By Mary E. Barkworth, Laurel K. Anderton, Kathleen M. Capels, Sandy Long, Michael B. Piep. 2007
Grasses are the world's most important plants. They are the dominant species over large parts of the earth's land surface,…
a fact that is reflected in the many different words that exist for grasslands, words such as prairie, veldt, palouse, and pampas to mention just a few. As a group, grasses are of major ecological importance, as soil binders and providers of shelter and food for wild animals, both large and small. Some grasses, such as wheat, rice, corn, barley, rye, tef, and sugar cane are major sources of calories for humans and their livestock; others, primarily bamboos, are used for construction, tools, paper, and fabric. More recently, the seed catalogs that tantalize gardeners each winter have borne witness to an increasing appreciation of the aesthetic value of grasses. The Manual of Grasses for North America is designed as a successor to the classic volume by Hitchcock and Chase. It reflects current taxonomic thought and includes keys, illustrations, and distribution maps for the nearly 900 native and 400 introduced species that have been found in North America north of Mexico. In addition, it presents keys and illustrations for several species that are known only in cultivation or are of major agricultural significance, either as progenitors of bread wheat and corn or as a major threat to North American agriculture because of their ability to hybridize with crop species. The Manual is a major reference work for grasses that will retain its value for many years.Island Story
By J. D. Taylor. 2016
What is life like on this island? With a tent and a rusty bike, J.D. Taylor set off to find…
out.No other subject has spilt so much ink as Britain today. But whilst assuming a monopoly on national identity, a London-based elite has proven a poor forecaster of the political weather around the island.Skeptical and inquisitive, Taylor instead cycled all round Britain, interviewing and staying with strangers from all walks of life. Without a map and travelling with the most basic of gear, the journey revels in serendipity and schadenfreude.Island Story weaves histories, experiences and ideas to tell another kind of story: one of rebellion and retail parks, migration and inertia, pessimism and disappearing ways of life, and a fiery, unrealized desire for collective belonging and power.Think you know the island? Island Story will have you think again. From the Trade Paperback edition. The Meaning of Tingo
By Adam Jacot de Boinod. 2005
Did you know that people in Indonesia have a word that means 'to take off your clothes in order to…
dance'? Or how many words the Albanians have for eyebrows and moustaches? Or that the Dutch word for skimming stones is plimpplamppletteren? Drawing on the collective wisdom of over 154 languages, this intriguing book is arranged by theme so you can compare attitudes all over the world to such subjects as food, the human body and the battle of the sexes. Here you can find not only those words for which there is no direct counterpart in English (such as the Japanese age-otori which means looking less attractive after a haircut), but also a frank discussion of exactly how many 'Eskimo' terms there are for snow, and a vast array of information exploring the wonderful and often downright strange world of words. Oh, and tingo means 'to take all the objects one desires from the house of a friend, one at a time, by asking to borrow them'.Disalmanac
By Scott Bateman. 2013
Have you ever wanted to dazzle your friends with your command of history, science, and other important matters? No? Then…
this is the book for you. Ronald Reagan once famously said, Facts are stupid things. ” The book you hold in your hands will prove it. Did you know that Albuquerque’s population is 78% chupacabra and 22% victim? Do you know why civilization started in Mesopotamia, and not Boise? And did you know the reason you shouldn’t stare at the Sun is that it will probably shoot you and turn your skin into a rain poncho? Disalmanac is a handy compendium of false facts covering everything from world history and economics to pop culture, sports, and more. All of which are incorrect, but try not to be so judgy about it. But wait, there’s more. You’ll also discover a generous supply of Random Bonus Facts from the likes of Michael Ian Black, Neil Gaiman, Wil Wheaton, Weird Al Yankovic, and other luminaries who may or may not have a good grasp of the facts. .Rick Steves' Walk: West End, London
