"This bestseller in Puerto Rico is the complete story of the only revolution against the United States, told from the…
perspective of Comandante Elio Torresola, who led the rebel forces to victory during El Grito de Jayuya. In 1950, Puerto Rican nationalists stunned the world when they succeeded in destroying the international image of the United States as the 'Champion of Democracy' by declaring the Republic of Puerto Rico and extending the reach of the rebellion into the heartland of the United States through a direct attack on President Truman. |Times of Upheaval| is the product of a three-year investigation by a journalist who delved into personal and official documents, including the FBI's so-called Secret Files on Puerto Rico, newspapers, books and theses at the University of Puerto Rico, and interviews with witnesses to the events, as well as with the revolutionaries and their families." -- Translation provided by NLSAs a sequel to Gold in Trib 1, Doug's new book, Mystery in Trib 2 is an interesting blend of…
fact and fiction; factual in terms of the flying, hiking, and gold-mining two friends enjoyed; fictional in the form of a cleverly woven mystery concerning the loss of a World War II military aircraft. The story is well researched and so masterfully formulated the reader will be hard pressed to separate historical fact from fiction. Mystery in Trib 2 portrays wilderness Alaska accurately and as it can be experienced by anyone fired with a lust for outdoor adventure.War Cantata / Child Object
By Chantal Bilodeau, Larry Tremblay, Keith Turnbull. 2011
War Cantata translated by Keith TurnbullHow far will humanity go in its quest for power? Why do we desire to…
eliminate each other through war? War Cantata looks at ways the impulse for violence is transmitted from one generation to the next; for example, when a father teaches his son hatred to transform him into a soldier impervious to pity. Without focusing on a particular battle or soldier, this harsh, intense, choral text builds the rhythmic power of words to expose war's spiral toward hatred. In 2012, SACD (Société des auteurs et compositeurs dramatiques), in partnership with France Culture, awarded War Cantata the Prix SADC for best world play written in French, and CEAD (Centre des auteurs dramatiques) awarded it the Prix Michel-Tremblay for the best play written in Quebec in 2012.Cast of 2 men and a chorusChild Object translated by Chantal BilodeauWith child as a blank page, a man sets about constructing his ideal companion manipulating personality, gender, and body. something new. The playwright combines a lyrical ear with a sophisticated sense of structure to trace the legacy of war through three generations of a Puerto Rican family. Without ever invoking politics, Elliot, a Soldier's Fugue manages to be a deeply poetic, touching and often funny indictment of the war in Iraq."-The New York TimesFrom Quiara Alegría Hudes, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Water by the Spoonful, comes this companion play, itself a Pulitzer finalist. In a crumbling urban lot that has been converted into a verdant sanctuary, a young Marine comes to terms with his father's service in Vietnam as he decides whether to leave for a second tour of duty in Iraq.Melding a poetic dreamscape with a stream-of-consciousness narrative, Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue takes us on an unforgettable journey across time and generations, lyrically tracing the legacy of war on a single Puerto Rican family.Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue, a finalist for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize, is the first installment in a trilogy of plays that follow Elliot's return from Iraq. The second play, Water by the Spoonful, received the 2012 Pulitzer Prize and will be published by Theatre Communications Group concurrently with Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue. By Douglas Anderson. 1997
Gold in Trib 1 is an account of a flying, hiking, and gold prospecting adventure in wild, present-day Alaska. It…
is the story of the exploits of two good friends and their adventures while prospecting for gold. It is a factual account where possible and where not factual, it is the way they would have liked it. As a result, readers will enjoy the book for what it is, and will not take it so seriously as to dash off with expectations of finding their fortune. There is still much gold in Alaska, but Douglas may have made discovering the Glory Hole, wherever it may be, sound somewhat easier and more financially rewarding than it really was.City of Jasmine

By José Miguel Tomasena. 2019
The New York Times Happy Birthday Wanda June was Kurt Vonnegut&’s first play, which premiered in New York in 1970 and was then adapted into a film in 1971. It is a darkly humorous and searing examination of the excesses of capitalism, patriotism, toxic masculinity, and American culture in the post-Vietnam War era. Featuring behind-the-scenes photographs from the original stage production, this play captures Vonnegut&’s brilliantly distinct perspective unlike we have ever seen it before. &“A great artist.&”—The Cincinnati EnquirerHijos del miedo

