By Greg Marinovich, Joao Silva, Archbishop Desmond Tutu. 2000
The Pocket Encyclopedia of Aggravation is an A-to-Z illustrated compendium of everyday annoyances--from airline legroom, missing socks, and knuckle cracking…
to video buffering, telemarketers and internet trolls--complete with truly informative scientific explanations and wry commentary. This collection of 100 headaches, day-ruining events, moment destroying mishaps and infuriating everyday aggravations presents the fascinating facts behind the world's most frustrating situations. Laura Lee's dry, humorous and scientific text explains why fingernails on the chalkboard make you cringe; why people drive slowly in the fast lane; why dripping faucets annoy women more than men; why the other line is always faster than the one you are on; and more. She also gives tips on how to deal with annoying things like brain freeze, hangnails, and that coworker that wears too much perfume. Amazingly, some things are less annoying when you know the facts. By W. Lance Bennett. 2016
For over thirty years, News: The Politics of Illusion has not simply reflected the political communication field--it has played a…
major role in shaping it. Today, the familiar news organizations of the legacy press are operating in a fragmenting and expanding mediaverse that resembles a big bang of proliferating online competitors that are challenging the very definition of news itself. Audience-powered sites such as the Huffington Post and Vox blend conventional political reporting with opinion blogs, celebrity gossip, and other ephemera aimed at getting clicks and shares. At the same time, the rise of serious investigative organizations such as ProPublica presents yet a different challenge to legacy journalism. Lance Bennett's thoroughly revised tenth edition offers the most up-to-date guide to understanding how and why the media and news landscapes are being transformed. It explains the mix of old and new, and points to possible outcomes. Where areas of change are clearly established, key concepts from earlier editions have been revised. There are new case studies, updates on old favorites, and insightful analyses of how the new media system and novel kinds of information and engagement are affecting our politics. As always, News presents fresh evidence and arguments that invite new ways of thinking about the political information system and its place in democracy.Winston Churchill Reporting: Adventures of a Young War Correspondent

By Boban Arsenijević, Berit Gehrke, Rafael Marín. 2012
This detailed, perceptive addition to the linguistics literature analyzes the semantic components of event predicates, exploring their fine-grained elements as…
well as their agency in linguistic processing. The papers go beyond pure semantics to consider their varying influences of event predicates on argument structure, aspect, scalarity, and event structure. The volume shows how advances in the linguistic theory of event predicates, which have spawned Davidsonian and neo-Davidsonian notions of event arguments, in addition to 'event structure' frameworks and mereological models for the eventuality domain, have sidelined research on specific sets of entailments that support a typology of event predicates. Addressing this imbalance in the literature, the work also presents evidence indicating a more complex role for scalar structures than currently assumed. It will enrich the work of semanticists, psycholinguists, and syntacticians with a decompositional approach to verb phrase structure.Infographica

