After her years in domestic service, Winifred Foley married and started a family. But, while scraping a living as a…
charwoman in a rundown north London tenement, she continued to long for her home in the Forest of Dean and the cherished relatives she had left behind. Determined to give their children the rural upbringing she had enjoyed, the young couple moved to an isolated, crumbling cottage not far from the Forest. But even in the 1950s they lacked heating or running water, and money was tight. Food was begged, borrowed or home-grown, and their clothes were hand-me-downs. It was a primitive life of hard work on the land, struggling to make ends meet, and finding strength in the embrace of a loving family.Motherhood and Hollywood

funeral—that you won an Emmy once, or that you were a good person, kind and generous? Well, as for me, I hope it's the latter. And the fact that I recently commissioned an Emmy-shaped coffin just eliminates the need for anyone to bring it up. ” Everybody knows that Patricia Heaton plays the hilarious, wise, and tempestuous married-with-kids everywoman onEverybody Loves Raymond. What they might not know is that in real life she is married, has four boys under eight years old, and is just as funny offscreen as on. Motherhood and Hollywoodis Patricia Heaton’s humorous and poignant collection of essays on life, love, marriage, child-rearing, show business, having parents, being a parent, spousal rage, surviving fame, success, and the shame of underarm flab. She is warm, witty, and refreshingly irreverent. Heaton grew up in suburban Cleveland, one of five children of devout Roman Catholic parents. Her father was a noted sportswriter forThe Plain Dealer; her mother died suddenly and unexpectedly when Heaton was twelve. Love, fast food, and an unflagging sense of humor held the clan together and propelled Patricia on a showbiz career that began with hilariously nightmarish struggles in New York, eventually leading to a triumphant move to Los Angeles. InMotherhood and Hollywood, Patricia Heaton pours out her heart and minces no words. She’s taking all prisoners for cookies and a glass of Jack Daniel’s and diet ginger ale. Laughter ensues.Michael Buble: The Biography

By Sumit Chakraberty. 2014
Master Laster takes you beyond Sachin Tendulkar s career aggregates and passionate assertions …
There are almost as many books about Sachin Tendulkar as there are centuries by him But just as there is only one Tendulkar century that came in a winning run chase in the last innings of a Test match rare are the books that look at his personal records through the prism of how much they mattered to the team In fact there are none because the easiest thing to do is to produce adulatory tomes for his doting fans But there are an equal number of cricket fans out there who want to know something more than gushing accolades and who don t shy away from asking difficult questions The book covers 1 a quarter of a century of Indian cricket bringing back to life many a game played during Tendulkar s time 2 it indulges fans in one of the enduring joys of cricket discussing a point threadbare from multiple angles 3 how many of his centuries made a difference to the team 4 what is his track record under pressure None of the books on Tendulkar has engaged fans in these debates There is the odd question raised here or a critical comment made there in memoirs by former cricketers but not a single book that sifts through the mountain of Tendulkar records to see what value can be attached to them from a team s point of view An exercise like that can be quite revealing even startling and certainly a lot of fun for cricket lovers It sets the Tendulkar debate against specific data taking it beyond career aggregates and passionate assertions Master Laster covers the variables in the game and its infinite possibilities It also deals with why this game is so fascinates so many of usThe Manager: The Absurd Ascent of the Most Important Man in Football
By Barney Ronay. 2010
Ever since the dawn of the professional era, the beautiful game's most intriguing individual has been inching his way from…
the boot room towards the back pages. Along the way he has shared in the preoccupations of the nation - from conflicts and economic crises, to a fascination with fashion and a wholly unhealthy interest in celebrity. This book traces the remarkable journey of the football gaffer, from his humble beginnings as club secretary, to his modern incarnation - the man we all recognise, venting his spleen at the ref, or having a huff at a post-match press conference. THE MANAGER takes the reader beyond the well-worn anecdotes, deeper into the stories of football's top men and the world they inhabit. Barney Ronay asks the important questions about these compelling characters - Where did they come from? Why are they so miserable? Where do they get their suits? Hilarious and absorbing, this book contains enough revelations to provide the most avid fan with a library of fresh tales. You'll never look at the man on the touchline in the same way again.Fields of Courage: The Bravest Chapters in Sport

barrier, or defying career-threatening injuries, in quest of victory. Ben Hogan, Jackie Robinson, Marcus Trescothick, Billie-Jean King, Eric Lidell . . . Max Davidson's cavalcade of sporting heroism celebrates virtues that transcend winning and losing -- and explains why sport at its best is so inspirational.Climbing the Bookshelves: The Autobiography of Shirley Williams

