author of Wild FellIn 1913 all the musk plants in the world stopped smelling. Unable to resist the lure of this mystery, Bob Gilbert turns detective, determined to find the truth in the tale. Mixing history, memoir, science and nature writing, The Missing Musk takes the reader on a journey of discovery, uncovering the truth behind six mysteries and myths from across the natural world. From the darkest corners of Britain's churchyards to Scotland's Pentland Hills, Bob travels the length of the UK, seeking answers to questions that have intrigued him throughout his life. In search of the musk's long-lost fragrance, he discovers a possibly murderous story. Investigating the true origins of 'star jelly' leads to encounters with unexplained sightings and substances. Faced with the urban myth-like stories of mosquitoes thriving in the London Underground, Bob digs deeper.Motivated by the curious, unexplained phenomena found in wild places and on urban streets, Bob peers into microscopes, delves into horticultural archives and chases a glimpse of the strange 'water bear', finding that, when it comes to mysteries, the joy is found as much in the search as in the answer it leads you to . . .Between periods of revolution, state repression, and war across Central and Western Europe from the 1840s through the 1860s, German…
liberals practiced politics beyond the more well-defined realms of voluntary associations, state legislatures, and burgeoning political parties. Political Friendship approaches 19th century German history’s trajectory to unification through the lens of academics, journalists, and artists who formed close personal relationships with one another and with powerful state leaders. Michael Weaver argues that German liberals thought with their friends by demonstrating the previously neglected aspects of political friendship were central to German political culture. The political identities of the Turkish working class began a transformative journey that started during a period of industrialization following…
World War II and continued until the military interventions of 1960. Working Class Formation in Turkey addresses common, structural generalizations to recover the complex history of developing political, recreational, familial, residential, and work-related lives of Turkish workers. Drawing on a wide range of historical sources, this volume brings the concept of “everydayness” to the fore and uncovers the local contexts that fostered class solidarity, examines labor practices that fueled radicalism, and analyzes the shifting dynamics of industrial discipline that impacted working class identity and culture.By Stefanie Schüler-Springorum. 2024
This concise overview traces the Gender history of German-Jews from the early modern period to the present day and provides…
a unique perspective on both men and women as historical actors in the German lands. By adopting new perspectives on the German-Jewish experience, Stefanie Schüler-Springorum introduces and examines gender narratives and opportunities across a wide range of individual circumstances and during times of discrimination, persecution and deportation. While being directed against all Jews the effects of Nazi policy had remarkably different results, depending on gender, class, marital status, age and religious affiliation. The picture that emerges here of German Jewry in modern times is consequently more vibrant and nuanced.By Tsvetelin Stepanov, Osman Karatay. 2023
This book explores the widespread mass conversions to Christianity and Islam that took place in Europe and Asia in the ninth to…
eleventh centuries. Taking a comparative perspective, contributors explore the processes at work in these conversions. Focusing on Christianity and Islam, it contrasts religious conversion in the period with earlier conversions, including those of Manichaeism in central Asia; Buddhism in east Asia; and Judaism in Khazaria, exploring why conversions to Christianity and Islam led to centralized political structures.By Nancy Faass, Ricki Pollycove. 2010
For the first time in history, millions of women have the opportunity to grow old as vigorous, vitally engaged, and…
productive people. Advances in health care and medical knowledge now offer a solid foundation for those who want to reduce their health risks and improve their quality of life. Wise use of estrogen can lower a woman's risk of colon cancer, osteoporosis, hip fractures, heart disease, and dementia, yet fewer than 17 percent of American women for whom hormone supplements are appropriate actually take them. Bioidentical hormones are created from plant molecules identical to those found in the human body. These new hormones provide women with another resource to meet the needs of aging-saftey when used intelligently. The Pocket Idiot's Guide® to Bioidentical Hormones provides the evidence on what is safe and what is not and presents a wide range of options for supplementing hormones, within an easy-to-answer discussion of Hormone Replacement Therapy in general. Completely objective, the book answers all the questions and coverage includes: • The case for hormones-bioidentical or otherwise • The safety issue-which hormones work and which may be harmful • Bioidentical hormones-beneficial effects on the heart, bones, and brain • Creating an individualized health plan-which hormones, in what combination-how much and how oftenBy Scott R. This edited collection addresses concepts of value and its impact on economies and economic decision-making in Mesoamerica. It brings together…
various theoretical and methodological approaches to illuminate the little-studied topic of value in ancient economies. While scholars increasingly note that tangible objects found in the archaeological record could assume different values, depending on how they were used and circulated, less attention has been paid to how we might infer consensus (or lack of consensus) on how value was determined in past cultures so different from contemporary ones. These contributions show how multiple and conflicting understandings of what is important and meaningful coexist within any society even as moments of exchange create the impression of shared formulations of value. They consider divergences between shared understandings based on systems of beliefs and patterns of practice and the individual decisions of social actors. They also discuss how inequalities in social structures might inform our understanding of value, and how a multiplicity of values might encourage closer inspection of inequality in turn. The book brings together fifteen chapters focused on many parts of Mesoamerica, including Western Mexico, the Basin of Mexico, Veracruz, Oaxaca, and various parts of the Maya Lowlands, and range chronologically from the Classic period (250-900 CE) to the Spanish Conquest in the early 16th Century. It appeals to those working in archaeology, economic anthropology, economic history, and all those interested in how value can be understood in terms of contemporary cultural and political differences.Soothe your digestive system with 200+ meal plans and recipes The Complete Idiot's Guide® to Eating Well with IBS will…
