- an Order that survives to this day with the greater part of its written heritage preserved. This volume brings together a selection of its finest works, which speak powerfully across the centuries to modern readers. Writings by St Bernard of Clairvaux (c. 1090-1153) - including his letters, The Life of Malachy the Irishman, sermons on the Song of Songs and the sharply satirical Apologia for Abbot William - reveal him to be a highly individual and influential writer of the Middle Ages. Also included here are a charming description of Clairvaux, biographies of abbots and a series of exemplary stories, all drawing on the Scriptures to express intensely personal forms of monastic theology. The Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English

Some sixty years after the Scrolls' first discovery, this revised and much expanded edition of The Dead Sea Scrolls in English crowns a lifetime of research by the great Qumran scholar Geza Vermes. As well as superb translations of all non-biblical texts sufficiently well preserved to be rendered into English, there are also a number of previously unpublished texts, and a new preface.Since its first publication in 1962, The Dead Sea Scrolls in English has established itself as the standard English translation of the non-Biblical Qumran Scrolls and as giving an astonishing insight to the organization, customs, history and beliefs of the community responsible for them. This edition will contain new material, together with extensive new introductory material and notes. The Cloud of Unknowing and Other Works

'A first-class storyteller' The TimesThroughout the three hundred years that followed the Act of Supremacy – which, by making Henry VIII head of the Church, confirmed in law the breach with Rome – English Catholics were prosecuted, persecuted and penalised for the public expression of their faith. Even after the passing of the emancipation acts Catholics were still the victims of institutionalised discrimination. The first book to tell the story of the Catholics in Britain in a single volume, The Catholics includes much previously unpublished information. It focuses on the lives, and sometimes deaths, of individual Catholics – martyrs and apostates, priests and laymen, converts and recusants. It tells the story of the men and women who faced the dangers and difficulties of being what their enemies still call ‘Papists’. It describes the laws which circumscribed their lives, the political tensions which influenced their position within an essentially Anglican nation and the changes in dogma and liturgy by which Rome increasingly alienated their Protestant neighbours – and sometime even tested the loyalty of faithful Catholics. The survival of Catholicism in Britain is the triumph of more than simple faith. It is the victory of moral and spiritual unbending certainty. Catholicism survives because it does not compromise. It is a characteristic that excites admiration in even a hardened atheist. The Canterbury Puzzles

ever. On a bright and sunny June afternoon, a seven-year-old boy was left in the care of his teenage neighbour. No one knew, or would even have dreamed of suspecting, that the teenager was a Satanist. The two went out to the fields to look for rabbits. The child was never seen alive again. For the first time, in The Boy in the Attic, David Malone reveals the exact events of that summer day: how the youngster was lured to his death, how the teenager came to delve so deeply into the occult and the nightmarish scene awaiting police when they entered the attic. But there is another disturbing question - how is it that this murder, which was easily one of the most shocking and horrific in living memory, was barely reported upon at all? Why have you never heard of the boy in the attic until now?A Book of Uncommon Prayer

principles to bring psychological healing have fallen short of the deeper needs of many of these hurting people. This has been true for several reasons. Most models of Biblical change have been limited to either confronting and demanding change, or acting and practicing new Biblical ways of doing things. These methods do not deal with the entire person: will, spirit, past experiences, mind, perceptions, needs, motivation, actions, and emotions. They do not take into account the complexity of the human heart and the interactions between its members. This book addresses these problems through the use of the "Train of Psychological Wholeness," a concept developed from Proverbs Chapter Three. It provides an understanding of a large number of these principles, a detailed method for developing counseling plans using Biblical principles, and counseling methods and techniques for their application in order to bring about dynamic psychological healing. This book explains 44 of the most important principles in the Bible from a psychological perspective and provides an in-depth method for developing counseling plans using biblical principles for common psychological problems. This material includes a discussion of 13 classical methods of biblical change, a new model for understanding the human heart and techniques for applying biblical principles in counseling. It includes counseling plans and methods for treating anxiety, panic attacks, obsessions, compulsions, sexual abuse, domestic violence, marital problems, and Borderline Personality Disorder. How To Find Your Soulmate Without Losing Your Soul: 21 Secrets For Women

