As recently as fifty years ago most people expected to lose their teeth as they aged. Few children benefited from…
braces to straighten their teeth, and cosmetic procedures to change the appearance of smiles were largely unknown. Today, many Canadians enjoy straight, white teeth and far more of them are keeping their teeth for the entirety of their lives. Yet these advances have not reached everyone. The Smile Gap examines the enormous improvements that have taken place over the past century. The use of fluorides, emphasis on toothbrushing, the rise of cosmetic dentistry, and better access to dental care have had a profound effect on the oral health and beauty of Canadians. Yet while the introduction of employer-provided dental insurance in the 1970s has allowed for regular visits to the dentist for many people, a significant number of Canadians still lack access to good oral health care, especially disabled Canadians, those on social assistance, the working poor, the elderly, and new immigrants. At the same time, an attractive smile has become increasingly important in the workplace and in relationships. People with damaged and missing teeth are at a substantial disadvantage, not just because of the pain and suffering caused by poor oral health, but because we live in a society that prizes good teeth and warm smiles. The first history of oral health in Canada, The Smile Gap reveals that despite the gains made, too many Canadians go without any dental care, with damaging consequences for their oral health, general physical health, and self-image. To complete our health care system, it is time to close the gap.Die interdisziplinäre Behandlung des diabetischen Fußes
By Sigurd Kessler. 2022
Handbook of Social Inclusion: Research and Practices in Health and Social Sciences

these changes in order to point out the possible reasons for these changes following COVID-19. It sheds light on the differences between the condition of underdeveloped and developed countries, focusing on how they struggle to find ways of coping. The pandemic has changed the global social order. It has an impact on every aspect of life around the globe, from individual relationships to institutional operations and international collaborations. Societies are endeavoring to protect themselves despite severe restrictions, while the pandemic continues to upset family relations and overturn governance. COVID-19 has made it clearer than ever before that where many strains on the social sector occur, the current global system, with its interconnectedness and vulnerabilities, is under threat. Due to the changing patterns of economic and societal elements caused by COVID-19, further research is urgently needed to analyze these changing trends. The book portrays what work and the global social order will look like in the future. It is essential reading for anyone interested in these changes and the pst-COVID-19 reality.Adolescent Mental Health in The Middle East and North Africa (Global Perspectives on Health Geography)
By Caroline Barakat, Fatme Al Anouti. 2022
This 2-volume set focuses on adolescent health in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA), and presents the latest research on…
the health risk behaviours and social behaviours that adolescents from the MENA region engage in. While there has been a surge in peer-reviewed research publications on population health in the MENA region in the last couple of decades, very few books offer a resource to address the diverse negative influences that disproportionately affect adolescents and children in the MENA region, including increased tobacco consumption culture, low emphasis on physical activity, increased sedentary behaviours, weak health policies, and societal issues related to displacement and political conflicts. These books offer a synthesis of current knowledge on adolescent health issues in the MENA region, and aim to provide evidence-informed adolescent health care practices that address current issues related to mental, physical, reproductive and nutritional health. Volume 1 focuses on mental health in the MENA region, the development and implementation of youth friendly public policies, and how to strategize in the age of COVID-19. The study will aid health care professionals, policy makers, government organizations and health program planners to assess current policies and practices related to adolescent health in the MENA region, and to identify the best courses of action moving forward.Antibacterial Surfaces
By Elena Ivanova, Russell Crawford. 2015
Antibacterial Surfaces covers the advances being made in the design of antibacterial surfaces which have the ability to…
