Break in Case of Emergency: A novel
By Jessica Winter. 2016

Perri, The New York Times"It's the superb insights and penetrating writing that make this book remarkable... An extraordinary debut." --The Guardian"Enthralling, sharply observed" --Marie Claire "Hilarious... The personal and workplace plots are woven together beautifully. Read, cringe, laugh, relate." --Lenny "In this cutting commentary on workplace toxicity and how its tendrils can strangle relationships, Winter uses humor to illuminate the state of modern work, family, and friendship." --Elle.com"Sassy, sarcastic and sleek, this is a wonderfully brash appraisal of how we live."--Colum McCannOne of Elle Magazine's 19 Summer Books That Everyone Will Be Talking AboutOne of Cosmo's Reads for JulyOne of Refinery29's Two New Books to Read in July by Brilliant Debut AuthorsAn irreverent and deeply moving comedy about friendship, fertility, and fighting for one's sanity in a toxic workplace.Jen has reached her early thirties and has all but abandoned a once-promising painting career when, spurred by the 2008 economic crisis, she takes a poorly defined job at a feminist nonprofit. The foundation's ostensible aim is to empower women, but staffers spend all their time devising acronyms for imaginary programs, ruthlessly undermining one another, and stroking the ego of their boss, the larger-than-life celebrity philanthropist Leora Infinitas. Jen's complicity in this passive-aggressive hellscape only intensifies her feelings of inferiority compared to her two best friends--one a wealthy attorney with a picture-perfect family, the other a passionately committed artist--as does Jen's apparent inability to have a baby, a source of existential panic that begins to affect her marriage and her already precarious status at the office. As Break in Case of Emergency unfolds, a fateful art exhibition, a surreal boondoggle adventure in Belize, and a devastating personal loss conspire to force Jen to reckon with some hard truths about herself and the people she loves most.Jessica Winter's ferociously intelligent debut novel is a wry satire of celebrity do-goodism as well as an exploration of the difficulty of navigating friendships as they shift to accommodate marriage and family, and the unspoken tensions that can strain even the strongest bonds. From the Hardcover edition. All the Conspirators
By Christopher Isherwood. 1928
Parents and children are still just as deadly but they are no longer invariably polite and restrained, and there are…
no longer (as Cyril Connolly once put it) "atrocities witnessed at tea in the drawing-room." Christopher Isherwood was only twenty-one when he began his first novel, All the Conspirators, in 1926; it was published in England two years later. In his introduction to the first American edition (published by New Directions in 1958), the author explained: "[All the Conspirators] records a minor engagement in what Shelley calls 'the great war between the old and young.'" In many ways this novel (like the classic Berlin Stories) is a "period piece" growing out of a particular historical situation--clashes between parents and children are still just as deadly but they are no longer invariably polite and restrained, and there are no longer (as Cyril Connolly once put it) "atrocities witnessed at tea in the drawing-room." But Isherwood's singular perceptions of the older generation holding on and the younger trying to wrench free are as valid today as they were half a century ago.Travesty
By John Hawkes. 1998
An exceptionally brilliant novel from "our most interesting writer" (Flannery O'Connor) Travesty is John Hawkes's most extreme vision of eroticism…
and comic terror. In the south of France, an elegant sports car is speeding through the night, bearing a man, his daughter, and his best friend toward a fatal crash. As he drives, the "privileged man" justifies, in a sustained monologue, his firm opinion that willed destruction is the ultimate act of the poetic imagination. "What I have in mind is an 'accident' so perfectly contrived that it will be unique, spectacular and instantaneous, a physical counterpart to that vision in which it was in fact conceived." Concerned with sex, myth, the imagination, and the absurd, Travesty is one of the most cruelly and vibrantly ironic works to be found in twentieth-century literature.El secreto de Trump: Memorias de un esclavo sexual.
By Damien E Cooper, Orwell Danes. 2017

