Safe All Along: Trading Our Fears and Anxieties for God's Unshakable Peace
By Katie Davis Majors. 2023
Leave behind your anxious thoughts and embrace a steady confidence that you are never beyond the reach of God&’s loving…
hand, from the bestselling author of Kisses from Katie.&“Safe All Along will help you break the cycle of what-if worries and experience the peace of God in new ways.&”—Jennie Allen, New York Times bestselling author of Get Out of Your HeadAs a missionary, wife, and mom of fifteen, Katie Davis Majors knows how hard it can be to receive God&’s peace instead of giving in to fear and worry. Family emergencies, unexpected life-shifting events, and the busy rhythms of family life have at times left her reeling. In Safe All Along, Katie offers reflections and stories from around the world and from her own kitchen table about her personal journey toward living from a place of surrendered trust. Every chapter leads us deep into Scripture as we learn what it looks like to break free from anxiety and take hold of peace.Rich in biblical explorations of lament and praise, forgiveness and hope, service and surrender, Safe All Along asks, What practical choices can we make to experience the peace Jesus promised amid disappointment and uncertainty? How can we live with joy and confidence even when we&’re pulled into the rapids of life? Our God has promised us a peace that transcends all understanding. And we can accept His promise, trusting that in Him we are safe all along.A snappy book of simple conversational swaps that reveals how to talk so everyone will listen Words matter. They can…
inform, soothe, sting, reverberate, and leave scars. And the wrong words can turn off—literally—the listener, transforming what should be an exchange of information, feelings, and ideas into dead air time. So many of our dialogues with others are like scripts—we say the same things, ask the same questions, react in the same ways, and get the same (predictably bad) responses. Our verbal interactions with others often illustrate that famous definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different response. With quick-take visuals and a smart sense of how human beings really talk to each other, What to Say to Get Your Way can turn dead air time into something productive. It's a simple, effective toolbox that will train anyone to say what they mean effectively and powerfully. The Routledge International Handbook of Boredom (Routledge International Handbooks)
By Maik Bieleke, Wanja Wolff, Corinna S. Martarelli. 2024
This comprehensive text is a unique handbook dedicated to research on boredom. The book brings together leading contributors from across…
three continents and numerous fields to provide an interdisciplinary exploration of boredom, its theoretical underpinnings, its experiential properties, and the applied contexts in which it occurs.Boredom is often viewed as a mental state with little utility, though recent research suggests that it can be a powerful motivator of human behavior that shapes our actions in many ways. The book examines boredom from a range of perspectives and is comprised of three parts. Part I delves into the theoretical approaches to boredom, presenting methods for its measurement, explaining when and why boredom occurs, and scrutinizing the impact it has on our behavior. Part II focuses on the psychological and neural properties of boredom and its associations with a multitude of mental and interpersonal processes, such as self-control, mind-wandering, flow, and aggression. Part III presents boredom in practical contexts like school and work, and sheds light on its role for health-related behaviors, psychosocial well-being, and aesthetic experiences. The book concludes by summarizing the state of boredom research, identifying promising areas for future research, and providing directions for how research on boredom can be advanced. As the authoritative book on boredom, this handbook is an essential resource for students and researchers of psychology, sociology, education, sport science, and computer science.Political Humility: The Limits of Knowledge in Our Partisan Political Climate
By Blake Roeber. 2024
This book aims to change the way we think about politics, talk about politics, and vote.It does this in two…
ways. First, it shows it’s impossible for a Republican, Democrat, or voter in any political party to possess a significant level of knowledge of facts that would help their party secure or maintain political power. It calls this knowledge “political knowledge” and shows how unfeasible it is for anyone to have it. Second, it explains how we might best be politically engaged, given that we have virtually no political knowledge. To argue that it is impossible for any person to possess a significant amount of political knowledge, the book depends on two empirically verified facts. The first is that we have virtually no means of acquiring political information except by believing what other people say. The second is that, when people start talking about politics, they become highly unreliable. They’re very likely to say false things when voicing political opinions because they employ a belief‑forming process that psychologists call “identity protective cognition.” This is a type of reasoning aimed, not at truth, but at preserving one’s membership in some identity‑defining group. In combination, these two observations cast serious doubt on all of our political beliefs. As the book explains, however, the proper response to this doubt is not to simply avoid politics. Rather the best response is a kind of humble but real engagement with politics that constantly manifests one’s awareness that one is, at best, making educated guesses rather than speaking and acting from knowledge.Peter L. Berger on Religion provides an overview and critical assessment of the work of one of the most influential…
sociologists of the 20th century.Situating Berger’s writings on religion and secularisation in the broader framework of social constructionism, the book argues that neither he nor the research influenced by him consistently followed the constructionist paradigm. This assessment is informed by a close examination of The Sacred Canopy (1967), in particular. The volume also offers a Berger‑inspired constructionist framework for the study of religion. This book is an excellent resource for students and researchers interested in the intersection of religion and social theory.Get Quiet: 7 Simple Paths to the Truth of Who You Are

