For elite athletes, pain and injury are normal. In a challenge to the orthodox medical model, this book makes it…
clear that pain and injury cannot be understood in terms of physiology alone, and examines the influence of social and cultural processes on how athletes experience pain and injury. It raises a series of key social and ethical questions about the culture of 'playing hurt', the role of coaches and medical staff, the deliberate infliction of pain in sport, and the use of drugs. This book begins by providing three different perspectives on the topic of pain and injury in sport, and goes on to discuss: * pain, injury and performance * the deliberate infliction of pain and injury * the management of pain and injury * the meaning of pain and injury.Sport and the English, 1918-1939: Between the Wars (Modern Grammar Workbooks Ser.)

taking in a wide range of themes and covering every activity from aerobics to zorbing. However, in comparison to most mainstream histories, sport history has rarely been called upon to question its foundations and account for the basis of its historical knowledge. In this book, Booth offers a rigorous assessment of sport history as an academic discipline, exploring the ways in which professional historians can gather materials, construct and examine evidence, and present their arguments about the sporting past. Part 1 examines theories of knowledge, while Part 2 goes on to scrutinize the uses of historical knowledge in popular and academic studies of sport history. With clear structure, examples, summary tables and a detailed glossary, The Field provides students, teachers and researchers with an unparalleled resource to tackle issues fundamental to the future of their subject, and sets the agenda for the debate to come.Japan, Sport and Society: Tradition and Change in a Globalizing World (Sport in the Global Society)

Serious Leisure: A Perspective for Our Time (Leisure Studies In A Global Era Ser.)
By Robert A. Stebbins. 2006
Serious Leisure offers a comprehensive view and analysis of the current state of the sociology of leisure. Defining and differentiating…
the way people use their free time, Stebbins divides such activity into categories of serious, casual, and project-based leisure that he further separates into a variety of types and subtypes. Together they comprise what he calls serious leisure. In this perspective, serious leisure constitutes systematic pursuit of an amateur, hobbyist, or volunteer activity sufficiently substantial and interesting in nature and requiring special skills, knowledge, and experience. Casual leisure, though immediately, intrinsically rewarding, is by contrast a relatively short-lived pleasurable activity, requiring little or no special training to enjoy it. Project-based leisure is a short-term, reasonably complicated, occasional creative undertaking carried out in free time. Stebbins sets out the basic concepts and propositions that make up the three forms, focusing on their essential elements. He takes stock of the serious leisure literature as well as that for casual and project-based leisure.Stebbins sees serious leisure realized by way of a set of foundational concepts--organization, community, history, lifestyle, and culture--and several of their component areas. He reviews the history and background of the concept of serious leisure and then adds historical commentary on, first, casual leisure and, then, project-based leisure. Finally, he examines the future and the importance of the serious leisure perspective in a globalizing world, and some of its critical links with other fields of knowledge and practice, notably the nonprofit sector and preventive medicine.Together with its original insights, Serious Leisure offers a single, handy, coherent, comprehensive resource. It will be of interest to sociologists, labor studies specialists, and economists.Rugby Union Basics In A Day For Dummies (In A Day For Dummies)

By Joan Ryan. 2020
From baseball to biology, an award-winning journalist highlights the power of team chemistry in this "terrific" data-driven investigation of human…
relationships (Billie Jean King).Does team chemistry actually exist? Is there scientific or mathematical proof? Is team chemistry as real and relevant as on-base percentages and wins above replacement? In Joan Ryan's groundbreaking book we discover that the answer to all of the above is a resounding yes. As Ryan puts it, team chemistry, or the combination of biological and social forces that boosts selfless effort among more players over more days of a season, is what drives sports teams toward a common goal, encouraging the players to be the best versions of themselves. These are the elements of teams that make them "click," the ones that foster trust and respect, and push players to exceed their own potential when they work well together.Team chemistry alone won't win a World Series, but talent alone won't win it, either. And by interviewing more than 100 players, coaches, managers, and statisticians, as well as over five years of extensive research in neuroscience, biology, physiology, and psychology, Ryan proves that the social and emotional state of a team does affect performance. Grit, passion, selflessness, and effort matter -- but never underestimate the power of chemistry.Sleeping Bags to S'mores: Camping Basics
