This book examines Thomas De Quincey's notion of the unconscious in the light of modern cognitive science and nineteenth-century science.…
It challenges Freudian theories as the default methodology in order to understand De Quincey's oeuvre and the unconscious in literature more generally.Drawing on a detailed case study of Scotland's National Health Service, this book argues that debates about citizen participation in…
health systems are disproportionately dominated by techniques of invited participation. A 'system's-eye' perspective, while often well-intentioned, has blinded us to other standpoints for understanding the complex relationship between publics and their health systems. Publics and Their Health Systems takes a 'citizen's-eye' perspective, exploring not only conventional invited participation, but also the realms of representative democracy, contentious protest politics, and the micro-level tactics used by individual citizens in their encounters with health services. The book highlights more oppositional dynamics than those which characterise much invited participation, and argues that understanding these is a crucial step towards a more inclusive and democratic health system. The European Football Championship: Mega-Event and Vanity Fair (Football Research in an Enlarged Europe)

By Susan Hiller. 1900
This book explores the fusion of myth, history and geography which leads to ideas of primitivism, and looks at their…
construction, interpretation and consumption in Western culture. Contextualized by Susan Hiller's introductions to each section, discussions range from the origins of cultural colonialism to eurocentric ideas of primitive societies, including the use of primitive culture in constructing national identities, and the appropriation of primitivist imagery in modernist art. The result is a controversial critique of art theory, practice and politics, and a major enquiry into the history of primitivism and its implications for contemporary culture.Globalisation, Global Justice and Social Work
By Michael Lavalette, Iain Ferguson, Elizabeth Whitmore. 2005
Globalization has become a seemingly unstoppable force over recent decades and, in its wake, global notions of social justice have…
developed in response to its negative aspects. Neo-liberal economic policies have been a key element in the wider process of globalization, and these policies have had a profound impact on welfare provision and the shape of social work practice. Arising dissatisfaction among users of welfare and social work services is fuelling the search for a new, more radical social work that is firmly rooted in principles of social justice. Globalisation, Global Justice and Social Work explores the global effects of neo-liberal policies on welfare services in different countries, with contributions from social work academics, practitioners and welfare activists around the world. The first section of the book presents case studies of impact of neo-liberalism on welfare systems, social service provision and the practice of social work. In the second section the chapters explore the relationship between social work practice and the struggle for social justice. Authors discuss the personal and political dilemmas they have had to address in seeking to link a personal commitment to social justice with their daily practice as workers and educators in social work. The final section assesses the prospects for social work practice based on notions of social justice, by looking at what can be learned from the experience of previous radical movements as well as from emergent global and local movements.Curators of Cultural Enterprise: A Critical Analysis of a Creative Business Intermediary

By Christine Mayer, Adelina Arredondo. 2020
This edited collection addresses the nexus of gender, power relations, and education from various angles while covering a broad spectrum…
of the history of education in both time and geographic space. Taking the position that historians of gender and education find the concept of transnationalism very useful for a deeper understanding of historical change and situations, the editors and their contributors employ a transnational perspective to explore the complex and entangled dimensions of a history of education that transcends regional and national boundaries through a variety of approaches (e.g. through exploring new fields of research, sources, questions, perspectives for interpretation, or methodologies). In doing so, they also undertake to open up a transnational global perspective for the historiography of education.Current Trends in Dynamical Systems in Biology and Natural Sciences (SEMA SIMAI Springer Series #21)

By Sara Geenen, Boris Verbrugge. 2020
In recent decades, gold mining has moved into increasingly remote corners of the globe. Aside from the expansion of industrial…
gold mining, many countries have simultaneously witnessed an expansion of labor-intensive and predominantly informal artisanal and small-scale gold mining. Both trends are usually studied in isolation, which contributes to a dominant image of a dual gold mining economy. Counteracting this dominant view, this volume adopts a global perspective, and demonstrates that both industrial gold mining and artisanal and small-scale gold mining are functionally integrated into a global gold production system. It couples an analysis of structural trends in global gold production (expansion, informalization, and technological innovation) to twelve country case studies that detail how global gold production becomes embedded in institutional and ecological structures.'Der lange Sommer der Revolte': Soziale Arbeit und Pädagogik in den frühen 1970er Jahren

