By Gordon Korman. 1992
In the world of Gordon Korman, dreamers, geniuses, and misfits do triumph, and in this book they triumph hilariously, wonderfully,…
and in the best Gordon Korman style. Readers will cheer for the Twinkie Squad, which includes Dave with an attitude problem who thinks everything stinks, Yolanda who skips school to watch movies, Gerald, the ten-year-old boy genius terrified of middle-school, hyperactive, wall-climbing Ric, and Anita who agrees with everybody because she can't think for herself. The kids are resentful and bored until Douglas, son of diplomats, visionary, dreamer--the most eccentric sixth-grader in Middle School, joins. Then Commando, smooth mover, basketball star, a short kid who fights bullies and wins, and a way cool guy--until he met Douglas is forced to join up too, thanks to hitting Douglas in the nose with a basketball. Only special students, students who get 45 minutes of group counseling after school every day, get to be in the group labeled Twinkie Squad by the rest of the school who calls them crazy losers and won't go near them. Commando never planned on being that special. But Douglas doesn't understand why Commando is worried. The Twinkie Squad, Douglas feels, has real potential. And he has Big Plans for it. Before Douglas is through, the school will smell like rotting fish, the principal will be on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and reality itself will be up for special discussion. Best of all, with Douglas's help, the Twinkie Squad will have achieved its potential--in ways nobody, not even Douglas Fairchild, could ever have anticipated. You'll start out laughing, laugh your way through the book, and end up high fiving The Twinkie Squad! The cover is described.Cherise the Niece

By Lori Chambers, Jenny Roth, Minnie Smith. 2011
Minnie Smith's (ca. 1874-1933) feminist domestic novel, Is It Just?, is a harsh critique of the injustices perpetuated by male-dominated…
society and law. Published in 1911, it tells the tragic story of Mary Pierce, who, through the actions of her selfish and lazy husband, loses her land, her social standing, and ultimately her life.In Is It Just?, the conventions of the domestic novel - episodic presentation, stock characters, contrived plots, and romantic conclusions - illustrate the superiority of female values and argue for expanded social, political, and legal rights for women. A critical introduction by Jenny Roth and Lori Chambers frames Smith's specific references to the laws and social geography of British Columbia, situating the novel in relation to its historic and literary importance. This unique work of domestic literature adds to our limited library of Canadian feminist writings of the first wave.Menace of the Mutanator (Garfield's Pet Force #4)

By Hilda Glynn-Ward, Patricia Roy. 1974
With tales of a gruesome murder, a typhoid epidemic, corrupt politicians, and a Japanese invasion, The Writing on the Wall…
was intended to shock its readers when it was published in 1921. Thinly disguised as a novel, it is a propaganda tract exhorting white British Columbians to greater vigilance to prevent greedy politicians from selling out to the Chinese and Japanese. It was also designed to convince eastern Canada of British Columbia's need for protections against an onslaught of the 'yellow peril.'This novel is not exceptional in its extreme racism; it reiterates almost every anti-oriental cliché circulating in British Columbia at the time of its publication. While modern readers will find the story horrifying and unbelievable, it is in fact based on real incidents. Many of the views expressed were only exaggerated versions of ideas held throughout the country about non-Anglo-Saxon immigrants. The Writing on the Wall is a vivid illustration of the fear and prejudice with which immigrants were regarded in the early twentieth century.Ma thérapie shopping

Inherited Disorders: Stories, Parables & Problems
By Adam Ehrlich Sachs. 2016
A son receives an inheritance from his father and tries to dispose of it before it destroys him. Inherited Disorders…
tells this elemental story in over 100 hilarious, witty variations.Adam Ehrlich Sachs's Inherited Disorders is a rueful, absurd, and endlessly entertaining look at a most serious subject--the eternally vexed relations between fathers and sons. In a hundred and seventeen shrewd, surreal vignettes, Sachs lays bare the petty rivalries, thwarted affection, and mutual bafflement that have characterized the filial bond since the days of Davidic kings. A philosopher's son kills his father and explains his aphorisms to death. A father bequeaths to his son his jacket, deodorant, and political beliefs. England's most famous medium becomes possessed by the spirit of his skeptical father--who questions, in front of the nation, his son's choice of career. A Czech pianist amputates his fingers one by one to thwart his father, who will not stop composing concertos for him. A nineteenth-century Italian nobleman wills his ill-conceived flying contraption--incapable of actual flight--to his newborn son. In West Hollywood, an aspiring screenwriter must contend with the judgmental visage of his father, a respected public intellectual whose frozen head, clearly disappointed in him, he keeps in his freezer. Keenly inventive, but painfully familiar, these surprisingly tender stories signal the arrival of a brilliant new comic voice--and fresh hope for fathers and sons the world over.Night of the Living Vidiots: A Collection of Comics

By Douglas Lochhead, Margaret A. Brown. 1973
This work cannot be fully understood unless the reader is aware of the writer's motives. The book has a twofold…
meaning -- that of a political novel, and that of the portrayal of a great love and a religious drama. As Disraeli in his novels portrayed the political and social conditions of certain eras of his country, in a simple way this work is intended to portray the conditions existing in Canada at an era when the country was in a state of transition, with the idealistic conception of what the government of a country should be, the conception being based upon a knowledge of the inherent principles of Divine Right and upon Plato's Republic of Justice. The scene is laid prior to the last election during Sir John A. Macdonald's administration. There are no great questions at issue, politics are seen in their lowest form; the protective tariff had been adopted, and with the advent of machinery the old order of things was passing away; the new order had not yet brought any great issues before the people, and the election, commonly called the "Old Flag" election, was run merely on a sentiment of loyalty to the motherland. "My Lady of the Snows" is a woman who has been born "great," and one who has based her life on principles rather than the emotions, or Plato's theory that the emotions should remain subservient to the will.Dot It Down
