Observe Purim with a handmade megillah or a hamentash. Create models of the four sons for Passover, and fashion a…
scroll for Simchat Torah. This clearly diagrammed manual provides simple directions for creating these and fifteeen other origami projects to help observe Jewish holidays, both festive and solemn.Clearly detailed illustrations and captions explain all the steps for an entire year's worth of holiday projects--from Chanukah dreidels and a menorah with candles to Passover pyramids and an image of the Red Sea parting. Additional projects for weekly observances include sabbath candles and kiddush cup.Great for synagogues, schools and homes, this easy-to-follow guide offers beginning paperfolders a unique, fun-filled way to celebrate Jewish cultureBy Rona Gurkewitz, Bennett Arnstein, Lewis Simon. 1999
This newly revised and enlarged book offers paperfolders, model builders, and math students alike a stimulating journey into the world…
of three-dimensional geometric origami. Step-by-step instructions and clearly detailed diagrams explain how to create more than 35 different modular polyhedra. The modules, each made from a single piece of paper, have points and pockets, enabling origamists to build fascinating figures by inserting the tapered ends of each module into the pockets of the adjacent modules.Unavailable elsewhere, the models in this innovative book are diverse, ranging from relatively simple modular cube and stellated octahedron to more advanced two-piece modules, a gyroscope, and even a 14-sided cuboctahedron. Graded according to difficulty, these multifaceted marvels have a style and beauty all their own and will not only challenge devotees of the ancient Japanese art of paper folding, but will also prove useful in classroom demonstrations of geometric principles.By Ann V. Winterbotham. 1981
Stained glass windows have for centuries adorned spectacular churches, massive government buildings, and stately homes of the well-to-do. But during…
the Victorian era, stained glass was increasingly used as an integral part of the design of middle-class, single-family homes. This impressive volume is the largest collection of stained glass designs from actual windows. All of the nearly 400 designs can be characterized as traditional and domestic; they are copied from windows in residences and do not include any religious work. They are secular in motif and richly varied in design. As all designs are from actual windows, the practicality of their craft is assured. The development of popular stained glass in many ways parallels the larger art movements of the era. Victorian windows often have a double border -- the outer clear, the inner ruby red or, less commonly, blue. The geometric designs based on circles, squares, and triangles are pale tints of subtle colors: olive green, ochre, yellow, amber, pink, mauve, light blue. In many of these windows, the geometric borders are augmented by birds, flowers, berries, and leaves in dark, rich tones of red and green as the central illustration. As the Victorian era gave way to the Edwardian, one sees an increase of yellows and opaques accompanied by a wider range of textures and relief patterns. Victorian windows are usually all color, whereas the Edwardian approach emphasized brighter rooms and so used clear glass, making for a rich and sparkling play of contrasting textures. In late Victorian and Edwardian windows, hints of Art Nouveau curves and ovals soften earlier geometry. The influence of Art Deco revived the popularity of geometric designs in the 1920s and '30s. These recent works however, have a more accentuated diagonal, vertical, and horizontal style and make use of clear, bright colors. This stunning and comprehensive collection of popular stained glass designs will be invaluable to students of the craft, architectural historians, and many graphic artists as a rich and varied source of design and ornamentation that can be directly applied to the most modern graphic challenges. By accurately rendering hundreds of stained glass windows, graphic artist and designer Ann Winterbotham has saved for posterity many fine designs that will soon fall prey to the ravages of time or the wrecker's ball.By Anders S. Choosing Craftexplores the history and practice of American craft through the words of influential artists whose lives, work, and ideas…
have shaped the field. Editors Vicki Halper and Diane Douglas construct an anecdotal narrative that examines the post-World War II development of modern craft, which came of age alongside modernist painting and sculpture and was greatly influenced by them as well as by traditional and industrial practices. The anthology is organized according to four activities that ground a professional life in craft--inspiration, training, economics, and philosophy. Halper and Douglas mined a wide variety of sources for their material, including artists' published writings, letters, journal entries, exhibition statements, lecture notes, and oral histories. The detailed record they amassed reveals craft's dynamic relationships with painting, sculpture, design, industry, folk and ethnic traditions, hobby craft, and political and social movements. Collectively, these reflections form a social history of craft. Choosing Craftultimately offers artists' writings and recollections as vital and vivid data that deserve widespread study as a primary resource for those interested in the American art form.By Kyle Richards, Marcela Gutiérrez Bravo. 2015

Guilford County residents felt the brutal impact of the Civil War on both the homefront and the battlefield. From the…
plight of antislavery Quakers to the strength of women, the county was awash in political turmoil. Intriguing abolitionists, fire-breathing secessionists, peacemakers, valiant soldiers and carpetbaggers are some of the figures who contributed to the chaotic time. General Joseph E. Johnston's parole of the Army of Tennessee at Greensboro, as well as the birth of a free black community following the Confederate defeat, brought amazing changes. Local author and historian Carol Moore traces the romantic days in the lead-up to war, the horrors of war itself and the decades of aftermath that followed.By Emanuele Azzità. 2016

a Grinling Gibbons carving in a London church, David Esterly chose to dedicate his life to woodcarvingits physical rhythms, intricate beauty, and intellectual demands. Forty years later, he is the foremost practitioner of Gibbons’s forgotten technique, which revolutionized ornamental sculpture in the late 1600s with its spectacular cascades of flowers, fruits, and foliage. After a disastrous fire at Henry VIII’s Hampton Court Palace, Esterly was asked to replace the Gibbons masterpiece destroyed by the flames. It turned out to be the most challenging year in Esterly’s life, forcing him to question his abilities and delve deeply into what it means to make a thing well. Written with a philosopher’s intellect and a poet’s grace, The Lost Carving explores the connection between creativity and physical work and illuminates the passionate pursuit of a vocation that unites head and hand and heart. .
