/sexuality in friendship, underwear (knickers), ageing, and death, as well as how a non-binary body moves in a heteronormative world. Through the lens of Bodyography, this book does research differently – illuminating how the body flourishes, excites knowledge, and is complicated when placed on a ‘screen’. This book celebrates a collaborative and arts-based approach. This book is a dialogue between The Bodies Collective, with dialogic resonance sections between each chapter and art pieces throughout. This book will encourage all scholars to do research differently. Anyone with a thirst to challenge normative practices in academia and who wants research to be inspiring and playful will fall in love with this book. The book explores the academic characteristics, career development, and impacts of “foreignness” of Chinese overseas returnees in research universities. It…
provides valuable insights into the international mobility of academics and the challenges and opportunities that returnee scholars face in terms of research, teaching, international exchange, income, academic promotion, job satisfaction, and career mobility in their academic careers. Using first-hand large-scale survey data, the author presents quantitative analyses of the international mobility of Chinese academics at the individual level. She evaluates the impact of overseas experience on academic career development, and further proposes practical policy suggestions to attract and retain returnee talent in academia in China. The book’s findings have important implications for policy-makers, university administrators, and academics who seek to address the challenges and opportunities of international academic careers and promote the internationalization of research universities in China and beyond.Gender and Popular Visual Culture in India: ‘Benevolent’ Sexism and Disguised Discrimination
By Francis Philip Barclay, Kaifia Ancer Laskar. 2024
Perhaps, male-mindedness seems to have adapted to changing-contemporary circumstances to become more covert and conspiratorial. Sexist suggestions—through objectification and substantiated…
subordination—for instance, may have been explicit in Indian media a decade earlier. But in the contemporary times of online social media and vociferous feminism, such openness of unfairness against women in the media will, more often than not, be met with strife and unpalatable backlash—fearing which blatant prejudice is prudently steered clear of. It is, hence, understandable that patriarchy, to sustain itself as a culture, has adapted to become more benevolent in an increasingly hostile environment. To identify such sly and stealthy sexism embedded in media content, one may need a reconfigured grasp of contemporary feminist issues and an altered nuance for isolation and identification of discriminatory depictions. This book exposes redefined and hidden sexism that predominates the popular visual culture of India—particularly investigating mass and new media representations that are a prime part of and have a domineering effect on the ensemble of popular visual culture—and characterises contemporary feminist movements. It binds a collection of contemporary Indian case studies of sexism and feminism encompassing communication media such as print, cinema, television, Web series and social media. There is a lack of book titles that study media sexism in the present times, and the proposed book aims to explore an unexplored area that is of social and scholarly importance. This book highlights the duality of media platforms: while media is a critical tool associated with fourth-wave feminism, they still remain to be a deterrent to the development of women engendering inherent and age-old patriarchal notions. This book will be an eye-opener to the general readers about benevolent sexism and train them to identify sexism hidden in seemingly pro-women media representations.Personal Narrative Performance and Storytelling: A Method of Composition from Action to Text

By Corneliu Bjola, Markus Kornprobst. 2024
This book analyses how digital transformation disrupts established patterns of world politics, moving International Relations (IR) increasingly towards Digital International…
Relations. This volume examines technological, agential and ordering processes that explain this fundamental change. The contributors trace how digital disruption changes the international world we live in, ranging from security to economics, from human rights advocacy to deep fakes, and from diplomacy to international law. The book makes two sets of contributions. First, it shows that the ongoing digital revolution profoundly changes every major dimension of international politics. Second, focusing on the interplay of technology, agency and order, it provides a framework for explaining these changes. The book also provides a map for adjusting the study of international politics to studying International Relations, making a case for upgrading, augmenting and rewiring the discipline. Theory follows practice in International Relations, but if the discipline wants to be able to meaningfully analyse the present and come up with plausible scenarios for the future, it must not lag too far behind major transformations of the world that it studies. This book facilitates that theoretical journey. This book will be of much interest to students of cyber-politics, politics and technology, and International Relations.Television’s Streaming Wars (Routledge Advances in Television Studies)

By Meagan Call-Cummings, Giovanni P. Dazzo, Melissa Hauber-Özer. 2024
The Routledge International Handbook of Critical Participatory Inquiry in Transnational Research Contexts illustrates how research guided by the emancipatory epistemology…
of critical participatory inquiry (CPI) can support social change in transnational contexts, which are inherently laden with unequal power dynamics and colonial structures. It builds on prior volumes in participatory action research, community-based participatory research, and decolonizing methodologies. This edited volume offers cases from across the Global South and Global North and from diverse disciplines including human rights, migration, education, health, youth studies, and development to demonstrate how CPI can fulfill its democratizing and decolonizing potential. Written primarily by new and emerging scholars, practitioners, and community leaders, these cases go on to illustrate how a critical participatory approach to transnational research can enhance the strength of research processes and findings, create more equitable and just experiences for those who participate as co-researchers, and facilitate social change. Providing a valuable framework for transnational CPI and a wealth of examples, it will be an invaluable read for undergraduate and graduate students of Development Studies, Healthcare disciplines, Education, and qualitative research. It will also be of interest to researchers, professionals, community leaders, and even funders and policymakers who want to work toward greater equity and social justice in transnational research contexts.Ready to Teach: The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde

In this landmark project, Professor Zhang and Professor Moratto piece together the history of how conference interpreting developed as a…
profession in China after the reform and opening up of the late 1970s. While paying tribute to the earliest interpreters who interpreted for the first-generation CPC leaders including Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and Deng Xiaoping, they track key cooperative projects between Chinese ministries and both the United Nations and European Union, as well as China’s domestic efforts, which developed into today’s formal programs at major universities. An essential resource for scholars and students of conference interpreting in China, alongside its sister volume Conference Interpreting in China: Practice, Training and Research. How to Become a Successful College Student: The Tools, Habits, and Skills Needed to Foster College Readiness
