This book offers an examination of Jeff Noon’s iconoclastic debut novel, Vurt (1993). In this first book-length study of the…
novel, which includes an extended interview with Noon, Wenaus considers how Vurt complicates the process of literary canonization, its constructivist relationship to genre, its violent and oneiric setting of Manchester, its use of the Orphic myth as an archetype for the practice of literary collage and musical remix, and how the structural paradoxes of chaos and fractal geometry inform the novel’s content, form, and theme. Finally, Wenaus makes the case for Vurt’s ongoing relevance in the 21st century, an era increasingly characterized by neuro-totalitarianism, psychopolitics, and digital surveillance. With Vurt, Noon begins his project of rupturing feedback loops of control by breaking narrative habits and embracing the contingent and unpredictable. An inventive, energetic, and heartbreaking novel, Vurt is also an optimistic and heartfelt call for artists to actively create open futures. The Choir Director

New York Times bestselling author Carl Weber takes readers back to church, where preaching isn't always enough, nothing goes better…
with the Word than a song--and it's time for some hard-earned lessons in love, brotherhood, and betrayal. Bishop T. K. Wilson has done all he can to make First Jamaica Ministries a success. But with his last choir director getting caught in a scandal, attendance and cash flow are down. To fill the pews and collection plates, Bishop is counting on a new choir director, the charismatic Aaron Mackie, to revive the church. Aaron has been waiting his entire life to prove he has what it takes to be a big-time choir director. But his ways around women, past and present, could cost him more than his job. Simone Wilcox is smart, sexy--and a highly respected church trustee. She's got her eye on the new choir director, with the intention of having a lot more on him, and no one is getting in her way. First Lady Monique Wilson does and says what she wants, regardless of church politics. Despite her shortcomings and a past rumored to include a long list of men, she'll do just about anything to protect the Bishop. You'd think the Bishop was being tested enough, with choir in-fighting, romantic jealousies, and personal vendettas. But a final piece of the puzzle has yet to be revealed: Someone has been robbing the church blind. Someone whose connection to the Bishop is far too close for comfort. . . . Bastian Bishop. That's his name. He's rough, rugged, and utterly unpredictable. Silent and steady one second, and a nightmare the…
next. He's an outsider and in my world outsiders don't belong. But he doesn't seem to care. After one night of reckless rebellion, the tattooed tyrant keeps coming back, sneaking into my world without permission, and causing trouble I can't allow. I should end it before my father discovers my existence and does it for me. But Bastian says, like it or not ... I am his now, that nothing and no one will stand in his way. What he refuses to understand is I'm a Girl of Greyson, a coveted queen of sorts in the underground crime world. He's a nobody with nothing to his name. We could never be. Or so I thought I did, until betrayal burns so deep that suddenly nothing makes sense. Nothing but him...The Seminar

‘The Seminar’ is a fiction novel narrated by a cynical out of work aspiring actress recalling her mysterious epoch mesmerizing…
journey, all of which happens in one spectacular weekend. Every turn she takes, even outside of the seminar room, becomes more surreal than the last. She meets a physically and financially broken down man who somehow intrigues her. His past seminar experiences help guide her through the conceptual complexities and the jargon of the seminar but unusual powers he displays confound her and unravel with spiraling twists. It is of little wonder why the three hundred and fifty people would attend a free weekend seminar titled ‘50 Passageways To Riches’ in an era of global recessions, depressions, down turned economies, high unemployment, and world hunger. There is a dichotomy though where people still have the dreams and the urges to become successful entrepreneurs when the global mindset has been instilled with such low confidence. ‘The Seminar’ provides far more than just fifty passageways to riches. Mentors, gurus, seminar leaders, provocative and prolific teachers present themselves throughout the entire weekend providing insight that not only she witnesses, but the reader may also get what is commonly found in a seminar experience. That would be what addresses the positive elicited changes in the essence of the psyche, the consciousness, or perhaps self-perception, all of which are capable of transforming even the unemployed layman into a successful entrepreneur. Anyone who has never experienced attending a seminar on any form of personal achievement, which can cost, and be worth, thousands of dollars, can get a good feel of one here. Anyone who has experienced such a seminar will find this one quite unique and very special. The author has been attending seminars since the 1960’s on a wide spectrum of subjects, many of which he covers in the ‘Passageways to Riches,’ while telling a unique mysterious love story within, ‘The Seminar’.
