This book provides an analysis of the judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union in the Pringle…
case. It focuses on the three main aspects of the ruling. First, it examines the part of the judgment concerning the validity of the European Council Decision 2011/199 - adopted under the simplified revision procedure (Article 48(6) TEU) - which provides for the possibility to establish a financial stability mechanism. Second, it evaluates the new rules developed by the Court in order to interpret agreements concluded exclusively by the member states, such as the ESM Treaty. Third, it assesses the Court's interpretation of the main provisions of the so-called economic pillar of the Economic and Monetary Union and the fundamental rules provided for by the Treaties (nature of competence, financial assistance, institutional balance, judicial review charter of fundamental rights etc. ) with regard to the ESM treaty provisions.By Philipp Wunderlich. 2012
Given rising electricity consumption, coupled with finite resources, and a growing awareness surrounding sustainable energy, ICT-enabled electrical networks such as…
smart grids are increasingly being deployed by energy companies. One aspect of smart grids is smart meter technology (SMT), which are sophisticated digital electrical meters, having the potential to increase energy efficiency in both residential and industrial sectors. However, a challenge to SMT-implementation in residential settings has been its successful adoption by consumers. As many cases in the US, and other parts of the world highlight, such implementation projects have run into resistance from the consumers. Despite these challenges, little research has been conducted on this topic. This study is one of the first that attempts to fill that void by empirically examining the antecedents of SMT adoption amongst potential customers and a group of SMT users. Specifically, this study developed a model surrounding consumers' intention to adopt and use SMT, by drawing on theories of adoption and motivational psychology and also by including a set of context-specific variables.By Claus Dierksmeier. 2016
This book reconstructs major paradigms in the history of economic ethics up to, and including, the present day. Asserting that…
ethics should be integral rather than marginal to economics and management education, Reframing Economic Ethics highlights the need for a paradigm change from mechanistic to humanistic management, and argues that the failures of markets and managers in recent years were paved by a misguided management education. The author shows how the reader can and must learn from the history of economic thinking in order to overcome the theoretical shortcomings and the practical failings of the present system.By Urs Daniel Engels. 2012
This study provides an in-depth analysis of the Hong Kong Ship Recycling Convention as adopted in May 2009 and a…
thorough analysis of the overall status quo of ship recycling regulations. It investigates the lack of sufficient ratifications of the Convention from both a legal and an economic perspective. The first part of the study focuses on the history of the Convention's entry-into-force provision and the rationale behind it. Due to the fact that this provision provides a considerable additional obstacle to the Convention's becoming legally binding, in the second part the focus of the work shifts to unilateral action in this field. An overview of the legal environment of European ship recycling legislation is followed by an analysis and evaluation of a number of proposals by the European Commission attempting to tackle the problems of current ship recycling procedures. With a particular emphasis on (planned) European measures in this regard, the analysis' overall message is one of cautious optimism.By Bruno Dente. 2014
This book proposes a model for understanding how innovative policy decisions are taken in complex political and organizational systems as…
well as the possible strategies that the promoter of the innovation can employ in order to maximize the probability of successful adoption and implementation. It presents a conceptual framework for the analysis of decisional situations in order to design the most appropriate strategies for overcoming conflict (e. g. of the NIMBY variety) and/or increasing the engagement of potentially interested actors. The book includes a template for decisional case studies, a protocol for the definition of a decisional strategy, and an exercise in decisional analysis.By Margaret Walton-Roberts, Jenna Hennebry. 2014
This volume brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars around an important question: how has migration changed in Europe as…
the European Union has enlarged, and what are the consequences for countries (and for migrants themselves) inside and outside of these redrawn jurisdictional and territorial borders? By addressing this question the book contributes to three current debates with respect to EU migration management: 1) that recent developments in EU migration management represent a profound spatial and organizational reconfiguration of the regional governance of migration, 2) the trend towards the externalization or subcontracting of migration control and, 3) how the implications of Europe's changing immigration policy are increasingly felt across the European neighborhood and beyond. Based on new empirical research, the authors in this collection explore these three processes and their consequences for both member and non-member EU states, for migrants themselves, and for migration systems in the region. The collection indicates that despite the rhetoric of social and spatial integration across the EU region, as one wall has come down, new walls have gone up as novel migration and security policy frameworks have been erected - making European immigration more complex, and potentially more influential beyond the EU zone, than ever.By Caroline Shenaz Hossein. 2016
When Grameen Bank was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, microfinance was lauded as an important contributor to the…
