Shakespeare and Space
By Ina Habermann, Michelle Witen. 2016
This collection offers an overview of the ways in which space has become relevant to the study of Shakespearean drama…
and theatre. It distinguishes various facets of space, such as structural aspects of dramatic composition, performance space and the evocation of place, linguistic, social and gendered spaces, early modern geographies, and the impact of theatrical mobility on cultural exchange and the material world. These facets of space are exemplified in individual essays. Throughout, the Shakespearean stage is conceived as a topological 'node', or interface between different times, places and people - an approach which also invokes Edward Soja's notion of 'Thirdspace' to describe the blend between the real and the imaginary characteristic of Shakespeare's multifaceted theatrical world. Part Two of the volume emphasises the theatrical mobility of Hamlet - conceptually from an anthropological perspective, and historically in the tragedy's migrations to Germany, Russia and North America.3200 Old-Time Cuts and Ornaments (Dover Pictorial Archive)

By Gordon-Van Tine Co.. 1923
In the post-World War I era, as the economic boom of the 1920s gathered momentum, millions of Americans set out…
to make the dream of owning their own home come true. Labor and materials were plentiful and cheap, and new trends in home design made the prospect of homebuilding an exciting venture. This fascinating book, a reprint of a rare catalog of prefabricated houses from 1923, reveals in detail the types of design offered to those in the market for a new home in the early 1920s.Of the 117 designs included, most are substantial middle-class homes. But the popularity of cottages and bungalows is also apparent in the wide selection of practical and appealing designs depicted. And there are large, formal homes as well, many of which embody America's unflagging interest in colonial styling. Some have affluent touches such as a sleeping porch or a sun room. Many reflect a strong interest in exterior detailing, in the form of cypress siding, broad eaves, heavy timber brackets, stucco pillars, and flower boxes, among other features. Each house is shown in a large frontal illustration. Floor plans for the first and second floors are included, and interior and exterior detailing are extensively described. The specifics of plumbing, heating, and lighting are included in a special section at the back of the book.Architects, architectural and social historians -- anyone interested in American home design -- will enjoy the rich variety of designs presented. Republished in association with the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, this authentic catalog provides not only an indispensable repository of information about the homes themselves but a source of insight into American life at a time when owning a home became a widely realizable dream for a rapidly growing middle class.600 Butterflies and Moths in Full Color (Dover Pictorial Archive)

By Kim Solga, Maryann F. Kohl. 2008
Fun and easy art-appreciation activities abound in this resource that features 75 American artists from colonial times to the present.…
A brief biography for each artist tells why his or her work is important, and a kid-tested art activity tries out the artist's approach. For Georgia O'Keeffe, the activity is a desert painting; for Frederic Remington, a face cast; for Leroy Nieman, a sketch of athletes; and for James Whistler, a clay engraving. Projects stress the creative process and encourage kids to try unusual techniques such as block printing, soak-stain, and stone carving as they learn about architecture, drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture. A resource guide provides a glossary of art terms, a list that groups the artists by style, a list of the artists' birthdays, an index of art supplies, and websites for viewing art online.Scribble Art: Independent Creative Art Experiences for Children

of Bordeaux. Its 78 etchings recapture the incomparable grandeur of Goya's art as well as the major themes of his works -- the Bible, human folly, and the brutal pageantry of bullfighting.Savage yet sympathetic, the nightmare visions of The Proverbs are among Goya's most enigmatic works. The realism of La Tauromaquia and The Bulls of Bordeaux is similarly striking, with remarkably accurate images of bulls and fighters. Each etching appears with the original caption and an English translation. Additional text sheds light on the life and times of the great Spanish master. Students, collectors, and other art lovers will prize this magnificently reproduced edition, which is also the lowest-priced collection of Goya's etchings. The Art of the Cinematographer

visual mechanics of photography in its own native terms. Each section is organised into discrete units that articulate a working method for communicating particular ideas and capturing certain subjects. Dive into beautiful images and explore how each compositional element is placed and arranged in relationship to each other. Examine the outtakes from each shoot to understand why one particular image succeeded, compared to those shot before and after. Track the viewer?s eye as it moves throughout the photo to see the optical dynamics held within each frame. And most of all, internalise this graphic language so you can instantly recognise amazing and powerful shots as they appear in your own viewfinder. The Gothic Image: Religious Art In France Of The Thirteenth Century

