By J. K. Bowers, Paul Cheshire. 1983
First published in 1983. How had the situation developed in which agriculture had become such a creature of state protection,…
where public money supported prosperous landowners while poor farmers received practically nothing? Where the value of agricultural support exceeded net farm income, and vastly exceeded the level of support available to British Steel or British Rail? In answering these questions John Bowers and Paul Cheshire examined the real value of agricultural support in successive policy phases since the Second World War, and analysed the effects this support had on income distribution. Their thesis was that agricultural change, including the transfer of land from traditional farmers to institutions and corporations, was not the product of impersonal progress, but the direct result of agricultural support policies, resting on specious economic arguments. The authors’ analysis of this subject has inescapable relevance for the policymaker, for the taxpayer and consumer of foodstuffs, for the urban user of the British countryside and indeed for farmers and the farming lobby. Agriculture, the Countryside and Land Use will be an important book for all these groups and also for students of agriculture, geography and economics.Beef Cattle Science Handbook, Vol. 20

regenerating system, ordered enzyme sequences, etc. These volumes, besides giving some insight into basic technology (immobilisation procedures, etc.), also sum up the current know-how in this subject area and try to predict some future trends. The termimmobilized cells covers everything from dead cells with a single active enzyme species to cells proliferating on or within a three dimensional polymer matrix. The practical handling of these structures make them useful in various applications, e.g. large-scale production of biomolecules, biodegration, analysis, etc.Craniosynostosis (Routledge Revivals)

edge of researchand development provide a solid grasp of circuit breaker design and performance... and that's knowledge you can put to work immediately!arcuit Interruption surpasses other books in completeness and currency-includingcoverage of the sulfur hexafluoride puffer, the vacuum breaker, and the low-voltagemolded-case breakers, that are taking the place of many older types. In addition to thelatest theories and techniques, this major volume examines promising future trends.More than 400 clear illustrations help make the text easy to follow, and over 620 keyreferences point the way to the best places for continuing study.Today, the field of circuit interruption is so diverse that a thorough single source reallystands out. arcuit Interruption is that- source, the perfect reference for electrical, electronic, power, and design engineers; and researchers investigating circuit breaker design, interaction of breakers and power circuits, power transmission, power distribution, circuit interruption, electric contacts, and gaseous conduction. Moreover, this exceptionalbook serves as an excellent source for practicing power engineers as well as an invaluablesupplement to graduate-level engineering courses in circuit interruption, transmission, and distribution of power . . . and a supplement in professional seminars and society/association courses.Minute Eye Movement and Brain Stem Function (Routledge Revivals)

Winrock International. The authors of these papers are outstanding animal scientists, agribusiness leaders, and livestock producers who are expert in animal technology, animal management, and general fields relevant to animal agriculture. The Handbooks present advanced technology in a problem-oriented form readily accessible to livestock producers, operators of family farms, managers of agribusinesses, scholars, and students of animal agriculture. The Beef Cattle Science Handbook, the Dairy Science Handbook, the Sheep and Coat Handbook, and the Stud Managers' Handbook each include papers on such general topics as genetics and selection; general anatomy and physiology; reproduction; behavior and animal welfare; feeds and nutrition; pastures, ranges, and forests; health, diseases, and parasites; buildings, equipment, and environment; animal management; marketing and economics (including product processing, when relevant); farm and ranch business management and economics; computer use in animal enterprises; and production systems. The four Handbooks also contain papers specifically related to the type of animal considered.Hair Sheep Of Western Africa And The Americas: A Genetic Resource For The Tropics
By H. A. Fitzhugh. 1983
Perhaps less than 10 percent of the world's sheep have hair coats instead of wool fleeces, but as an animal…
resource, these sheep are important far out of proportion to their numbers. Hair coats provide an advantage in the face of the heat, humidity, and other stresses of the tropics. and tree seed oils as diesel fuel substitutes or extenders and as chemical feedstocks in both the industrialized and the developing world. This book represents the first attempt to bring together science, technology, and policy aspects of this topic in one volume. The authors examine the chemical, biological, and energy-related resources available in commercial and wild plant oilseeds; the status of chemical processing efforts and of engine tests using agricultural diesel fuels; the potential economic, environmental, and social impacts of more extensive oilseed utilization; and current legislation aimed at stimulating commercialization of strategic renewable agricultural resources.Hadean Earth
By T. Mark Harrison. 2020
This book consolidates the latest research on the Hadean Eon - the first 500 million years of Earth history -…
which has permitted hypotheses of early Earth evolution to be tested, including geophysical models that include the possibility of plate tectonic-like behavior. These new observations challenge the longstanding Hadean paradigm – based on no observational evidence - of a desiccated, lifeless, continent-free wasteland in which surface petrogenesis was largely due to extraterrestrial impacts. The eon was termed “Hadean” to reflect such a hellish environment. That view began to be challenged in 2001 as results of geochemical analyses of greater than 4 billion year old zircons from Australia emerged. These data were consistent with the zircons forming in a world much more similar to today than long thought and interpreted to indicate that sediment cycling was occurring in the presence of liquid water. This new view leaves open the possibility that life could have emerged shortly after Earth accretion. The epistemic limitations under which the old paradigm persisted are closely examined. The book is principally designed as a monograph but has the potential to be used as a text for advanced graduate courses on early Earth evolution.Changing U.s. Military Manpower Realities