economic development of the Global South. However, political scandals, mission-drift, and excessive commercialization have tarnished this example of responsible or inclusive financial development. Politicized Microfinance insightfully discusses exclusion while providing a path towards redemption. In this work, Caroline Shenaz Hossein explores the politics, histories and social prejudices that have shaped the legacy of microbanking in Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica and Trinidad. Writing from a feminist perspective, Hossein's analysis is rooted in original qualitative data and offers multiple solutions that prioritize the needs of marginalized and historically oppressed people of African descent. A must read for scholars of political economy, diaspora studies, social economy, women's studies, as well as development practitioners, Politicized Microfinance convincingly deftly argues for microfinance to return to its origins as a political tool, fighting for those living in the margins.By Ralf Plattfaut. 2014
This book introduces a process-oriented dynamic capability framework to study both, service innovation and Business Process Management (BPM). Results from applications…
in several case studies and surveys are reported. They reflect, e. g. , capability development and maturity models. Based on these findings, a method to support service innovation is introduced. This method can help organizations in developing new service business models in a more effective and efficient way. In today's networked service society, service innovation becomes increasingly important. Reasons for this development can be found in the transformation of economies and in the growing importance of product-service systems. The concept of service innovation is related to Business Process Management (BPM) and shares several important traits. They both are process-oriented dynamic capabilities to adapt (service) processes to changing environments.By Thomas Sowell. 2015
In this fifth edition of Basic Economics, Thomas Sowell revises and updates his popular book on common sense economics, bringing…
the world into clearer focus through a basic understanding of the fundamental economic principles and how they explain our lives. Drawing on lively examples from around the world and from centuries of history, Sowell explains basic economic principles for the general public in plain English. Basic Economics, which has now been translated into six languages and has additional material online, remains true to its core principle: that the fundamental facts and principles of economics do not require jargon, graphs, or equations, and can be learned in a relaxed and even enjoyable way.By Ulrich Stelkens, Wolfgang Weiß, Michael Mirschberger. 2011
The Services Directive is one of the cornerstones for the realization of the EU internal market and is fundamental to…
economic and legal experts, as well as to the general public. This book analyses in detail the different steps taken by each of the 27 EU Member States in the implementation process of the Services Directive. It provides not only detailed information about the changes in national law adopted by the Member States, but also facilitates a comparison of the different implementation strategies. It gives an insight in the heterogeneity or homogeneity of implementation concepts and shows how European legislation affects legislation that were originally nationally dominated, such as the law of national administration. Valuable for academics interested in European and administrative law and the transposition of European lawmaking into domestic law, as well as for civil servants in ministries, chambers of commerce, local governments and other comparable institutions having to implement the Directive.By Niall Kishtainy. 2014

The history of Italian colonial affairs has recently attracted renewed interest from historians and economists. It is a complex and…
involved question. Over the last few years, though perhaps slightly later than the more mature historiography of other European countries, the work of some important scholars has opened up new fields of investigation and research. Recent studies have tried to analyse in greater depth the working mechanisms of the colonial system, broadening the field of investigation also to the perspective of African countries and the political-economic equilibriums of the second half of the 20th century. This study fits into this area of research and analyses crucial aspects of the decolonisation of Somalia, the history of the presence of Italian banking in Somaliland; relations between Italian and Somali institutions; Italian political-monetary policies during the reconstruction and the first economic boom.By Knut Sydsaeter, Peter Berck, Arne Strøm. 2005
This volume presents mathematical formulas and theorems commonly used in economics. It includes both formulas like Roy`s identity that are…
peculiar to economics and formulas like Leibniz's rule that are common to many areas of applied mathematics. The volume is meant to be a reference work, to be used by students in conjunction with a textbook and by researchers in need of exact statements of mathematical results. The volume is the first grouping of this material for a specifically economist audience.By Pim Martens, Axel Dreher, Noel Gaston. 2008
Globalisation is a timely and controversial topic. Against the chorus of globalisation's proponents and detractors, the authors propose an approach…
for measuring globalisation and its consequences. Undertaking a comprehensive review of the literature on globalisation and using data from the MGI and KOF indices, the well-respected authors build a framework for defining globalisation and analyzing the relationships among economic, political, and social variables.By Szu-Ting Chen, Hsiang-Ke Chao, Roberta L. Millstein. 2013
This volume addresses fundamental issues in the philosophy of science in the context of two most intriguing fields: biology and…