By Bernhard Kittel, Stefan Traub. 2024
This book develops an empirically informed normative theory of need-based justice, summarizing core findings of the DFG research group FOR2104…
“Need-based Justice and Distributive Procedures”. In eleven chapters scholars from the fields of economics, political science, philosophy, psychology, and sociology cover the identification and rationale of needs, the recognition and legitimacy of needs, the dynamics and stability of procedures of distributions according to needs, and the consequences and sustainability of need-based distributions. These four areas are studied from the perspective of two mechanisms of need objectification, the social objectification by the discursive generation of mutual understanding (transparency) and the factual objectification by the transfer of decisions to uninvolved experts (expertise). The volume addresses academics in the fields of justice research, ethics, political theory, social choice and welfare, framing, individual and group decision making, inequality and redistribution, as well as advanced students in the contributing disciplines.Sell It Like Serhant: How to Sell More, Earn More, and Become the Ultimate Sales Machine

matter where you start out—from the bestselling author and cofounder of Axios and Politico.Jim VandeHei&’s high school guidance counselor laid it out clearly: VandeHei wasn&’t cut out for college. In 1990, you could find him proving the counselor&’s case emphatically, preferring beer to books and delivering pizzas to mapping out career plans. He attended a two-year school before smuggling himself into the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, where after a year he had racked up a 1.4 GPA and was on the verge of getting the boot.Everything changed when he discovered his passions: politics and journalism. VandeHei went on to cover the presidency and cofound two of the biggest modern news outlets, Politico and Axios, the media companies that upended and revolutionized journalism. He took notes every step of the way. And in Just the Good Stuff, his debut as a solo author, VandeHei writes the book he wishes someone had handed him when he was floundering—not a compendium of conventional wisdom but a real-world guide to achieving that other &“good stuff,&” health, wealth, happiness, all the blessings and exquisite pleasures we loosely group under that oft used but still under-appreciated rubric—success. By Gábor Betegh, Voula Tsouna. 2024
Concepts are basic features of rationality. Debates surrounding them have been central to the study of philosophy in the medieval…
and modern periods, as well as in the analytical and Continental traditions. This book studies ancient Greek approaches to the various notions of concept, exploring the early history of conceptual theory and its associated philosophical debates from the end of the archaic age to the end of antiquity. When and how did the notion of concept emerge and evolve, what questions were raised by ancient philosophers in the Greco-Roman tradition about concepts, and what were the theoretical presuppositions that made the emergence of a notion of concept possible? The volume furthers our own contemporary understanding of the nature of concepts, concept formation, and concept use. By John Sallis. 2024
This volume in the Collected Writings of John Sallis presents his lecture course on German Idealism, tracing its development from…
the reception of Kant through the works of Fichte and Schelling. With insightful interpretations of key texts, John Sallis demonstrates the enduring power of post-Kantian thought—especially with respect to freedom, the relation of subject to object, and the role of the imagination. He shows that what underlies the development of German Idealism is a concern with the question of system and the nature of philosophy itself. The book begins with a treatment of Kant's philosophy and its new beginning. It then discusses the initial reception of Kant's philosophy, showing how criticisms of Kant set the stage for the subsequent development of German Idealism. The central chapters focus on Fichte, first introducing his central philosophical project (the Wissenschaftslehre) and then carefully analyzing its implementation in the 1794 Grundlage. The final chapters treat Schelling's early and middle philosophy, including the 1800 System of Transcendental Idealism and his famous 1809 treatise on freedom.Beyond its insights into the thought of German Idealism, the book is distinctive for the clarity of Sallis's exposition, his attention to the implications for philosophy today, and the sense of wonder he evokes in his readers. Because of these features, the book will be of interest to general readers as well as specialists in German philosophy.Begetting: What Does It Mean to Create a Child?
By Mara van der Lugt. 2024
An investigation of what it means to have children—morally, philosophically and emotionally&“Do you want to have children?&” is a question…
we routinely ask each other. But what does it mean to create a child? Is this decision always justified? Does anyone really have the moral right to create another person? In Begetting, Mara van der Lugt attempts to fill in the moral background of procreation. Drawing on both philosophy and popular culture, van der Lugt does not provide a definitive answer on the morality of having a child; instead, she helps us find the right questions to ask. Most of the time, when we talk about whether to have children, what we are really talking about is whether we want to have children. Van der Lugt shows why this is not enough. To consider having children, she argues, is to interrogate our own responsibility and commitments, morally and philosophically and also personally. What does it mean to bring a new creature into the world, to decide to perform an act of creation? What does it mean to make the decision that life is worth living on behalf of a person who cannot be consulted? These questions are part of a conversation we should have started long ago. Van der Lugt does not ignore the problematic aspects of procreation—ethical, environmental and otherwise. But she also acknowledges the depth and complexity of the intensely human desire to have a child of our own blood and our own making.More-Than-Human Aesthetics: Venturing Beyond the Bifurcation of Nature (Dis-positions: Troubling Methods and Theory in STS)