either prevent the initial attachment of bacterial cells or kill any cells that come into contact with these surfaces This book discusses the mechanisms associated with the attachment of bacteria to surfaces and the main strategies currently being employed to control the initial attachment processes These strategies are expanded upon in the subsequent chapters where the definition and description of antibacterial surfaces are clarified as are the mechanisms that come into play when determining the effectiveness of an antibacterial surface Subsequent chapters discuss a number of naturally occurring antibacterial surfaces the methods currently being used for producing synthetic antibacterial surfaces and the current and potential applications of such materials This book will be of great interest to people who work with materials that need to remain free of bacterial films from designing safer biomedical implants to the production of self-cleaning materials where the prevention of biofilm formation has significant economic advantagesCurrent Antipsychotics (Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology #212)
By Gerhard Gross, Mark Geyer. 2011
Six decades after the serendipitous discovery of chlorpromazine as an antipsychotic and four decades after the launch of clozapine …
the first atypical or second generation antipsychotic psychopharmacology has arrived at an important crossroad It is clear that pharmacological research and pharmaceutical development must now focus on complementary or even alternative mechanisms of action to address unmet medical needs i e poorly treated domains of schizophrenia improved acceptance by patients better adherence to medication safety in psychoses in demented patients and avoiding cardiac and metabolic adverse effects The first completely novel mechanisms evolving from our insights into the pathophysiology of psychotic disorders especially the role of glutamatergic mechanisms in schizophrenia are now under development and further principles are on the horizon This situation in many respects similar to that when the initial second-generation antipsychotics became available can be rewarding for all Preclinical and clinical researchers now have the opportunity to confirm their hypotheses and the pharmaceutical industry may be able to develop really novel classes of therapeutics When we were approached by the publishers of the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology to prepare a new volume on antipsychotics our intention was to capture both the accumulated preclinical and clinical knowledge about current antipsychotics as well as prospects for new and potentially more specific antischizophrenia principles These efforts should be based on the pathophysiology of the diseases and the affected neurotransmitter systems Since preclinical research on antipsychotic compounds is only reliable when intimately linked through translational aspects to clinical results we decided to include clinical science as well It turned out that that this endeavor could not be covered by a single volume We thank the editorial board and the publishers for supporting our decision to prepare two volumes Current Antipsychotics and Novel Antischizophrenia Treatments These topics cannot really be separated from one another and should be seen as a composite entity despite the somewhat arbitrary separation of contributions into two volumes The continuing challenges of developing improved and safer antipsychotic medications remain of concern and are discussed in the first volume The new opportunities for the field to develop and license adjunctive treatments for the negative symptoms and cognitive deficits that are treated inadequately by existing compounds have been incentivized recently and provide the focus for the second volume We hope these collective contributions will facilitate the development of improved treatments for the full range of symptomatology seen in the group of schizophrenias and other major psychotic disorders Gerhard Gross Ludwigshafen Germany Mark A Geyer La Jolla CA This volume will try to put current therapy - achievements shortcomings remaining medical needs - and emerging new targets into the context of increasing knowledge regarding the genetic and neurodevelopmental contributions to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia Some of the chapters will also deal with respective experimental and clinical methodology biomarkers and translational aspects of drug development Non-schizophrenia indications will be covered to some extent but not exhaustivelyChallenges and Opportunities in Health Care Management

By Marco Maria Maiocchi, Zhabiz Shafieyoun. 2022
For all of the tremendous advances in medicine and treatment the world has seen in the modern era, the human…
body’s ability to heal itself remains a (literally) vital and often overlooked facet of healthcare. Through the use of emotional design, aimed at transforming healthcare environments, such as waiting rooms, in such a way as to boost the emotional wellbeing of patients, and thus their general attitudes, including in regard to their own healing processes, medical institutions can improve outcomes for the people they treat while simultaneously lowering overall costs. Design, as an inherently transdisciplinary, problem-solving activity, is well-suited to this task. And when combined with a field of study such as neuroscience, which can literally map out the perceptions that lead to the experience of particular emotions, healthcare environments can be transformed into spaces (through such innovations as Kansei engineering) that then subsequently transform the people who rely on them the most, leading to more efficiency and less red ink.Clinical Examination of the Hand: An Evidence-Based Approach