economics. Written by authorities and experts in the philosophy of biology and economics, Mechanism and Causality in Biology and Economics provides a structured study of the concepts of mechanism and causality in these disciplines and draws careful juxtapositions between philosophical apparatus and scientific practice. By exploring the issues that are most salient to the contemporary philosophies of biology and economics and by presenting comparative analyses, the book serves as a platform not only for gaining mutual understanding between scientists and philosophers of the life sciences and those of the social sciences, but also for sharing interdisciplinary research that combines both philosophical concepts in both fields. The book begins by defining the concepts of mechanism and causality in biology and economics, respectively. The second and third parts investigate philosophical perspectives of various causal and mechanistic issues in scientific practice in the two fields. These two sections include chapters on causal issues in the theory of evolution; experiments and scientific discovery; representation of causal relations and mechanism by models in economics. The concluding section presents interdisciplinary studies of various topics concerning extrapolation of life sciences and social sciences, including chapters on the philosophical investigation of conjoining biological and economic analyses with, respectively, demography, medicine and sociology.By Stephen Cohen, J. In a radical break with the past, information now flows like water, and we must learn how to tap into…
its stream. Individuals and companies can no longer rely on the stocks of knowledge that they've carefully built up and stored away. Information now flows like water, and we must learn how to tap into the stream. But many of us remain stuck in old practices--practices that could undermine us as we search for success and meaning. In this revolutionary book, three doyens of the Internet age, whose path-breaking work has made headlines around the world, reveal the adjustments we must make if we take these changes seriously. In a world of increasing risk and opportunity, we must understand the importance of pull. Understood and used properly, the power of pull can draw out the best in people and institutions by connecting them in ways that increase understanding and effectiveness. Pull can turn uncertainty into opportunity, and enable small moves to achieve outsized impact. Drawing on pioneering research, The Power of Pull shows how to apply its principles to unlock the hidden potential of individuals and organizations, and how to use it as a force for social change and the development of creative talent. The authors explore how to use the power of pull to: Access new sources of information Attract likeminded individuals from around the world Shape serendipity to increase the likelihood of positive chance encounters Form creation spaces to drive you and your colleagues to new heights Transform your organization to adapt to the flow of knowledge The Power of Pull is essential reading for entrepreneurs, managers, and anybody interested in understanding and harnessing the shifting forces of our networked world.By Jayshree Pandya. 2012
Dr. Jayshree Pandya, founder of Risk Group LLC (http://www.riskgroupllc.com), is ahead of the curve in addressing the changing global fundamentals…
of the emerging Global Age. Global Age, and its changing global fundamentals has brought complex, chaotic, and turbulent times for every nation--where failures at all levels have come to become self-evident, repetitive, destructive, and potentially hopeless in nature and uncertainty. Nations are caught off guard. From what is visible across nations today, the promise of progress and prosperity for all nations does not seem to have materialized in a Global Age. Instead of progress and prosperity, what is visible today is crisis and catastrophe that is overpowering and overwhelming the capability of most nations to meet their promise of progress and prosperity. Nations are in crisis. This introductory book Global Age: NGIOA @ Risk addresses the global shifts and the changing global fundamentals of Global Age, to lay out much needed foundation of an integrated NGIOA risk governance framework for the coming tomorrow. This book will make a convincing case for the far-reaching need and understanding of global risk concepts, global risk fundamentals, and risk centric integrated NGIOA governance. The integrated NGIOA risk governance approach proposed and discussed in this initiative is rational, practical, and feasible. It will help create a dynamic, vibrant, and sustainable NGIOA economy of a Global Age. This initiative is a first step towards that.By J. F. Rischard. 2002
In this age of instant communication and biotechnology, on this ever-smaller planet, what kinds of problems have we created for…
ourselves? How do we tackle them in a world where the accustomed methods used by nation-states may be reaching their natural limits? In High Noon, J. F. Rischard challenges us to take a new approach to the twenty most important and urgent global problems of the twenty-first century. Rischard finds their common thread: we don't have an effective way of dealing with the problems that our increasingly crowded, interconnected world creates. Our difficulties belong to the future, but our means of solving them belong to the past.Rischard proposes new vehicles for global problem-solving that are startling and persuasive. With its clear-eyed urgency and refreshing specificity, High Noon is an agenda-setting book that everyone who cares about the future must read.By Ad J. van de Gevel, Charles N. Noussair. 2013
The manuscript reviews some key ideas about artificial intelligence, and relates them to economics. These include its relation to robotics,…
and the concepts of synthetic emotions, consciousness, and life. The economic implications of the advent of artificial intelligence, such as its effect on prices and wages, appropriate patent policy, and the possibility of accelerating productivity, are discussed. The growing field of artificial economics and the use of artificial agents in experimental economics is considered.