By Joan Sales. 2017
"Perhaps the worst thing about war is the peace that follows . . ."Winds of the Night is the follow-up,…
published almost thirty years later, to Joan Sales' acclaimed masterwork of the Spanish Civil War, Uncertain Glory. It describes the shell-shocked wasteland that was post-war Catalonia through the eyes of Cruells, a Republican chaplain who survives the war, and completes his theological studies only to lose his faith in a world where it seems all hope has been extinguished. As he struggles to function as a rural priest, his steps are dogged by a ghostly figures from his past, such as Lamoneda, a fascist agent provocateur who now hobnobs with Himmler and misses few opportunities to turn the febrile post-war atmosphere to his financial advantage. Against his wishes, Creulls is drawn into obsessive dialogues about the war in which only lunacy prevails, for Lamoneda seems to hold the key to the whereabouts of an old friend - the mercurial Juli Soleràs, whose charisma, for all his betrayals, still holds Cruells in thrall. An essential coda to the modern classic that is Uncertain Glory, Winds of the Night is a Beckettian vision of the traumas of combatants and country hidden beneath the rhetoric of the victors.Translated from the Catalan by Peter BushMy Adventurous Friend: A Lifetime of Choices and Outdoor Alaska Adventures
By Anderson Douglas. 2015
My Adventurous Friend is based on accounts of my friend Hagen's life, as he related it to me, and of…
the adventures we enjoyed together in Alaska. We would reminisce while sitting around a campfire in some wilderness area during our hikes and gold prospecting ventures. We could be debating current events and somehow our talk would drift back to events of earlier times. Over the years, piece by piece, I learned almost everything there was to know about my friend. Hagen had a varied and adventurous life beginning in wartime Germany and, by a circuitous route, eventually migrated to Alaska in 1973. Hagen had a longing for adventure and was never satisfied with the status-quo. He was strong, tenacious and once his mind was made up he would seldom deviate. In his mind, if it wasn't difficult then it wasn't worth doing. He always said he was born one hundred years too late to be a real pioneer but he sure did his best to emulate them. Hiking to our gold claim--forty miles from the nearest gravel road--and making it there alone in the dead of the Alaska winter was almost enough to satisfy his craving for adventure.Representing: Reminiscences; Humorous and Otherwise, of an Alaska Based Company Service Representative
By Douglas Anderson. 2015
Douglas Anderson, the author, was born in Derbyshire, England. After his father passed away, Douglas went to live on his…
Grandfather's farm. Never very interested in animal husbandry, he leaned more toward the mechanical aspects of farming: maintaining and operating machinery. After an apprenticeship in the mechanical field, Douglas joined Rolls-Royce and began an interesting and diverse career. In the ensuing years, that career encompassed: jet engines, rocket engines and industrial gas turbines. Douglas immigrated to Canada in 1967, to the USA in 1977 and back to Canada in 2001. An adventurous fourteen years while supporting RR products in Alaska prompted Douglas to write and to become a published author. For many years, Anderson traveled and represented the company. Representing covers those years and some of the situations, humorous and otherwise, that he and his fellow Reps encountered at home base and at far-away places. The characters are real and these events actually happened as described. Most are documented for the first time in Representing. The Armies: Winner of the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize

Origins of Terrorism: The Rise of the World’s Most Formidable Terrorist Groups examines the roots of Islamic terrorism, it’s history,…
and some of the foundational figures in prominent terrorist organizations. Throughout, the book also addresses the use of terrorism, the "hows" and "whys" of terrorists’ goals, and their modus operandi.Historically, insurgency operations have formed the basis of a number of terrorist groups—resistance to western powers, particularly the United States, and what is viewed as their unwanted interference in regional affairs. Sections are devoted to individual terror organizations, including some of the most well-known and resilient global movements—Al Qaeda, ISIS, the Taliban, and Boko Haram, among others. Coverage details where and how they originated, who the principal organizers were, how these individuals worked—or didn’t work—together. In this, the authors look at the circumstances that allowed for these leaders, and their groups’, development and success. In this, the authors expose interesting, little-known stories and facts about the specific upbringing, family life, and personal narrative around these organizations’ founders, as well as ties to other terrorist founders and organizations. For example, the relationship between individuals such as Osama bin Laden and Musab al Zarkawi (aka Ahmad al-Khalayleh)—the founder of ‘Al Qaeda in Iraq’ (AQI), which became ISIS—is examined in detail, providing readers with some of the "stories behind the stories" to understand the prominent figures and underpinnings of major terrorist organizations’ philosophies, formation, and elements that have led to their staying power.Origins of Terrorism will be a valuable resource for security and intelligence professionals, terrorism researchers, and students, providing a unique perspective to understand terrorism and terror movements in considering counterterror efforts.
