The Manager: The Absurd Ascent of the Most Important Man in Football
By Barney Ronay. 2010
Ever since the dawn of the professional era, the beautiful game's most intriguing individual has been inching his way from…
the boot room towards the back pages. Along the way he has shared in the preoccupations of the nation - from conflicts and economic crises, to a fascination with fashion and a wholly unhealthy interest in celebrity. This book traces the remarkable journey of the football gaffer, from his humble beginnings as club secretary, to his modern incarnation - the man we all recognise, venting his spleen at the ref, or having a huff at a post-match press conference. THE MANAGER takes the reader beyond the well-worn anecdotes, deeper into the stories of football's top men and the world they inhabit. Barney Ronay asks the important questions about these compelling characters - Where did they come from? Why are they so miserable? Where do they get their suits? Hilarious and absorbing, this book contains enough revelations to provide the most avid fan with a library of fresh tales. You'll never look at the man on the touchline in the same way again.Fields of Courage: The Bravest Chapters in Sport
By Max Davidson. 2012
The history of sport is littered with tales of exemplary courage: sportsmen and women pushing their bodies through the pain…

From the goalkeeper who played in a FA Cup Final with a broken neck to the batsman who saved a Test match with his arm in plaster, their heroics have inspired generations of schoolchildren. But courage is as much a moral as a physical attribute. Some of the most inspiring chapters in sport feature men and women of principle who have challenged authority, fought prejudice or simply had the guts to confess to weaknesses that went against the grain of their profession. Ben Hogan, Jackie Robinson, Marcus Trescothick, Billie-Jean King, Eric Lidell . . . Max Davidson's cavalcade of sporting heroism celebrates virtues that transcend winning and losing -- and explains why sport at its best is so inspirational.Planes, Trains and Automobiles: Why Men Like Things that Go

By Max Davidson. 2009
From Ancient Greece to the Beijing Olympics, sport has delivered thrilling victories and gut-wrenching defeats, but moments of good sportsmanship…
are increasingly rare. Is chivalry dead? Or have rumours of its demise been exaggerated? Whether displayed by an Australian sculler or an Egyptian judoka, sportsmanship has come in many guises. By E. T. Smith. 2002
PLAYING HARD BALL is a unique sports book, a cultural comparison of two national games - cricket, English in origin…
and American baseball - written from the viewpoint of a top-class practitioner of both codes. Ed Smith - the young Cambridge University and Kent batsman - has spent the winters since 1998 in Spring Training with the New York Mets baseball team. It has enabled Ed to contrast and compare arguably the two most iconic of sports from the inside. In fact, baseball had a thriving following in Britain until the Great War: Derby County's former stadium was called the Baseball Ground; Tottenham Hotspur was at first a baseball club. Apart from learning two very different techniques, Ed learned that the sports' ultimate heroes, the Babe and the Don - Babe Ruth and Don Bradman - might as well have come from different planets, whilst baseball's pristine Hall of Fame in Cooperstown is a far cry from the ramshackle cricket museum at Lord's. Ed Smith's PLAYING HARD BALL draws on these intriguing comparisons to paint a two-sided portrait of sports most illustrous 'hitting games'.Football Hooligans

Finally, Dougie Brimson asks if the police are not just another 'firm', simply participants in the violence.North Carolina Ski Resorts
By Donna Gayle Akers. 2014
During the early 1960s, local leaders in western and northwestern North Carolina were dedicated to developing winter recreational opportunities in…
the mountains. North Carolina's ski industry dates back to the winter of 1961-1962, when the Cataloochee resort in Maggie Valley developed the first ski slope in the state. Once thought impossible to make snow south of the Mason-Dixon Line, technological innovations in snowmaking allowed several other resorts to develop through the 1970s, including Appalachian Ski Mountain, Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain, Wolf Ridge, and Ski Sapphire Valley, all of which still operate today. Images of smaller ski areas, such as Hound Ears, Seven Devils, and Mill Ridge, are featured to honor these now defunct clubs. Many of the present-day resorts have incorporated snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice-skating, and snow tubing, along with mountain biking trails for summer recreation on the slopes. North Carolina Ski Resorts showcases the rich recreational history of western and northwestern North Carolina.