By Louise Waite, Gary Craig, Hannah Lewis, Klara Skrivankova. 2015
Globalization, the economic crisis and related policies of austerity have led to a growth in extreme exploitation at work, with…
migrants particularly vulnerable. This book explores the lives of the growing numbers of severely exploited labourers in the world today, questioning how we can respond to such globalized patterns of extreme inequality. The authors investigate the phenomenon of highly skilled Chinese returnees and their impact on the development of the Chinese economy…
and society, and on the transformation of China into a key player on the global stage. They analyse the reasons why Chinese entrepreneurs choose to return to their native country and how their overseas experience shapes their attitude and behaviours. This study is solidly grounded on fresh data from online and offline surveys and on evidence collected in over 200 interviews of successful returnees entrepreneurs. These global Chinese returnees have contributed to the rise of Chinese economy into a global powerhouse and this continuing brain movement and circulation will have much more future implications and impact for China's exchange with outside world. The 'Civil Society' Problematique: Deconstructing Civility and Southern Nigeria's Ethnic Radicalization (African Studies)

By Kerrie Foxwell-Norton, Joana Díaz-Pont, Pieter Maeseele, Annika Egan Sjölander, Maitreyee Mishra. 2020
This volume interrogates the intertwining of the local and the digital in environmental communication. It starts by introducing a wave…
metaphor to tease out major shifts in the field, and situates the intersections of local places and digital networks in the beginning of a third wave. Investigations that feature the centrality of place and digital communication platforms show how we today, as researchers and practitioners, communicate the environment. Contributions identify the need for critical approaches that engage with the wider consequences of this changing media landscape, unpacking local and global tensions in environmental communication research. This empirical case study collection from different parts of the world shows that environmental activists and citizens creatively use digital technologies for campaign purposes. It identifies new environmental communication challenges and opportunities, as well as practices, of environmental activists, NGOs, citizens and local communities, in the fight for social and environmental justice.Education and Development: Outcomes for Equality and Governance in Africa
By N’Dri T. Assié-Lumumba, Muna B. Ndulo. 2020
This edited volume addresses a critical aspect of development in Africa: the intersection between education and governance. Using case studies and…
experiences from different parts of the continent, this book assesses how the potential for human resources, in terms of education, can be leveraged in the development process to achieve equity, inclusive development and governance outcomes in Africa. This book builds on the "resource curse" to focus on human resources as an alternative paradigm to sustainable development in Africa. At a time when concerns over access to quality education is an important issue among policy makers and international development agents, this timely project calls attention to one of the most critical aspects of development in Africa.Theory of Translation Closedness for Time Scales: With Applications in Translation Functions and Dynamic Equations (Developments in Mathematics #62)
By Ravi P. Agarwal, Chao Wang, Rathinasamy Sakthivel, Donal O' Regan. 2020
This monograph establishes a theory of classification and translation closedness of time scales, a topic that was first studied by…
S. Hilger in 1988 to unify continuous and discrete analysis. The authors develop a theory of translation function on time scales that contains (piecewise) almost periodic functions, (piecewise) almost automorphic functions and their related generalization functions (e.g., pseudo almost periodic functions, weighted pseudo almost automorphic functions, and more). Against the background of dynamic equations, these function theories on time scales are applied to study the dynamical behavior of solutions for various types of dynamic equations on hybrid domains, including evolution equations, discontinuous equations and impulsive integro-differential equations. The theory presented allows many useful applications, such as in the Nicholson`s blowfiles model; the Lasota-Wazewska model; the Keynesian-Cross model; in those realistic dynamical models with a more complex hibrid domain, considered under different types of translation closedness of time scales; and in dynamic equations on mathematical models which cover neural networks. This book provides readers with the theoretical background necessary for accurate mathematical modeling in physics, chemical technology, population dynamics, biotechnology and economics, neural networks, and social sciences.Time Series Econometrics: A Concise Introduction (Palgrave Texts in Econometrics)

By Natalia Konstantinovskaia. 2020
This book conducts a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural study of 'women’s language' as it pertains to feminine beauty. It examines the…
ideological constructs of beauty and femininity in the cultures of Japan and Russia, as embodied through televised beauty ads, and relates them to the real-world language practices of Japanese and Russian women. The author traces the reciprocal connection between women’s real and imagined language in the construction of ideals of beauty and femininity, revealing the complex ways women respond to ideological expectations regarding language use: assimilating, transforming, and subverting ideologized language and the assumptions implicit in it. She also demonstrates ways in which women alter the texture of language by appropriating 'masculine' language for their own purposes, shifting the meaning and correlates of linguistic items and structures. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of sociolinguistics, language and gender, cultural and media studies, and Russian and Japanese culture.
