from the biographical material of another person's life--particularly when that other person is also a writer. Meditating upon the recent, real-life conflict between poet Stephen Spender and novelist David Leavitt, Margulies has created two of the most vivid and moving fictional characters of his career: Ruth Steiner, an aging, highly regarded author who never wrote about her youthful affair with real-life poet Delmore Schwartz, and Debra Messing, a student of Steiner's who, after publishing a much-praised first short-story collection under Steiner's direction, follows up with a novel that draws upon the Schwartz affair.Seven Souls on a Cross
By Emil Toth. 2014
Paul Sentes builds a cross, places it in his front yard, hangs on the cross and begins the most inspirational,…
spiritual, dramatic and physically challenging undertaking of his life. Prompting Paul to the astounding act is his unwillingness to let his emotions control his life. He soulfully cries out to God for help and receives a recurring mystical vision of him on a cross. Vowing silence, while on the cross, protects him from the torments of his neighbors, visitors and the media. Paul's controversial act reverberates through his neighborhood, the church and ultimately the world. Thousands come to pray, to deposit crosses and articles on his lawn and ask for healing. Six souls, crippled by their emotions, become intimately involved with Paul, during his stay on the cross. They share their dreams, anxieties and fears with him. Day thirty, on the cross, Paul has an epiphany, changing his perspective, attitude and life. Five of the six souls also have transforming experiences. In his madness, the sixth suffering soul lashes out and stuns the world.Tropisms
By Maria Jolas, Nathalie Sarraute. 1963
Nathalie Sarraute's stunning debut--vignettes of "inner movements"--foreshadowed the rise of the nouveau roman. Hailed as a masterpiece by Jean Genet,…
Marguerite Duras, and Jean-Paul Sartre, Tropisms is considered one of the defining texts of the nouveau roman movement. Nathalie Sarraute has defined her work as the "movements that are hidden under the commonplace, harmless instances of our everyday lives." Like figures in a grainy photograph, Sarraute's characters are blurred and shadowy, while her narrative never develops beyond a stressed moment. Instead, Sarraute brilliantly finds and elaborates subtle details--when a relationship changes, when we fall slightly deeper into love, or when something innocent tilts to the smallest degree toward suspicion.Maps of the Imagination
By Peter Turchi. 2004
In Maps of the Imagination, Peter Turchi posits the idea that maps help people understand where they are in the…
world in the same way that literature, whether realistic or experimental, attempts to explain human realities. The author explores how writers and cartographers use many of the same devices for plotting and executing their work, making crucial decisions about what to include and what to leave out, in order to get from here to there, without excess baggage or a confusing surplus of information. Turchi traces the history of maps, from their initial decorative and religious purposes to their later instructional applications. He describes how maps rely on projections in order to portray a three-dimensional world on the two-dimensional flat surface of paper, which he then relates to what writers do in projecting a literary work from the imagination onto the page. The Abbey: A Story of Discovery

By Guillermo Cabrera Infante. 1995
By Johannes C.P. Schmid. 2021
Frames and Framing in Documentary Comics explores how graphic narratives reframe global crises while also interrogating practices of fact-finding. An analog print…
phenomenon in an era shaped by digitalization, documentary comics formulates a distinct counterapproach to conventional journalism. In what ways are ‘facts’ being presented and framed? What is documentary honesty in a world of fake news and post-truth politics? How can the stories of marginalized peoples and neglected crises be told? The author investigates documentary comics in its unique relationship to framing: graphic narratives are essentially shaped by a reciprocal relationship between the manifest frames on the page and the attention to the cognitive frames that they generate. To account for both the textuality of comics and its strategic use as rhetoric, the author combines theories of framing analysis and cognitive narratology with comics studies and its attention toward the medium’s visual frames.