Quirky, irreverent, and visually appealing, this book is a must-have reference for anyone wishing to keep informed, as well as a primer on information design from the writing and design team of Martin and Simon Toseland. From the Trade Paperback edition.Dynamic Antisymmetry and the Syntax of Noun Incorporation
By Michael Barrie. 2010
This innovative analysis of noun incorporation and related linguistic phenomena does more than just give readers an insightful exploration of…
its subject. The author re-evaluates--and forges links between--two influential theories of phrase structure: Chomsky's Bare Phrase Structure and Richard Kayne's Antisymmetry. The text details how the two linguistic paradigms interact to cause differing patterns of noun incorporation across world languages. With a solid empirical foundation in its close reading of Northern Iroquoian languages especially, Barrie argues that noun incorporation needs no special mechanism, but results from a symmetry-breaking operation. Drawing additional data from English, German, Persian, Tamil and the Polynesian language Niuean, this synthesis has major implications for our understanding of the formation of the verbal complex and the intra-position (roll-up) movement. It will be priority reading for students of phrase structure, as well as Iroquoian language scholars. The Grammar of French Quantification
By Lena Baunaz. 2010
This book is the first extensive study on French Quantification in the field of Syntax. It provides a typology of…
four main quantified noun phrases in French (existential, universal, negative and wh-), detailing their syntactic, semantic and prosodic behaviors and showing that they can be reduced to two classes--Split-DP structures or Floating quantification. Relying on syntax and semantics, the book establishes a three-way structural typology of wh in-situ phrases and extends it to existentials. It pays special attention to the prosodic properties associated with their different readings and proposes an analysis of the distribution of subextraction and pied-piping. Similarly based on semantic and syntactic tests, the book reveals N(egative) words to be universal Quantifiers. It proposes a new structure of N-words in terms of constituent negation and includes a detailed analysis of the difference between not an N and not all the N in French.Friars Club Encyclopedia of Jokes: Revised and Updated! By Adrian Colesberry. 2009
A guidebook to seducing, satisfying, and loving the only man you'll ever needIn an act of generosity, Adrian Colesberry has…
written an exquisitely detailed guidebook to ensure that every reader knows precisely how to please him-in bed and beyond. Brimming with self-indulgent and incredibly bawdy humor, How to Make Love to Adrian Colesberry is a sexual memoir disguised as a manual on Colesberry's pet peeves, favorite positions, and surefire ways to turn on your man (aka Adrian Colesberry). Recounting dozens of annoying peccadilloes and helpful pro tips gleaned from his experiences with former lovers, Colesberry covers all corners to ensure that no stage of the court-and-conquer process is overlooked. Beginning with how to attract Colesberry, he later progresses to foreplay and finally the full monty, revealing his own erratic, often unerotic sexual history along the way. From his awkwardly celibate teenage years to the emotional scars inflicted by his domineering ex-wife, Colesberry muses on bondage, three-ways, toys, bi-curiosity, and other kinks. A pitch-perfect parody that spares no detail, How to Make Love to Adrian Colesberry is a hilarious and filthy new entrant into the fratire genre.Stuff Parisians Like
By Olivier Magny. 2011
In the tradition of the New York Times bestseller Stuff White People Like, a tongue-in-cheek homage to Parisians. To be…
mistaken for a Parisian, readers must buy the newspaper Le Monde, fold it, and walk. Then sit at a café and make phone calls. Be sure to order San Pellegrino, not any other kind of fizzy water. They shouldn't be surprised when a waiter brings out two spoons after they order le moelleux au chocolat- it is understood that the dessert is too sinfully delicious not to share. Go to l'île Saint-Louis-all Parisians are irredeemably in love with that island. Feel free to boldly cross the street whenever the impulse strikes-pedestrian crosswalks are too dangerous. If they take a cruise on the Seine, they will want to stand outside, preferably with their collar popped up. If they want to decorate, may we suggest the photographs of Robert Doisneau? To truly be cool in Paris, own an iPhone, wear Converse sneakers, and order sushi. And as they stroll through the Luxembourg Gardens, remember-they can't go wrong wearing black.George Alfred Townsend and Gathland: A Journalist and His Western Maryland Estate
By Dianne Wiebe. 2014
The youngest correspondent to cover the Civil War and a pioneer in newspaper syndication, George Alfred Townsend came from modest…
circumstances. Using the pen name of GATH, he rose to fame and fortune after the war, and his career brought him into contact with sitting presidents and luminaries such as Mark Twain. Though almost forgotten today in the canon of Maryland authors, GATH left a lasting legacy of literature and a most unique monument. He created a lavish summer estate near Boonsboro, Maryland, named Gapland--now called Gathland. He also famously erected the War Correspondents Memorial Arch, a monument to fellow wartime journalists. Today, GATH's estate is preserved and interpreted by a state park and its museums. His commanding arch remains a bold reminder of the creative genius of George Alfred Townsend. The Book of Useless Information
By Noel Botham. 2006
What you may so cavalierly call useless information could prove invaluable to someone else. Then again, maybe not. But to…
The Useless Information Society, any fact that passes its gasp-inducing, not-a-lot-of-people-know-that test merits inclusion in this fascinating but ultimately useless book. . . Did you know (or do you care). . . • That fish scales are used to make lipstick? • Why organized crime accounts for ten percent of the United States’s annual income? • The name of the first CD pressed in the United States? • The last year that can be written upside-down or right side-up and appear the same? • The shortest performance ever nominated for an Oscar®? • How much Elvis weighed at the time of his death? • What the suits in a deck of cards represent? • How many Quarter Pounders can be made from one cow? • How interesting useless information can be? The Book of Useless Information answers these teasers and is packed with facts and figures that will captivate you—and anyone who shares your joy in the pursuit of pointless knowledge. .Generation Vet
By Lisa Lanstraat, Sue Doe. 2014
Institutions of higher education are experiencing the largest influx of enrolled veterans since World War II, and these student veterans…
are transforming post-secondary classroom dynamics. While many campus divisions like admissions and student services are actively moving to accommodate the rise in this demographic, little research about this population and their educational needs is available, and academic departments have been slower to adjust. In Generation Vet, fifteen chapters offer well-researched, pedagogically savvy recommendations for curricular and programmatic responses to student veterans for English and writing studies departments. In work with veterans in writing-intensive courses and community contexts, questions of citizenship, disability, activism, community-campus relationships, and retention come to the fore. Moreover, writing-intensive courses can be sites of significant cultural exchanges--even clashes--as veterans bring military values, rhetorical traditions, and communication styles that may challenge the values, beliefs, and assumptions of traditional college students and faculty. This classroom-oriented text addresses a wide range of issues concerning veterans, pedagogy, rhetoric, and writing program administration. Written by diverse scholar-teachers and written in diverse genres, the essays in this collection promise to enhance our understanding of student veterans, composition pedagogy and administration, and the post-9/11 university. You Are Good at Things: A Checklist

Handily arranged in checklist format, particularly useful for those readers good at making lists, this is a celebration of all…
the little things that the human race excels at. Affirmation comes for those who can finish other people's sentences, fall asleep on public transport, fix the toilet merely by jiggling the handle, remember what used to be somewhere and sit through the end of film credits.
