Do Americans live in a planned economy? Most of us would say no. John Munkirs. however, argues that the American…
economy has “centralized private sector planning.” Assessing 138 major industries and 5 major market areas, the author shows how firms in a given industry are technologically, financially, and administratively interdependent. He then demonstrates how industries are both structurally and functionally interdependent and how a series of economic planning instruments evolved over the years that both allow and may even necessitate regional, national, and international private sector planning.Baby Name Numerology: Give Your Baby the Best Start with the Magic of Numbers

By Ken Bikoff. 2020
Hoosier Beginnings tells the story of Indiana University athletics from its founding in 1867 to the interwar period. Crammed full…
of rare images and little-known anecdotes, it recounts how sport at IU developed from its very first baseball team, made up mostly of local Bloomington townsfolks, to the rich and powerful tradition that is the "Hoosier" legacy. Hoosier Beginnings uncovers fascinating stories that have been lost to time and showcases how Indiana University athletics built its foundation as a pivotal team in sports history. Learn about the fatal train collision that nearly stopped IU athletics in its tracks; IU's first African American football player; the infamous Baseball Riot of 1913; how a horde of students grabbed axes and chopped down 200 apple trees to make way for a new gymnasium; and the legendary 1910 football team that didn't allow a single touchdown all season—but still lost a game. Most importantly, it attempts to answer the burning question, where did the "Hoosiers" get their mysterious name?Buzzie and the Bull chronicles a baseball year in the lives of two lifelong friends who couldn&’t be more different:…
Buzzie Bavasi, the legendary general manager of the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, and Al &“the Bull&” Ferrara, bon vivant, fountain of joy, and bench player. Their 1965 baseball journey encompassed a thrilling pennant race settled on the final day of the season, a city engulfed in flames, a perfect game, and a GM who extolled his friend the Bull as a hero in May and then banished him from the team to the depths of public purgatory in July. The partnership of these two characters—the general manager who valued fearlessness above all else and the crazy player who loved living on the edge—became the embodiment of champions who never choked in the clutch. Over seventeen years, Bavasi&’s teams won eight pennants and four World Series titles. His approach deserves review, and his friendship with Ferrara illustrates the ground on which he staked his baseball career. The summer of 1965 proved Bavasi&’s thesis that champions are built on players with one core characteristic: nerves of steel.Buzzie and the Bull offers a counterpoint to today&’s focus on advanced statistical analysis that may be crowding out the important work of discovering a player&’s unique human qualities: the intangibles. Gauge those intangibles correctly and you get an edge—and edges help win championships. The Diamond in the Bronx: Yankee Stadium and the Politics of New York

By Donn Rogosin. 1983
On Feb. 13, 1920, a group of independent black baseball team owners held a meeting at a YMCA in Kansas…
City, Missouri. While they couldn&’t have known at the time that they were about to change the course of American history, it was out of that meeting that the Negro National League was born. The league flourished throughout the 1920s and beyond, becoming the first successful, organized professional black baseball league in the country. By providing a playing field for African American and Hispanic baseball players to showcase their world-class baseball abilities, it became a force that provided cohesion and a source of pride in black communities. Among them were the legendary pitchers Smokey Joe Williams, whose fastball seemed to &“come off a mountain top,&” Satchel Paige, the ageless wonder who pitched for five decades, and such hitters as Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard, and Oscar Charleston, whose talents as players may have even been surpassed by their total commitment to their profession and hardiness. Leading the leagues were memorable characters like Gus Greenlee of the Pittsburgh Crawfords and Effa Manley of the Newark Eagles. Although their games were ignored by white-owned newspapers and radio stations, black ballplayers and their teams became folk heroes in cities such as Chicago, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York, and Washington DC, where the teams drew large crowds and became major contributors to the local community life, with influence extending far beyond the baseball fields. This memorable narrative, filled with the memories of many surviving Negro League players, pulls the veil off these &“invisible men&” who were forced into the segregated leagues. What emerges is a glorious chapter in African American history and an often overlooked aspect of our American past.Catcher in the Wry: Outrageous But True Stories of Baseball
By Bob Uecker, Micky Herskowitz. 1982

a lifetime .200 hitter. They left the fans cheering. If he was lucky, he left them laughing. But anyone with talent can play major-league baseball. For Bob Uecker, it was a triumph of the human spirit. Now, Bob Uecker tells the whole, never-before-revealed story of his undistinguished career as a catcher with the Braves, Cardinals, and Phillies, his success as a broadcaster for the Milwaukee Brewers and ABC-TV's Monday Night Baseball, and the incredible fame he has achieved as the star of a national beer commercial.Summer of '98: When Homers Flew, Records Fell, and Baseball Reclaimed America
By Mike Lupica. 1999
In the summer of '61, Mike Lupica's father left notes for him in the night: Maris hit another, Mantle two-for-four,…
Yanks won. That was his first golden summer. He thought there'd never be another one like it -- until the "Summer of '98", when he found himself leaving notes for his own sons: Sosa hit another, McGwire hit one back. And the Yanks won. In 1998, the conversation of the country was about baseball again, as the taste of the 1994 strike was finally washed away in a sweet flood of glory. With humor and feeling, Lupica recaptures that season, but not in any ordinary way. In Fargo, North Dakota, Roger Maris's boyhood best friend watches McGwire hit 62. In Washington Heights, New York City, the scout who saw Sammy Sosa get off the bus from Santo Domingo celebrates, along with half a million Dominicans. The Little League champions from Toms River stand in awe on the field at Yankee Stadium; Joe DiMaggio talks as he watches the Yankees have the kind of year he always had; Cal Ripken speaks from the past about how he always intended his streak to end; a divorced father watches with a lump in his throat as McGwire lifts his son at home plate. David Wells, Kerry Wood, Shane Spencer, Ken Griffey, Jr. -- all the boys of summer come alive in unique and special ways, as we're reminded, for one season at least, that, yes, they do play baseball like they used to.Natural Pregnancy

children for a fraction of the cost of surrogacy elsewhere with little to no government oversight or regulation. In the first detailed ethnography of India's surrogacy industry, Amrita Pande visits clinics and hostels and speaks with surrogates and their families, clients, doctors, brokers, and hostel matrons in order to shed light on this burgeoning business and the experiences of the laborers within it. From recruitment to training to delivery, Pande's research focuses on how reproduction meets production in surrogacy and how this reflects characteristics of India's larger labor system. Pande's interviews prove surrogates are more than victims of disciplinary power, and she examines the strategies they deploy to retain control over their bodies and reproductive futures. While some women are coerced into the business by their families, others negotiate with clients and their clinics to gain access to technologies and networks otherwise closed to them. As surrogates, the women Pande meets get to know and make the most of advanced medical discoveries. They traverse borders and straddle relationships that test the boundaries of race, class, religion, and nationality. Those who focus on the inherent inequalities of India's surrogacy industry believe the practice should be either banned or strictly regulated. Pande instead advocates for a better understanding of this complex labor market, envisioning an international model of fair-trade surrogacy founded on openness and transparency in all business, medical, and emotional exchanges. What We Didn't Expect: Personal Stories about Premature Birth