church. Yet, most churches do not have an intentional plan for doing this. In this book, Mac Lake reveals a practical strategy for addressing this problem. How do you develop leaders in a church setting—good leaders, qualified leaders, leaders who are committed, who possess the DNA of the church, and leaders who produce results? The majority of churches have tried everything, but is what they are doing working? Unfortunately, in most cases, no. The Multiplication Effect is a proven, tested program, designed using unique training modules to help identify potential leaders, equip and disciple them at every level of their leadership journey, and empower them to multiply themselves by developing other leaders. Churches who use this plan will become &“cultures&” of leader development built into the structure and mission statement of the church and thus solve their leadership shortage.John of the Cross: Carmel, Desire and Transformation (Contemporary Theological Explorations in Mysticism)

By Jim Johnson. 2024
Faith and facts are reconciled in this revelatory examination of biblical and secular truths that follows the path to God…
through science, not around it. Always a man of science, Jim Johnson accepted Christ into his life shortly after his fiftieth birthday. This acceptance of God&’s unseeable power did not shake his belief in science—it strengthened it. Through years of research on the world&’s evolution, Johnson found that in studying every new hypothesis and theory, he believes even more in God&’s universal role.Timeless Vision: Understanding God&’s Creation through the Lens of Science bridges the gap between faith and science. Johnson examines the natural progression of Earth&’s creation alongside the seven biblical days, explains the conundrum of time, and expands upon the ever-evolving relationship humanity has with science and religion. Through analyzing scripture with detailed data and using science to bolster Christian beliefs, Johnson reveals just how rare and privileged Earth and human life truly are. It is through studying science and faith together, not apart, that we can see how God&’s plan was developed and why He did it. One is not complete without the other. From the book Jacket: 'a fine book . . . no one, after reading it, will think about Britain in…
quite the same way again.' the. M. Luhrmann, Times Literary Supplement This book offers the first full-scale scholarly work given the world on modern pagan witchcraft. Ronald Hutton examines the nature of this religion, its development, and attitudes toward it in British society since 1800, presenting an authoritative insight into a hitherto little-known aspect of modern social history. 'It all makes for riveting reading and, despite Hutton's demolition of the supposed lineage of witchcraft, I am tempted after reading his book to become a witch myself.' Robert Irwin, Independent 'Button has synthesised a huge body of sources, and woven together a fascinating narrative with supreme skill . . . his Triumph of the Moon proves to be a triumph of cultural history.' Owen Davies, History Today '[Button] shows a bracing and candid scepticism about the architects of pagan witchcraft ... a very interesting story.' Marina Warner, The TimesTalking with the Children of God: Prophecy and Transformation in a Radical Religious Group
By Gordon Shepherd, Gary Shepherd. 2010
Grounded in direct, systematic observation by neutral observers, Talking with the Children of God is a unique study of the…
radical religious movement now known as The Family International. The book draws on extraordinarily candid interviews with the group's leaders and administrative staff. In revealing new information about the organization's history, beliefs, and use of prophecy, Gordon Shepherd and Gary Shepherd offer a highly detailed case study that is both an antidote to sensationalized coverage of the group and a means for understanding the transformational practices of new religious movements in general. One of the most controversial groups emerging from the Jesus People movement of the 1960s, the Family originally was known as The Children of God. Under leader David Berg, members proclaimed an apocalyptic "Endtime," shunned secular occupations, lived communally, and adopted unusual sexual practices that led to abuse scandals in the 1970s and 1980s. Following Berg's death in 1994, the organization began to dramatically alter its evangelization efforts and decision-making processes. Talking with the Children of God builds a picture of a complex organization with ten thousand core members worldwide, including details on the lives, careers, and responsibilities of the second generation and their efforts to defend their faith. The authors summarize the Family's history and beliefs as well as its controversial past. In particular, they analyze the organization's use of prophecy--or channeled revelations from Jesus and other spiritual beings--for making decisions and setting policy, revealing how this essentially democratic process works and how it shapes Family life and culture. These remarkable insights are the result of sixteen years of surveys and field observations conducted in Family member homes in sixteen countries, plus four days of face-to-face interviews with Family leaders and organizational staff. The volume also includes condensed transcripts of the interviews with analysis by Shepherd and Shepherd.Sojourner in the Promised Land: Forty Years among the Mormons