The It Girl

In this hilarious debut novel, painfully shy Anna is thrust into the spotlight--and onto the cover of every tabloid--when her…
father marries one of the world's most famous actresses.Everyone wants to be famous...don't they? Anna Huntley had very simple goals in life: 1. To recreate famous film scenes with Dog (her pet Labrador) such as the lift from The Lion King during that "Circle of Life" song. 2. To not accidentally set Queen Bee Josie Graham's hair on fire (again). 3. To keep her very first and only two school friends by not acting in her usual manner of socially inept dork and outcast. 4. And to find out whether points 1 and 2 constitute being socially inept or outcastish. But after her dad gets engaged to one of the most famous actresses ever and she unexpectedly becomes famous, she has to add a new goal to her list: 5. To find a closet to hide in with Dog (preferably for life). Grace sneaks onto Apollo 11 with a little help from some surprising allies in this fourth wacky novel, part of…
the all-new In Due Time series."Graceless Grace" is the smartest seventh grader at Sands Middle School, but she's constantly being teased for stumbling over doorjambs and knocking over lunch trays. And lately, the name-calling has been even worse. So when Ms. Tremt offers to lend The Book of Memories to Grace for an extended trip, she decides to go completely out of this world. She travels back to 1969 to stow away on Apollo 11 and become the first kid, the first female, and maybe even the first person to walk on the moon. Take that, teasers! Sneaking onboard Apollo 11 without messing up the mission requires some serious brainpower. Luckily, Grace has something NASA doesn't--a time portal. She opens up The Book of Memories and assembles her dream team: Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Hypatia of Alexandria, and works with them to reduce the cargo just enough to safely board the rocket. Apollo 11 leaves the atmosphere with 6,099,920 pounds of space ship and eighty pounds of middle school girl. Grace impresses Neil Armstrong with her smarts and dazzles the world with her spacewalk. After all, you can't face-plant in zero gravity! But when Grace returns to the present, she's dismayed to discover NASA has covered up her historic achievement. There is no mention of her in history books, no record of her spacewalk. Some things in history can't be changed, explains Ms. Tremt, but people can change. And now, "Graceless Grace" has the confidence to redefine her reputation! The One Where the Kid Nearly Jumps to His Death and Lands in California
By Mary Hershey. 2007
"Mom didn't think it was funny when I took off my leg at school, put it in my locker, and…
then tied a rag around my stump with fake blood on it. After that, though, the kids at school pretty much knew if anyone was going to be cracking jokes about my leg, it was gonna be me. " So says thirteen-year-old Alastair Hudson in this darkly humorous coming-of- age story about the relationship between Alastair-who calls himself Stump to draw shocked attention to his missing leg-and his father, who left the family after the accident that resulted in the amputation five years earlier. When Alastair is sent to spend the summer with his dad and his dad's new wife, father and son are forced to confront the truth of what happened years ago, finally allowing Alastair to move forward with his life.A Traitor Among the Boys
By Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. 1999
The Hatford boys' New Year's resolution is "the girls can stay . . . but only if they play by…
our rules." Their mother insists that they "treat those girls as though they were your sisters." Okay, but somehow the boys' interpretation owes more to sibling rivalry than to brotherly love. The one weak link is young Peter, who doesn't understand the rivalry, openly likes the girls, and sees nothing wrong with sitting in their kitchen eating homemade cookies and answering questions about his brothers' plans. Readers will find themselves laughing out loud at the pranks, the conversations, and one unforgettably embarrassing moment. The high-flying humor is juxtaposed with the budding affection between Josh and Beth and the way all the children pull together during a blizzard. The fifth entry in Naylor's refreshing series chronicling the feud between the Hatfords and the Malloys. From the Hardcover edition.Ruffleclaw

By Jeff Tapia. 2013
There are many stories about kid crusaders who save something, but none like this one. With steampunk, tall tale, and…
just plain silly elements, the story of how ten-year-old twins Jimmy and Stella found out about the unique vehicle called the hippomobile, learned its history, and then used it to rescue their beloved town of Wymore is an original variant on a tried and true theme. A cast of wildly eccentric characters, most of whom are the twins' forty-seven grandmas and grandpas; a liberal sprinkling of diner slang and odd colloquial phrases, many explained in footnotes; and a sense that the events described never took place but could have are among the surprising ingredients of this unconventional creation. The fact that there really was a hippomobile with its own history doesn't interfere with the fun.Melonhead
