long years of playing bridesmaid to their northern nemesis.Arsenal on the Double is an intimate account of the most exciting season since the inception of the Premier League, seen through the experienced journalistic eyes of a lifelong Arsenal fan - one of the legions of loyal, hail-or-shine fanatics who follow their club over land and sea (and Leicester!). Any lifelong addict of the beautiful game will be able to relate to this roller-coaster ride of tribulation and ultimate triumph. The author takes us from the shock of discovering the debilitating cost cost of season-ticket renewals on the day of last year's FA Cup final disaster to the usual evangelical early-season euphoria. He traces the Arsenal's almost annual November inconsistency, which was transformed by a New Year's resolution to win - a resolution resulting from their Christmas-season encounters with card-happy referees.Go with the Gunners on an emotionally exhausting, but joyful journey, as they romp all the way back to another FA Cup final in Cardiff. Delight in the dramatic denouement of the Arsenal's third Double when Old Trafford becomes a Gooner's Theatre of Dreams and their record-breaking season reaches its ultimate climax on the enemy's turf.Arsenal All 4-1: A Guidebook to an Historic Season Straight from Highbury's Gooner Grapevine

By Mario Risoli. 2000
As a young striker with Third Division club Swansea Town in the ’60s, Giorgio Chinaglia stole milk bottles from the…
doorsteps of local terraced houses because he couldn’t afford breakfast. Nine years later, as Lazio’s star centre-forward, Chinaglia owned apartments in Rome, a villa, a tennis club and a boat. With an annual salary of £85,000, this son of a Cardiff restaurateur was one of the world’s highest-paid footballers. Arrivederci Swansea is the remarkable rags to riches tale of one of football's original 'bad boys'. Chinaglia was given a free transfer by Swansea in 1966 because the coaching staff considered him too lazy and disliked his attitude. Chinaglia returned to his native Italy to rebuild his ailing career. He joined Roman side Lazio in 1969. There, in the awesome Olympic Stadium, Chinaglia became the idol of the Lazio tifosi. In 1974, he finished as Seria A top scorer with 24 goals and helped Lazio to their first league title. He also played for Italy in the 1974 World Cup and, on being substituted, caused outrage by making gestures at the Italian bench before storming off the pitch. After Lazio he played alongside Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer at New York Cosmos. After retiring from playing, Chinaglia became a football pundit on Italian television and radio until his death from a heart attack on 1 April 2012.Arm-ball to Zooter: A Sideways Look at the Language of Cricket

By Colin Ward. 1996
All Quiet on the Hooligan Front is a compelling exploration into the changing face of football. Covering the years just…
prior to the Hillsborough disaster up to the present day, it shows how the mood of English football has changed dramatically since the era of hooliganism described in its predecessor, the hugely successful Steaming In. The book revolves around the author’s travels and gives a vivid portrayal of the fun that fans have when supporting their team. It looks at how football has changed now that the terraces have gone, and gives an insight into how members of the press often distort the truth about the game in order to sell more papers. The book emphasises the importance now assigned to marketing within football and, on a darker note, looks at the advent of the drugs culture amongst fans. All Quiet on the Hooligan Front chronicles all of the changes which have occurred in the game post-Hillsborough, and leaves it for the reader to decide whether these have been good or bad for the beautiful game.Alive and Kicking: A Story of Crime, Addiction and Redemption in Glasgow's Gangland
By David Bryce. 2005
From running with the infamous Calton Tongs to running Calton Athletic, David Bryce's life story is a remarkable account of…
crime, violence, alcoholism and drug addiction in Glasgow's gangland.A respected 'hard man', Bryce worked his way through most of HM's prisons in Scotland before an epiphany in 1977 made him realise that he was a hopeless alcoholic who needed help. A five-year battle followed, during which he sank into the abyss of heroin addiction before finally getting clean. In 1985, in an effort to help others who were struggling against substance abuse, Bryce set up Calton Athletic, a football team and social group made up solely of recovering drug addicts. Reformed gangster Jimmy Boyle was one of the first to have faith in Bryce and Calton Athletic, but the club eventually won widespread respect. Gordon Brown, then a young MP, was so impressed that he wrote an article for The Observer which led to a TV film starring Lenny Henry and Robbie Coltrane. In the '90s, Ewan McGregor, Irvine Welsh and the Trainspotting crew sought Bryce's advice and friendship during the making of the internationally acclaimed cult film, while Robbie Williams begged to switch nationality and play for Calton Atheltic in an 'England v. Scotland' celebrity charity match.Bryce's uncompromising belief that the only way to come off drugs is to go cold turkey and stay completely clean saw him clash with government agencies over the 'harm-reduction' policy of recent years. The club's statutory funding was withdrawn in 1998, but today Calton Athletic are still providing an invaluable lifeline while the 'official' drugs policy has become increasingly discredited.Alive and Kicking is an inspirational tale of survival and success against the odds.Alex Higgins: Eye of the Hurricane

By Alex Ferguson. 1992
Alex Ferguson, once king of Scottish football, gave up the easy life in Aberdeen to follow in the famous footsteps…
of Sir Matt Busby. Others had flickered and then faded in the shadow cast by the legendary Busby but Ferguson couldn’t resist the call. ‘Football is a strange obsession. Winning is a drug and when I got the invitation to manage Manchester United I simply could not resist,’ he says. For nearly six years he has chased the end of the rainbow and spent millions of pounds to bring the coveted championship to Old Trafford for the first time in 25 years. Now he feels it is time to tell the inside story of the best-supported club in Britain and his struggle to fulfil the title dream of thousands of supporters. He found the famous club in disarray and he admits he came close to the sack himself. ‘No manager is prepared for the job at Old Trafford. The legend is huge. It’s different from any other club with its traditions and expectations. It took me three or four years to understand the particular politics and demands. Only through success can a manager get control of his destiny.’Ferguson fought his battles and won the trophies which slowly but surely see him now established as a manager who has laid the old ghosts to rest and created a new vision. Winning the FA cup in 1990 bought him valuable time, and success in the European Cup-Winners’ Cup, beating Barcelona in a memorable final in Rotterdam, gave him the right platform for the most convincing championship challenge since the days of Busby. After seven years at Aberdeen, Ferguson wrote A Light in the North, an account of how he broke the Glasgow stranglehold on Scottish football. Now comes the sequel of how he conquered English football at the helm of their greatest club.THE ULTIMATE SURVIVAL GUIDE for anyone who thinks they'd survive the world's most hostile environments - or at least imagine…
