Concluding Unscientific Postscripts to Philosophical Fragments (Volume II, Historical Introduction, Supplement, Notes, and Index)
By Howard V. Hong, Edna H. Hong, Søren Kierkegaard. 1992
In Philosophical Fragments the pseudonymous author Johannes Climacus explored the question: What is required in order to go beyond Socratic…
recollection of eternal ideas already possessed by the learner? Written as an afterword to this work, Concluding Unscientific Postscript is on one level a philosophical jest, yet on another it is Climacus's characterization of the subjective thinker's relation to the truth of Christianity. At once ironic, humorous, and polemical, this work takes on the "unscientific" form of a mimical-pathetical-dialectical compilation of ideas. Whereas the movement in the earlier pseudonymous writings is away from the aesthetic, the movement in Postscript is away from speculative thought. Kierkegaard intended Postscript to be his concluding work as an author. The subsequent "second authorship" after The Corsair Affair made Postscript the turning point in the entire authorship. Part One of the text volume examines the truth of Christianity as an objective issue, Part Two the subjective issue of what is involved for the individual in becoming a Christian, and the volume ends with an addendum in which Kierkegaard acknowledges and explains his relation to the pseudonymous authors and their writings. The second volume contains the scholarly apparatus, including a key to references and selected entries from Kierkegaard's journals and papers.Miles and Me
By Quincy Troupe. 2000
Quincy Troupe's candid account of his friendship with Miles Davis is a revealing portrait of a great musician and an…
intimate study of a unique relationship. It is also an engrossing chronicle of the author's own development, both artistic and personal. As Davis's collaborator on Miles: The Autobiography, Troupe--one of the major poets to emerge from the 1960s--had exceptional access to the musician. This memoir goes beyond the life portrayed in the autobiography to describe in detail the processes of Davis's spectacular creativity and the joys and difficulties his passionate, contradictory temperament posed to the men's friendship. It shows how Miles Davis, both as a black man and an artist, influenced not only Quincy Troupe but whole generations. Troupe has written that Miles Davis was "irascible, contemptuous, brutally honest, ill-tempered when things didn't go his way, complex, fair-minded, humble, kind and a son-of-a-bitch." The author's love and appreciation for Davis make him a keen, though not uncritical, observer. He captures and conveys the power of the musician's presence, the mesmerizing force of his personality, and the restless energy that lay at the root of his creativity. He also shows Davis's lighter side: cooking, prowling the streets of Manhattan, painting, riding his horse at his Malibu home. Troupe discusses Davis's musical output, situating his albums in the context of the times--both political and musical--out of which they emerged. The Writings of Hammurabi: The First Complete Law Code

TIME Paul McCartney: The legend rocks on
By James Kaplan. 2012
When Paul McCartney played Yankee Stadium in July 2011 for two sold-out concerts, the 69 year old "looked as if…
he was having a boyish romp," said the New York Times, marvelling at his 35-song performance. Age hasn't slowed down this former Beatle, nor dampened his ambition. As the most successful musician in pop-music history turns 70 this June, the editors of TIME will publish a celebration of Paul McCartney's unparalleled career. Written by James Kaplan, author of the acclaimed Sinatra biography Frank: the Voice, TIME's richly illustrated book will give readers a backstage tour of the many chapters of Mc-Cartney's life: as the precocious son of a Liverpool trumpet player, the "cute Beatle" of the Fab Four years, the prolific song writing partner of John Lennon, the psychedelic seeker, the devoted husband of Linda Eastman, the reborn frontman of the band Wings, the shrewd businessman with a net worth of hundreds of millions, and the social activist with concerns ranging from animal rights to land mines. For McCartney, the adventures never cease. As he told TIME in 2005, when asked if he would still indulge audiences with oldies like "Hey Jude": "They'll get that too, but you have to move forward as well as go back. As they say, the show must go on!".LIFE Mary: Blessed Art Thou Among Women
By The Editors of Life. 2017
Let's talk about Mary. Not everyone needs a brother or sister or savior, or accepts that a savior has arrived…
historically or will do so one day. But everyone once had a mother. We all need the mother figure, and if any confirmation of this basic fact is required, it lies in the great respect shown "Mary" or "Miriam" by other religions. Jesus does not necessarily figure as a vessel of salvation for Muslims and Jews, but He is held in high regard, and the young woman who gave birth to Him and raised Him is praised. Whoever she was, she must have been substantial, smart and strong. She must have been a fine mother.PEOPLE Glen Campbell: A Life In Song, 1936-2017

