By Harry G. Lang. 2004
Edmund Booth was born in 1810 and died in 1905, and during the 94 years of his life, he epitomized…
virtually everything that characterized an American legend of that century. In his prime, Booth stood 6 feet, 3 inches tall, weighed in at 210 pounds, and wore a long, full beard. He taught school in Hartford, CT, then followed his wife-to-be Mary Ann Walworth west to Anamosa, Iowa, where in 1840, he built the area's first frame house. He pulled up stakes nine years later to travel the Overland Trail on his way to join the California Gold Rush. After he returned to Iowa in 1854, he became the editor of the Anamosa Eureka, the local newspaper. Edmund Booth fit perfectly the mold of the ingenious pioneer of 19th-century America, except for one unusual difference -- he was deaf. Edmund Booth: Deaf Pioneer follows the amazing career of this American original and his equally amazing wife in fascinating detail. Author Harry G. Lang vividly portrays Booth and his wife by drawing from a remarkable array of original material. A prolific writer, Booth corresponded with his fiancé from the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, and he kept a journal during his days on the California trail, parts of which have been reproduced here. He also wrote an autobiographical essay when he was 75, and his many newspaper articles through the years bore first-hand witness to the history of his times, from the Civil War to the advent of the 20th century. Edmund Booth depicts a larger-than-life man in larger-than-life times, but perhaps its greatest contribution derives from its narrative about pioneer days as seen through Deaf eyes. Booth became a respected senior statesman of the American Deaf community, and blended with his stories of the era's events are anecdotes and issues vital to Deaf people and their families. His story proves again that extraordinary people vary in many ways, but they often possess a common motive in acting to enhance their own communities.Usain Bolt: Inspirational Lives

By Michael Grant. 2000
Saint Paul was not only a religious figure of exceptional power but one of the outstanding makers of history. This…
is the biography of a man who profoundly influenced people of widely divergent beliefs, races and epochs. Without the spiritual earthquake brought about by St Paul, Christianity would probably never have survived. Yet Paul's importance extends very widely beyond the religious field. His effect upon Western thought has been immeasurable. This is the man Michael Grant has described in his book. Paul's own authentic voice can still be heard in his surviving letters or Epistles, which not only contain numerous autobiographical clues, but are the earliest Christian documents in existence and rank high among the most valuable literature the world has ever produced. Dr Grant considers in detail this extant literature, along with material of Paul's four evangelical journeys and discusses the reasons for his spectacular conversion on the road to Damascus. As in The Jews of the Roman World and Herod the Great, he brings together research on Israel on the one hand and Greece and Rome on the other, believing that it is necessary to study these cultures in conjunction, since Paul was a Jew who wrote in Greek and was a Roman citizen. The aim of this book, then, is to bring to life this many sided human being of outstanding and peculiar gifts. You Are What You Wear: What Your Clothes Reveal About You

stories of motorcycling, mateship and frequent, two-wheel-related mayhem. Boris has had a life-long obsession with motorbikes and in this collection of yarns he shares pivotal moments in his riding life, from his first XJ650 Yamaha and the crazy, wild years of learning to ride faster and faster to finding friends with a similar passion who all look like outlaws. In At the Altar of the Road Gods Boris reveals the consequences of high-sides, tank-slappers, angry police and pilgrimages to Bathurst and Phillip Island, and explains how motorbike riding was the rite of passage into manhood he'd been searching for.Be warned: this is a book that may cause laughter, sleeplessness and the desire to buy a Lucifer-black Katana.Praise for MY MOTHER WARNED ME ABOUT BLOKES LIKE ME`It's a sad disconnect that exists in our largely ordered and overregulated society: that those who choose to live a colourful life of lawlessness, decadence, indulgence and abandon often lack the requisite skill to write about how damn fun it is. Mihailovic with his debut memoir, suffers no such problem...Highly recommended.? - 4 x 4 MAGAZINE`There is no requirement to love everything on two wheels to enjoy this book but it would seriously help, as our resident bike nut said about Boris: ?This guy lives and breathes motorbikes. By Susan Mitchell. 2014
The Whitlams' wasn't just a love story - it was a dynamic and enduring partnership that shaped our nation. This is…
the compelling story of former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, his wife Margaret and their 70-year relationship ? personal and political, private and public. It is a story of how two extraordinary people, side by side, led the Australian nation into an exciting and turbulent new era.Gough had no small talk, Margaret had the gift of easy conversation. He was often ill-at-ease in company and preferred his books. She was warm, inclusive and jollied him along. He had a vicious tongue and a quick temper. She always tried to see the best in people. He knew everything about the ideology, history and heroes of the Labor movement. She trusted her instincts. They saw each other as equals and never hesitated to express their different viewpoints. He may have passed the laws that changed the nation, but she made it possible. This is a story of love, respect, struggle, success, failure, disappointment and resilience. It was the strength and endurance of this remarkable relationship that helped change our nation politically, culturally and socially. Neither Gough nor Margaret would have developed into what each became without the influence of the other. Through every major political change, every election campaign, every triumph and every loss, they stood together.MARGARET AND GOUGH takes us inside a partnership where the political was always personal and the personal was always political. My Mother Warned Warned Me About Blokes Like Me
By Boris Mihailovic. 2012
My Mother Warned Me About Blokes Like Me is Boris Mihailovic's frank, fearless and fast account of a life of…
motorcycles, brotherhood, demons, dirt and danger.Whether you're into dirt bikes, road bikes, ride a Yamaha, scooter or Laverda: if you've ever experienced the primal rush of riding a motor bike, the pain of crashing, the suffering of healing and the epiphanies of speed, then this book is for you. My Mother Warned Me About Blokes Like Me is about friendship, treachery, girls in tight pants and motorcycles that have been possessed by Satan. It's about brotherhood, camaraderie, drugs, alcohol and being hounded by the police for daring to combine them all at once. It's about breaking the law, and racing 1000 kilometres through the night for money and thrills. It's about massive amputations, bovine stupidity, maniacal genius and the wisdom of the old. It's about chance and fate and suffering, being two people at once and being handcuffed in a Melbourne gutter. It's about being cold and crazy and hopeful and irredeemably lost. It's about impossible highs and soul-crushing lows, about demons and brothers and dirt and danger, and houses with iron bars instead of glass in their windows.Essentially it's about Boris Mihailovic's life. With motorcycles.'His love of motorcycling, mateship and frequent, subsequent mayhem is matched by a natural writing ability that graphically, often hilariously, brings to life the two-wheeled experiences that have shaped his life...