By Ernst Haeckel. 1974
Ernst Heinrich Haeckel (1834-1919) was renowned as one of the foremost early exponents of Darwinism. His work was credited with…
having caused the acceptance of Darwinism in Europe, and his popular studies - preaching the continuity of all life, organic and inorganic, from prehistoric time to the present - converted tens of thousands of readers all over the world. Today, although no one is greatly interested in Haeckel the biologist-philosopher, his work is increasingly prized for something he himself would probably have considered secondary. These are the remarkable plates with which his work was illustrated, particularly his famous Kunstformen. The Kunstformen contains 100 beautiful lithographic plates which show a multitude of unusual life forms: Radiolaria, Foraminifera, and other forms of microscopic life; jellyfishes, starfishes, calcareous sponges, star corals, barnacles, and other sea life; mosses, lichens, red algae, ferns, fungi, orchids, and other plants; and turtles, moths, spiders, bats, frogs, lizards, hummingbirds, and antelope. With many drawings on each plate, each carefully drawn from nature, the subtle details of nature's art forms are easily compared and appreciated. In addition to being marvelous renderings, these plates have long been noted for the peculiar emotional appeal that they have for most viewers, a premonition of surrealism with exotic organic life forms stretching back to their roots in the inorganic, and individual details drawn with awareness of subtle evolutionary changes and millennia-long developments. Artists, illustrators, and others will find them still powerful as one of the landmarks of applied art.The Graphic Works of Odilon Redon
By Odilon Redon. 1969
One of the most expressive artists of the Symbolism movement, Odilon (1840-1916) led a quiet life. Withdrawn in manner, conventional…
in dress, and virtually unknown for the first half of his career, the French painter and graphic artist drew upon his own startlingly complex and fantastic inner world to create haunting works that reveal an existence beyond that of everyday vision. He transformed common subjects and models into strange, eerie images and exhibited a predilection for spiders and serpents, skeletons and skulls, gnomes and monsters--all rendered in a distinctive style of controlled, delicate realism.Redon's popularity arose chiefly among young progressive artists, who considered his works as visual correspondence to the literary symbolism of Mallarmé. Modern devotees regard Redon's translation of the subconscious world of dreams into visual reality as a precursor to Surrealism. This modestly priced volume offers a rich compilation of the influential artist's graphic works, with 209 illustrations -- 72 lithographs, plus 37 etchings and engravings -- depicting unforgettable scenes of fantasy and mystery. The Codex Borgia: A Full-Color Restoration of the Ancient Mexican Manuscript
By Gisele D az, Alan Rodgers. 1993
Considered by many scholars the finest extant Mexican codex and one of the most important original sources for the study…
of pre-Columbian religion, the Codex Borgia is a work of profound beauty, filled with strange and evocative images related to calendrical, cosmological, ritual, and divinatory matters. Generally similar to such Mixtec manuscripts as the Codex Nuttall, the Codex Borgia is thought to have its origin (ca. A.D. 1400) in the southern central highlands of Mexico, perhaps in Puebla or Oaxaca. It is most probably a religious document that once belonged to a temple or sacred shrine. One use of the Codex many have been to divine the future, for it includes ritual 260 day calendars, material on aspects of the planet Venus, and a sort of numerological prognostic of the lives of wedded couples. Another section concerns various regions of the world and the supernatural characters and attributes of those regions. Also described are the characteristics of a number of deities, while still other passages relate to installation ceremonies of rulers in pre-Columbian kingdoms.Until the publication of this Dover edition, the Codex Borgia has been largely inaccessible to the general public. The priceless original is in the Vatican Library and previous photographic facsimiles are very rare or very expensive or both. Moreover, the original Codex has been damaged over the centuries, resulting in the obscuration and loss of many images. In order to recapture the beauty and grandeur of the original, Gisele Diaz and Alan Rodgers have painstakingly restored the Codex by hand-- a seven-year project -- employing the most scrupulous research and restoration techniques. The result is 76 large full-color plates of vibrant, striking depictions of gods, kings, warriors, mythical creatures, and mysterious abstract designs -- a vivid panorama that offers profound insights into pre-Columbian Mexican myth and ritual. Now students, anthropologists, lovers of fine art and rare books -- anyone interested in the art and culture of ancient Mexico -- can study the Codex Borgia in this inexpensive, accurate, well-made edition. An informative introduction by noted anthropologist Bruce E. Byland places the Codex in its historical context and helps elucidate its meaning and significance.Photo School Landscape: Landscape (Michael Freeman's Photo School Ser.)