monographs. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. In a time when conservative politicians challenge the irrefutability of scientific findings such as climate change, it is more important than ever to understand the conflict at the heart of the “religion vs. science” debates unfolding in the public sphere. In this groundbreaking work, John H. Evans reveals that, with a few limited exceptions, even the most conservative religious Americans accept science’s ability to make factual claims about the world. However, many religious people take issue with the morality implicitly promoted by some forms of science. Using clear and engaging scholarship, Evans upends the prevailing notion that there is a fundamental conflict over the way that scientists and religious people make claims about nature and argues that only by properly understanding moral conflict between contemporary religion and science will we be able to contribute to a more productive interaction between these two great institutions. The Power of Purpose: Creating Meaning in Your Life and Work

compatibility of Buddhism and science. In "Buddhism and Science", Donald S. By Crystal Downing. 2016
Salvation from Cinema offers something new to the burgeoning field of "religion and film": the religious significance of film technique.…
Discussing the history of both cinematic devices and film theory, Crystal Downing argues that attention to the material medium echoes Christian doctrine about the materiality of Christ’s body as the medium of salvation. Downing cites Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu perspectives on film in order to compare and clarify the significance of medium within the frameworks of multiple traditions. This book will be useful to professors and students interested in the relationship between religion and film.Faith and Reason: The Universality Of God And Fallacy Of Atheism
By Jim I Jones. 2017
Faith and Reason may be of interest to people who wish to see a path to God based on reason.…
A concept of God is foundational for the sciences, philosophy, anthropology, psychology, and sociology as well as theology and major religions. The concept of no god and atheism is fallacious; it is nonsense to deny the universality of God, which plays a significant role in the lives of more than three-quarters of the world’s people. The book includes ideas from distinguished theologians, philosophers and scientists. The need for consideration of a theological framework for religion is presented. Its purpose is twofold. First, it acts as a roadmap for understanding societal and personal improvement and advancement initiatives that use a holistic view of the history of relevant philosophical perspectives to present how belief and commitment to community can guide improving the human condition. Second, it presents detailed modeling constructs, and references to specific thinkers and philosophers to demonstrate the need for a spiritual relationship with God and each other. This wide-ranging book explores the diversity of esoteric and occult beliefs.Neo-Paganism is one of the fastest-growing new religions in the…
western world where witchcraft or Wicca, Druidry, and Urban Shamanism are thriving. Alongside this there has been an upsurge in New Age ideas of an even wider variety, including astrology, Tarot, numerology, and many others. And then there are members of various schools of occult science, practising High Magic. Why this new interest in old beliefs? Why are millions of educated people today abandoning both the established religion of their parents and 21st century scientific rationalism and turning to magic and esoteric teachings? In their search for spirituality those who follow these paths claim to be applying ancient wisdom to the modern world. The Brief History of Secret Religions, a companion book to The Brief History of Secret Societies, looks at the history and variety of these esoteric movements, where they came from and what they tell us about the world today.Praise for The New Believers:'an excellent guide to fringe religions that juxtaposes "respectable" movements and those conventionally dismissed as cults.' By Robin Morgan. 2006
The Religious Right is gaining enormous power in the United States, thanks to a well-organized, media-savvy movement with powerful friends…
in high places. Yet many Americans -- both observant and secular -- are alarmed by this trend, especially by the Religious Right's attempts to erase the boundary between church and state and re-make the U.S. into a Christian nation. But most Americans lack the tools for arguing with the Religious Right, especially when fundamentalist conservatives claim their tradition started with the framers of the Constitution. "Fighting Words" is a tool-kit for arguing, especially for those of us who haven't read the founding documents of this nation since grad school. Robin Morgan has assembled a lively, accessible, eye-opening primer and reference tool, a "verbal karate" guide, revealing what the Framers and many other leading Americans really believed -- in their own words -- rescuing the Founders from images of dusty, pompous old men in powdered wigs, and resurrecting them as the revolutionaries they truly were: a hodgepodge of freethinkers, Deists, agnostics, Christians, atheists, and Freemasons -- and they were radicals as well.Dimensions of the Sacred: An Anatomy of the World's Beliefs
By Ninian Smart. 1996
A world-renowned religion scholar explores the world's major religions and comparable secular systems of thought in this unusually wide-ranging and…
accessible work. Ninian Smart considers Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism, as well as Marxist-Leninism, Maoism, nationalism, and Native American, African, and other systems of belief. His goal is to advance our understanding of how we as human beings interact thoughtfully with the cosmos and express the exigencies of our own nature and existence. Smart demonstrates that diverse systems of belief reflect several recurring themes: the tendency to worship, the contemplative life, story-telling, a view of history, ethical instruction, guidelines on bodily practices, rituals, and visual icons. He examines each of these themes in relation to specific belief systems. He points out that religions and comparable worldviews should be studied at least as much through their practices as through their beliefs. The result of twenty-five years of research, this comprehensive book is nothing less than an analysis of the entire pattern of human spiritual life, viewed through what Smart calls "the grammar of symbols, the modes and forms in which religion manifests itself."The Secret Revealed: Exposing the Truth About the Law of Attraction
