Elle prend alors conscience que cette coutume barbare a refoulé en elle son identité de femme. Sera-t-elle jamais capable d'aimer un homme ? Si son livre est un plaidoyer contre l'excision, Nura y décrit également son enfance heureuse en Somalie, et ses paysages somptueux, à une époque où la guerre civile n'avait pas encore obligé sa famille à fuir au Kenya. Puis c'est le déracinement et le choc culturel de son arrivée en Europe, où elle doit accepter les tâches les plus ingrates. Malgré les épreuves, Nura Abdi a toujours conservé cette détermination et cette joie de vivre qui lui permettent aujourd'hui d'entrevoir l'avenir avec optimisme.