House of Commons. As well as being influenced by her mother, Vera Brittian, her father George Caitlin, a leading political scientist, encouraged his daughter to have high ambitions for herself - including daring to climb the bookshelves in his library. Elected as MP for Hitchin in 1964, she was a member of the Wilson and Callaghan governments and was also the Secretary of State for Education. As one of the 'Gang of Four' Shirley Williams famously broke away from the Labour Party to found the SDP in 1981 and later supported its merger with the Liberal Party to form the Liberal Democrats. By Paul W. Glimcher. 2003
Winner in the category of Medical Science in the 2003 Professional/Scholarly Publishing Annual Awards Competition presented by the Association of…
American Publishers, Inc. In this provocative book, Paul Glimcher argues that economic theory may provide an alternative to the classical Cartesian model of the brain and behavior. Glimcher argues that Cartesian dualism operates from the false premise that the reflex is able to describe behavior in the real world that animals inhabit. A mathematically rich cognitive theory, he claims, could solve the most difficult problems that any environment could present, eliminating the need for dualism by eliminating the need for a reflex theory. Such a mathematically rigorous description of the neural processes that connect sensation and action, he explains, will have its roots in microeconomic theory. Economic theory allows physiologists to define both the optimal course of action that an animal might select and a mathematical route by which that optimal solution can be derived. Glimcher outlines what an economics-based cognitive model might look like and how one would begin to test it empirically. Along the way, he presents a fascinating history of neuroscience. He also discusses related questions about determinism, free will, and the stochastic nature of complex behavior.Planes, Trains and Automobiles: Why Men Like Things that Go

Winner of the 2011 MCC Cricket Book of the Year, it is about the little clubs that have, down the years, produced some of the greatest players Britain has ever seen, and at one time spent a fortune on importing the biggest names in the international game to boost their battle for local supremacy.Slipless in Settle is a warm, affectionate and outrageously funny sporting odyssey in which Andrew Flintoff and Learie Constantine rub shoulders with Asbo-tag-wearing all-rounders, there's hot-pot pie and mushy peas at the tea bar, two types of mild in the clubhouse, and a batsman is banned for a month for wearing a fireman's helmet when going out to face Joel Garner . . .Tehran, Lipstick and Loopholes

By Frederick Lewis Allen. 1935
Three acclaimed chronicles of American life from a New York Times–bestselling author with a “style that is verve itself” (The…
New York Times). In these three popular histories of America—collectively ranging from the turn of the century through the 1930s—Frederick Lewis Allen confirms his reputation as one of the most influential journalists of the twentieth century and a “diligent and perceptive reporter” (Forbes). Only Yesterday: Allen’s bestselling account of the Roaring Twenties begins at the end of World War I and continues through Prohibition, the Big Red Scare, and the stock market crash of 1929. Originally published in 1931, the definitive account of twentieth-century America combines the immediacy of firsthand experience with clear-cut analysis. This iconic history sold over half a million copies in its first year of publication, reaching commercial and critical success unheard of during the Depression. Since Yesterday: Allen’s bestselling follow-up to Only Yesterday begins with America’s plunge into the Great Depression. With wit and empathy, Allen chronicles the 1930s from the Lindbergh kidnapping to the New Deal, from bank closures and devastating dust storms to the rise of Benny Goodman and our mass escape to the movies. The Lords of Creation: Allen’s history of American finance from the Reconstruction Era to the start of the Great Depression is a fascinating story of bankers, railroad tycoons, steel magnates, and robber barons. From the unprecedented corporate expansion that followed the Civil War, Allen traces a path of innovation and exploitation that put America’s fortunes in the hands of the Rockefellers, Fords, Vanderbilts, and other wealthy industrialists who set the stage for the most devastating financial collapse in history. The Red Sweet Wine of Youth: The Brave and Brief Lives of the War Poets
By Nicholas Murray. 2012
The poetry that emerged from the trenches of WWI is a remarkable body of work, at once political manifesto and…
literary beacon for the twentieth century. In this passionate recreation of the lives of the greatest poets to come out of the conflict, Nicholas Murray brilliantly reveals the men themselves as well as the struggle of the artist to live fully and to bear witness in the annihilating squalor of battle.Bringing into sharp focus the human detail of each life, using journals, letters and literary archives, Murray brings to life the men's indissoluble comradeship, their complex sexual mores and their extraordinary courage. Poignant, vivid and unfailingly intelligent, Nicholas Murray's study offers new and finely tuned insight into the - often devastatingly brief - lives of a remarkable generation of men.Winifred Foley grew up in the 1920s, a bright, determined miner's daughter - in a world of unspoilt beauty and…
desperate hardship, in which women were widowed at thirty and children died of starvation. Living hand-to-mouth in a tumbledown cottage in the Forest of Dean, Foley - 'our Poll' - had a loving family and the woods and streams of a forest 'better than heaven' as a playground. But a brother and sister were dead in infancy, bread had to be begged from kindly neighbours and she never had a new pair of shoes or a shop-bought doll. And most terrible of all, like her sister before her, at fourteen little Poll had to leave her beloved forest for the city, bound for a life in service among London's grey terraces.Loving Peter: My Life with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore
By Judy Cook, Angela Levin. 2009
Judy Huxtable, a beautiful Swinging Sixties model and actress, met and fell in love with Peter Cook in 1967. They…
were together during the memorable hit shows 'Behind the Fridge' and 'Derek and Clive', divorcing in 1989. Being intimate with Peter meant that Judy was inevitably close to Peter's comic partner, Dudley Moore, and they all formed an extraordinary bond. She was in a unique position to observe the special relationship that Peter and Dud shared, and the rivalry that existed between them.In LOVING PETER, Judy gives a perceptive and poignant account of the Peter Cook that only she knew. She writes with a mix of humour, insight and sadness about one of the funniest, most enigmatic and troubled men on the planet. She describes what he was like as a husband, performer, friend, father and man and gives an inside view of what really made him tick; why he seemed to want to destroy those he loved the most; how he succumbed to the destructive forces of drink and drugs; and how he and Dudley really got on.
